      I remember this season vividly coming home to catch late night Lakers highlights here in Canada that season (they fell so badly from the spotlight their games werent televised on national TV) For much of the few months of that season watching home game Laker highlights.....there were tons of empty seats in the stands
      By the end of the regular season games were sold out and the energy was back in LA. Cedric was the all star. Eddie was all rookie. But it was Nick that put them back on the map. He brought the winning swagger back in LA.

      This was probably the pinnacle of his career as a player. He'd never reach these heights again as a player although he'd have many more productive seasons.
      In 94-95 (and even this video!) though he was taking.....and making some ridiculous shots. He wasn't anywhere near to being even one of the top 30 (or possibly 50?) players in the NBA that season......but to me he was THE most exciting player in the entire league to watch that year.

      I think this season he (and the entire LA team in 94-95) was playing way over his his head. They flew in under the radar that season....they werent even expected to make the playoffs so as a squad they were playing loose with no expectations. Nick was the embodiment of that.
      A LOT of these clutch shots he made this season (like the game winners vs Boston and San Antonio) were simply ridiculous and unsustainable over the long term.

    • @Riles3152
      @Riles3152 Před 4 lety +1

      Nick Van Exel was one of the most talented point guards of his era. It’s really kind of unfortunate how under appreciated his career has been. I believe Van Exel’s ideal role was pretty much the one he had In Dallas. A sharp shooting scorer and big time clutch shot maker off the bench. People forget how dynamic he was in the 6th man role he played in for those early 2000’s Dallas Maverick teams. He was basically Lou Willams before Lou Willams in terms of how good a scorer he was even in a “reserve” role.

      Yes, this was a fun, and hard working team that made the Lakers relevant again. But, that's the key word. This team was in no one going to win a championship, but this allowed Lakers to lure top free agents. This is how championship teams were built. They got Shaq, and draft Kobe two years later and the rest was history.

    VANEXCEL was most exciting pg and Anklebreaker to watch with his kind of flare and was better skilled then
    Gary Payton. GP was carried through Shawn Kemp .who he threw Lobs to all day and got most of his assist to .only advantages Gary Payton had were a coach that believed in him (shawn kemp )nate McMillan mentoring him which helped develop his IQ and height to guard taller point guards and shorter 2guards but all the fast PGs used to bust his ass .GP was a little overrated

      @@taymillions4754 true. Personally I think Nate McMillan was just as problematic for teams defensively as Payton was.
      But I think Kidd was a better defensive PG for longer than GP. Van Exel drove Payton crazy this entire season including the playoffs where he outplayed him.
      Also Payton absolutely got shredded by Billups in the 04 Finals. I know he was past his prime, but I remember past prime Kidd holding his own in stretches vs the taller, stronger, younger and more athletic Lebron in the '11 Finale
