    Good discussion on the Morgan Out Island 41, but you completely missed the key feature that Charlie Morgan strongly emphasized in the majority of his designs - SHOAL DRAFT!
    On the west coast of Florida and in the Bahamas (where most Morgan's live), shoal draft is seen as far more than a simple design feature - it is a safety feature.
    The great majority of Charlie Morgan's racer-cruisers were shoal draft keel centerboard designs, and all of his Out Island cruising boats featured shoal draft keels.
    The original Morgan Out Island 41 - as big, heavy, and roomy as it is - only draws 4'-2". Few new boats of this size today can be found with such a shoal draft - even fewer without an otherwise complicating centerboard or swing keel.
    Also, while people (mostly non-owners) often disparaged the boat's lack of performance upwind, Charlie Morgan fully understood how most cruisers actually use their boats. He noticed that no matter the boat's windward capabilities, most cruising sailors will motor upwind and only "bother" with sailing when off the wind. So, understanding that reality, the Morgan Out Island 41's "windward sailing performance" really isn't an issue for most cruising sailors. And, off the wind, the boat actually moves surprisingly well if one bothers to trim the sails properly, and otherwise manages to keep the bottom clean.

      @johnffmitchell Před 3 lety

      In the late 70’s, Morgan Yachts came out with a very popular 38, aft cockpit sloop. They offered a shoal draft version for the east coast or a deep keel for the west.

    • @TomScottMorgan30
      @TomScottMorgan30 Před 3 lety

      @@johnffmitchell They did. However, that boat was designed by Ted Brewer, not Charlie Morgan. Charlie designed the first 38' model in the late 60's - a keel centerboarder that only drew 3'-9" with the board up. 😊

    • @johnffmitchell
      @johnffmitchell Před 3 lety

      After Catalina bought Morgan Yachts from Beatrice, I heard that they attempted to redesign the 41’s keel to relieve that upwind problem. I do not know if that project came to completion.

    • @TomScottMorgan30
      @TomScottMorgan30 Před 3 lety

      They did modify the underbody, but it was more of an effort to modernize (market) the boat and perhaps improve manueverabilty under power in marina settings. The long keel was replaced with a longish fin and seperate rudder with skeg. This mod could have dramatically improved the windward performance had they made it substantially deeper - but keeping in mind that "shoal draft" was always a major factor in the boats desirability, they had to keep it shoal - certainly under 5'. So, they ended up with a 4'-10" draft with the new keel. That is still not too bad for a 41' boat, but it was simply not enough to make the boat a dramatically better performer upwind. (...When cruising, their owners still end up motoring upwind if time matters.) And, that 8" penalty in draft made the newer boats less desirable than the older ones for some sailors frequenting areas where every inch counts.

    I have agree with you on some of the features of the Morgan. I once went to see a 38 ft and I was amazed of how much space was inside. And the engine could be accessed easily from all sides and even the transmission from the aft berth, a full size, being center cockpit. I walked away, after making an offer, because she hadn't been on the hard in over 8 years, this old man living in it with his son. Each on their own cabin. I thought the boat was overkill for me as well. It was a sloop, but huge. I'm glad I walked. Co-captains are hard to come by unless she already owns a boat. Best of luck.

    Our first sailboat was a Sunfish. The second in 1980 was a 1974 Morgan OI 41 ketch. We owned it 29 years sailing in Florida and The Bahamas. Easily sailed, very stiff, confortable, rugged and as fast as any similar cruising boat. Not 24,000 lbs; loaded for three months cruising it weighed 32,500 ! They're all very old now as am I.

Slow as a snail until the wind piped up over 15 knots, but I knew we could go anywhere on it. Sold it for what I paid after 5 years. I would buy another on. One other thing about Morgans though, the interior is mostly plywood and veneer. Not much teak at all.

    14 years ago I came very very close to buying a Morgan 41 out Island sailboat to this day I am still looking at them and this is a great consideration for anybody. Right now I am getting ready to sell my home and Yucca Valley California and I'm going to move to Florida the Nature's Coast Crystal River or Homosassa Springs and I have to say the out Islander 41 is on my list for sailing the Caribbean or Beyond and I actually do regret buying that vessel yes they're not beautiful but they are very very accommodating the AFT cabin is perfect the engine room is unbelievable and well I have to say maybe someday I will get one sooner than later of course since I'm moving to Florida.

    Another perfect example of the effect that having a following has on a boat's price. Our Hughes 40 is about as similar to the Out Island 41 as you can get (and even more so to the Out Island 415 from a few years later), but we got her for less than half of that average OI 41 price. We don't have a workbench, though, unless you count the flat surface on top of the battery compartment.

    Hello.
    Charlie hunts wife Shirley is still alive. I happen to be married to her for the last 27 years. As Charlie died of cancer the year before.
    You can speak with Shirley if you choose. She is 87 years old now. But I can put her on the phone for you.
    Reply if you want to speak with her
