    What a great review. Captain Ron and Jules were gracious hosts and he was my vision of a genuine sailor. All I can say he was a good guy and actually this is one of the best boat walkthroughs I've seen on the net. I wish them the very best in their future adventures and it would be fantastic if I could sail with them one day. Thanks to you for asking pertinent questions and allowing the room for Capt Ron to entertain us with his down to earth yet a quality review of his beautiful boat. I also picked up his concern for safety and that was impressive, so was his deck management of all the lines and functions. I had no idea before this piece regarding sailing implements, but now I have a basic knowledge.

    I am so happy that someone has at last done a personal overview I've the Irwin 52,i don't own one (Yet) and also not done any sailing yet, I am starting next year, with my RYA studies, I have totally fallen in luv with this patiqular boat, especially the 3rd Gen 1988 to 90 model also the 54ft a good strong fast enough boat

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety +1

      Amel Super Maramu's are also a good choice, but I must say that the Irwin 52 and 54 are Sweet Sailing Vessels. Fair Winds!

    How would you rate a staysail schooner in comparison to a ketch, for a smallish crew (4 to 6)? I'd like to commission one, but having a square foresail on carbon-fiber yardarms for tradewinds sailing to avoid a spinnaker or whisker poles. Sort of like an abbreviated, two-masted staysail barqentine, 70 to 90 feet.

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      I don't think I could answer that question. Although, look at the downwind sails on the Super Maramu 2000. The ballooner and the Genoa furl together so you can adjust the size of your downwind sail from the cockpit. It works well if you are going dead down, or 30 degrees off. With this set up you can sail with a very small crew. We sail a 53 Super Maramu, with two crew; me and my wife. Fair winds!

    Awesome video as usual. If they had it to do all over again would they buy a cat?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      Captain Louis owned a few Cat's, a Tri, and several Ketch's (monos). He told me that he does like the space on a Cat, but he also likes the motion of a monohull in bigger seas. But he will be in Fiji soon, I'll have to ask him...Thanks Timothy!

    I put gel batteries on my boat. My Yanmar alternator put out a charge at 14.1 volts.. the gel batteries can't accept more than 13.4.. it ruined them.. back to a wet cell

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      Freya runs their Genset 2 to 4 hours a day, so they might not have a separate alternator on the engine for the the house batteries. This was the battery charger can be set to the proper voltage. We have AGM's, and I do have a alternator on my main engine, and it is set to 28.4V (we have two batteries in series) And I have not had a problem.

      I'll try to get something from them, but what you do is take the most difficult arrival paperwork .... Maybe New Zealand.... And keep a copy completely filled out.. Or, put it in a spreadsheet.....

    Fact: The Captain Ron character was based on Captain Louis. I love that guy and his beautiful wife Joules. Bring on the yellow canary!

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      I would like to think so, but Captain Ron the movie was released in 1992, and sometimes the math just doesn't add up to our desired reality! But, now we know that Captain Ron exists in real life, and is still out there sailing the South Pacific. Both Z and I love Jules and Captain Louis!!

  • @Eddybarrett84
    @Eddybarrett84 Před 5 lety +1

    May I ask what a similar boat w/ same length and make cost? Also in the South Pacific what would you guess is the average age of cruisers? 45-65y/o ? What age do you come in contact with the most? 50’s? 60’?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      Between $150K (in bad shape) to $350K (very good shape) Go on Yachtworld.com and you will see all the boats for sail around the world. The average age is probably somewhere between 57 or 62. Most sailers are between 45 and 75.

    Hello, loved your interview and what wonderful people they are. Me and my partner are looking to crew and learn more we are both qualified to day skipper level. We are both very hardworking and have a passion for learning and living the life. I couldn’t find the link that you put up to contact Louis and Joules but if you can put us in touch that would be amazing. I think we would be great crew for them. Thanks again for the great video.

      With some stiff wind they will move pretty well, but in light winds you are correct.

      @@SailingAquarius I watched a video of a cat sailing out of New Zealand and on that particular day the seas were rough and the wind blowing hard. Generally speaking, is there prevailing winds most of the time around Australia or is that kind of weather seasonal? If what you say about the speed of this boat, then maybe it is better suited for the weather conditions in the general area of his home base. However, he is a world traveler so I guess it depends where he is on any given sail? I think what I'm trying to say is maybe his boat's characteristics fit better with his sailing plans? I just wanted to add I don't know squat about sailing.

    I'm sure you're aware, but that audio issue with is caused by too harsh noise removal settings, or doing it too many times. I get this sometimes when I do this. If you're going to do interviews, you might want to think about getting a lapel mic, to mic your subjects. (wireless)

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      Why do you have to be sooo right every time??! I was having problems with the sound with this video, and I thought it was because my Video Mic Pro was low on batteries.... Or something else, I have no Idea. Anyway I was not happy with the sound, but had to get rid of all the background noise. Live and learn! Thanks for the comment, and next time I will have to do a sound check before the interview.

    • @NeonsStyleHD
      @NeonsStyleHD Před 5 lety

      @@SailingAquarius LOL. Yeh background noise can be a pain; I record a good 15 secs of it and only remove it twice. Fortunately here it isn't so bad, I doubt most people will notice it. :)

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  Před 5 lety

      I will change up my interviews in the future. It sucked when I was listening to the quality of the sound from the gear I was using! I used anA6500 with a Video mic Pro... Thought I was going to get something I could work with... But in this case not! Thanks for the advice!!
