- The Batfamily takes center stage in WB Montreal's Gotham Knights. Releasing on Oct. 21, Gotham Knights follows Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, and Batgirl as they fight to restore order in Gotham in the wake of Batman's death. Adam Sessler is here with overview, Xplay producer Joe interviews two of the game's developers, and finally Joe and Danny Pena discuss their thoughts on the game after going hands-on with it for a couple hours.
Batman is dead. A new expansive, criminal underworld has swept the streets of Gotham City. It is now up to the Batman Family; Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin; to protect Gotham, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. From solving mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city’s history to defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations, you must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save the streets from descent into chaos.
Gotham Knights is an open-world, action RPG set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet. In either solo-play or with one other hero, patrol Gotham’s five distinct boroughs and drop in on criminal activity wherever you find it.

Yeah. Kevin left because he was happy with the state of AOTS and he seems to want to come back from time to time. Adam is needed for x-play still. And I think Adam enjoys doing these reviews.

Jesus christ its like talking to emotional kids who think the world revolves around their grievances. The company was already sinking. They shot themselves in the foot by not only having a youtube channel, but bringing the channel back to broadcast television, a medium that is dying. They came back during a time where there are way better alternatives for video game commentary. Video game journalism is a dime a dozen on youtube now which is why they died several years ago too. They can't compete by resting on their laurels from a time when they were really the only source for watching video game related content. Even the TV channel has been airing re-runs of Ninja Warrior since its revival to fill up programming slots. They do not have the budget to stay above water.
The one question I wish XPlay had asked the level developers is how they settled in the scope of the game in terms of map size and density. Adding verticality brings in its own set of challenges, such as investing time and resources into it instead of something else but going miles and miles in multiple directions also takes a lot in terms of team capacity, so how did they decide, okay "this" is enough.
I'd say that, given the responses to questions regarding Gotham's representation in the game, one could intuit when the developers felt they had done enough. I imagine that once the individual boroughs and their unique designs as influenced by the founding families were all expressed and incorporated into the multi-tiered map design, the developers felt they had reached a good point.

Nooo Adam! Its not a bad thing that there are no co-op puzzles! I don't want things locked behind co-op. The only way it'll work is if co-op puzzles don't affect story or your ability to obtain certain items. I hate when games force me to play co-op to get the full experience. Imo. Great stuff though
Yeah but no team up style attacks of environmental effects is weird. Like X Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance and got it right al most 20 years ago

Exactly. AC Unity had items locked behind a co-op stuff. I find myself not liking having to talk to strangers about teaming up.

I'm still kind of one the fence on this one. I played all the Arkham games and loved the combat gameplay, but something about the animations in this one seems kinda clunky? I'm looking at the fighting in this vid and it seems *really* slow. Maybe I'm missing something?
I agree. It just doesn't seem to flow like the old Arkham games.

I’ve been watching old episodes of X-Play and it’s nuts that games would get 3-4 minute reviews. They were really dancing on a razor’s edge back then.

The single best decision about this game is that I wont have to grind each character. The progression carries over which means more time spent actually enjoying the game.

Nightwing is my most favourite superhero and the sole reason I've pre-ordered this game and will be playing on Day 1.
He inspires me to try to live in the moment and I was even inspired to skydive after reading Peter Tomasi's run in Nightwing issue no. 142.
Joe being a fan of Nightwing has instantaneously become my favourite dude in the channel.

Glad to hear the game is much more then beatem up and lots of investigation and finding secrets and exploration.
This video may actually sell me on this game. Big fan of the whole Arkhamverse so I was real hesitant about this one. But it looks really good right now. I will buy this one for sure. Love single player games and it’s cool to bring in a partner in this experience.

@@Hack_The_Planet_ it looks slower and clunky but if it’s anything like Arkham Origins in terms of story it can’t be that bad. But I won’t buy it until the reviews start pouring. 7 seems fair so far but who knows( don’t count igns score)

A lot of people complain the combat is too simple. But the Arkham trilogy had simple combat too and it was a blast

I feel like G4/Xplay should exist in the Resident Evil universe. I’m wonder how and why Adam is back with a brand that burned him once before, and has miraculously burned him a second time. It’s like how I wondered why Chris Redfield works for umbrella, and the BSAA are now bad.
I’m excited to play this one. We get close to it, Bayo3, Star Ocean Divine Force, and Mario Sparks of Hope. Broktober is loaded!

Making a game with four characters only 2 player co op is a mind boggling choice to me. When I first heard about this game I was excited about the idea of playing with several friends and was then sorely disappointed.
But the game would be too easy with 4 players
I hope you don’t mean it that would be bad because it would be too easy and it would be crazy to add more enemies just because you added players

Fantastic preview. I'm still on the fence about GK, even though I loved all the previous Arkham games. It's wild to think this game probably started development after Arkham Knight in 2016, 2017? Give it four years + one more for COVID, and now it's finally coming out. I'm glad the devs tried to add unique things to the Knights to make them and the game different from the previous games while also retaining the core DNA that made people love the Arkham games in the first place. I'm still waiting on final reviews, but this gives me a cautiously optimistic outlook than before.
If it was 4 player the enemies would literally just get nuked. There would be no back and forth or combat. The enemies would all just die, because everyone would just activate their specials at the same time.
I want to know if those Dark Knight challenges are in this game.
I didn't care for abilities being tied to them. By the time you unlock all of them the game it's not far from finishing.
Second of all I don't look forward to Brutes with shields.
I'm just waiting for that Wonder Woman game. I'm so excited.

15:24 I thought they said you could do co op with the same character because with the builds no 2 players will be the same.
You can play as the same character. The Red Hood combat trailer (or whatever it's called) showed two people playing Red Hood in co-op.
I'll say it's fine if people like playing single player; but why give the opinion that it's better without multiplayer/ 4 player if you always still have the option to play single player? I have friends, we like to coop, let us deal with or decide if there is too much going on at once.
I hope, in the future of the game, they add maybe something like a legends mode or raid that incorporates 4 players
Glad you know 4 players straight up is bad because they would have to do a lot of things for the 4 players
@@johnydomestudios I have a few typing errors but I meant that the game should be 4 players with single player option. By do a lot of things you must mean optimization (their job/ quality assurance) because this game is poorly optimized. I don't think 4 players is straight up bad but you should have the choice to be anti social if you choose and let friends have their gameplay. Avengers was bad not because it was 4 players but because the devs were unable to fix bugs in an outdated engine that wasn't designed for multiplayer and lack of content. The RIGHT developer with the proper TIME and FUNDING can make any game good regardless of number of players or genre.

if the way is being paved for a JL or superman game ...Definitely step forward if not nah...DC keeps playing it safe ...this is the 5th batman based game ..only so many times you can travel around Gotham and fight thugs....DC needs to take notes from Marvel and not just oversaturate one character focus on other popular characters that aren't based in Gotham
The last time the series innovated, people complained about the batmobile. I loved it though.
I agree thought the batmobile gameplay was great was disappointed with the deathstroke boss battle though
