I used to have a Carpentry teacher who was a seabee in Vietnam. He showed us some slide pictures of his time there. They had to had the luckiest bull dozer driver ever. They were bulldozing a road through the jungle and uncovered a bunch of our own mines that hadn't been activated thankfully. I think he said that they were called butterfly mines. In the picture you could see them up under the dozer and sticking out from under the tracks of the dozer. He also talked about how people would take dead babies and wrap them up with hand grenades and hand them to soldiers and disappear. The soldiers think that they were just helping the mother and would be killed.

I have an uncle on my dad's side of the family who did 3 tours in Vietnam. He said he kept going back because he'd rather be over there getting shot at from a distance than over here getting spit on. It's amazing to me how many people want peace for everyone, but have no interest in fighting for it.
On my mom's side of the family, my grandfather and his 4 brothers joined the military (2 Army, 2 Navy and 1 Marine) during WW2. All my uncles were military and so was I along with all my male cousins and 2 female cousins. Any time I hear a patriotic song like this, it makes me remember all the people I worked with that never came back from their deployment and those that did only to be medically discharged.

My brother gave more than 20 years to the US Navy and they pushed him out with their mandatory promote-or-retire schtick. When he arrived home in Tennessee, they wouldn't even hire him at PetsMart. Ridiculous that there aren't more reentry supports in place for vets returning to civilian life. But, you are just property of the United States of America when you enlist and when you no longer suit their purposes, when you are obsolete to them, it is bye bye. I don't talk to my brother and haven't in years but that really made me mad to hear how he was treated after giving so much in service to the Navy. :/

This song is expertly written. Big & Rich do not get enough recognition for their talent.
And ... thank you for making the point about some not believing in war. I am one of those, but let me tell you, I absolutely honor veterans. Whenever I see someone with the commemorative plates on their cars or hats on their heads, I extend my hand, look them in the eye, and thank them for their service. Regardless of how I feel about the military or war, I do not and will not ever take the respect from those who had or have boots on the ground. I never ever utter the words, "I don't believe in war" or some such statement to those who fought it ! It would be more accurate for me personally to say that I don't *agree* with war as a concept but in the world we live in, it is a reality and I don't deny it.
My brother, my sister, and my BIL have collectively given more than 65 years to the military, all Navy. My sister was a Senior Master Chief Petty Officer at retirement. My BIL is the same rank. My brother was a master mechanic and flight deck captain and retired a detailer. I would never disrespect the work they did, their dedication, their sacrifices, or their service.

Big & Rich are singers of today. This video brings a tear to my eyes because I remember the Vietnam War. It was on the news every night. Soldiers that came home were not welcomed with open arms they were belittled and and received hate.. The war was not popular and in fact it was never called a war. It was referred to as the Vietnam conflict. A lot of the veterans from Vietnam became homeless people. This was the last War or conflict that used to the lottery draft system so most of these men were not volunteers. But they deserved better from the United States when they came home.

He was shot twice, in the right thigh, and again in the right calf. He bandaged his own wounds. He had orders to stay on the ground. He defied orders and took care of the wounded. The battle lasted over 24 hours but, he went all over the field looking for more medical supplies as his were exhausted right away. He recieved a Silver Star. On March 9 ,1967 President Johnson presented SPEC-6 Lawrence Joel, "The Medal Of Honor" on the White House Lawn! The city of his birth and Hometown, Winston-Salem N.C. has a Coliseum named after Him. It's more upbeat because it's not about 40 plus Americans losing their lives in Vietnam. It's about well, riding cowboys instead of horses. That's always upbeat. I have my very own cowboy. I recommend it.

I was 6 yrs. Old outside playing basketball by myself and walked in the back door of my home. There everybody was in family screaming and crying . my moms brother Uncle Larry McCubbins Killed In Action Vietnam. 19 F-----G yrs. Old.Grandma (her son) was laying on floor shaking violently, hallucinating. Grandpa(his son) was in corner staring at nothing, with drool coming down his chin. I was 6 yrs. Old. Heres to all Vietnam HEROES . Bless you . I pray to the Higher Spirit all the time. These people who disrespect our country without sacrifice need not cross me. You have had my medicine before. Do not EVER talk down my country. I'll put somethin' on ya' Ajax won't take off. I am not a veteran. Biggest regret of my life.Thank you for letting me vent.God Bless America.......

I'd forgotten how powerful this song is. War IS Hell. There are several artists/bands who do a lot for veterans and military, especially 5FDP and KISS. I do feel we need to take better care of our vets. My great uncle was one of those kids who went to Vietnam and came back haunted... he never talked about the war, and was sick a jokester. He literally had me laughing at my grandmother's visitation(his big sister). I asked him them, how was it that no matter how bad things were he could always make us laugh. He put his arm around me and said "If I learned one thing in those jungles all those years ago, it was that sometimes you have to laugh to keep from screaming cause if you start screaming you will never stop". Truly one of the most profound things anyone has ever said to me, that was 14 years ago and I kinda make it my mantra. Sorry for the ramble.

Bob Dylan, first is a poet, he set his poems to music, An unusual voice to say the least but he is never off key ever. Almost every singer out there has a Dylan song in their book, From, Knock, knock, knocken on Heavens Door, to Blowing in the Wind a song that put down racism." Positively 4th Street" is my favorite out of literally hundreds of songs. He was called , The Voice of his generation , which he declined. By the way, the longer you listen to his music, the better his voice becomes, no joke. Jimi Hendricks version of Knock, Knock, Knocken on Heaven's Door, Dylan said he liked it better than his own, Serious Chops! "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man" is rated High on Rolling Stone's best ever Rock and Roll songs. His ,"Like a Rolling Stone" was ranked #1.

I'll never forget the day my 18yr old uncle and 18 yr old cousin was drafted and left for Vietnam. We had just lost a cousin over there. I was very young but, I remember it like it was yesterday. They were not given a hero's welcome for the ones that returned. Luckily, we live in a small town and the bus took each soldier home. I'll never forget running and jumping into my uncle's arms. So thankful he came home alive but, till this day, he has problems from it. He also suffers from Agent Orange exposure.

Something to believe in, by Poison is an incredible song that also pays respect to vietnam vets. The lead singer, Brett Michaels, wrote it the night his best friend and bodyguard commited suicide in Palm Springs... the studio cut from the official video is pure, raw emotion as it was recorded the next morning. It took a LOT of takes because he kept breaking down in tears... the video is drop dead gorgeous too. The emotion on his face... gives me chills, you can FEEL what he felt.... and he's no actor, that's all raw emotion.

I love this song and I'm so grateful for our troops..my father was in the military and he was shot (I wanna say desert storm but not 100 percent sure )and still has the scars he doesn't talk about it much....fast forward to last year ..I care for adults with various degrees of disabilities and one of my main individuals ended up in the hospital and there family member came in and was so sweet ..we got to talking and it gives me chills to this day but this man whom I never met before in a state i just moved to ...turns out my dad fought under his command and side by side with him....crazy to think they both went into battle not knowing 20+ years down the road it would come full circle 😍

There are organizations that pair songwriters and veterans are paired up, and the veteran tells their story and then the songwriter will come up with a song about their story. These songs are then put out there for artists to listen to and can record. The veteran will also receive royalties for the song. I have a friend who actually did this-she and her three brothers all served. One brother was killed in action in Iraq, and her youngest brother took his own life several years later- because of PTSD. The song was never picked up by an artist, but it is a beautiful song.
