    • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před 3 lety +1

      You're welcome. Good questions. It's best to use the same clay you are working with, because some clays don't get along or fire at different temperatures. You don't want to apply low fire slip to high fire clay. If you want to have a batch ready and use with different types of clay it's best to use high clay. 😍 I think a smooth slip would be better. I have never made slip with grog.

    • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před 3 lety

      Very good question Debra. 😊 Both ways will work. After I make a cup of slip then I know how much mason stain to add. I can then double or triple the recipe and the color will be the same. You can add mason stain to the water first and if the color is too light you can always add more mason stain.

    Just recently found your videos and have been enjoying them. On the one making colored slip, is there a reason you couldn’t start with liquid slip just from throwing clay? I save slip out of my wheel pan after throwing and then I use an immersion blender to get it well blended and smooth. Is there a reason why I couldn’t use this and add the powdered mason stain to that and mix it in rather than drying the clay and making it into tiny a particles and then adding Mason stain? Could I measure the uncolored slip as you did and then just measure the mason stain into it?

    • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před rokem

      Thank you, Lee. Good question. Yes, there are different ways to do it. I found this way to work best for me. I like to get the clay nice and smooth first. If there are any clumps or debris, I like to rid of those before adding the color. Some potters add water to the mason stains first, then add it to the slip. If I don't use all the liquid mason stain in that batch, I have to store it in another container until I make more. 😊

    I have both ^5-6 porcelain and laguna B-mix bone dry "scrap," which I would like to use for decorating slip(s). When "reformulating" these as a slip for decorating (either textured or painting) do they need to be matched to the same clay? Or as long as they are the same firing range (^5-6), can they be used on either the porcelain or the B-mix? (I'm experimenting with greenware.) What problems might I run into? I saw the comment regarding deflocculant, but wonder if I want to adjust the viscosity to allow for painting or dipping the greenware, if that would be the best approach for thinning to minimize the water content to better manage fitting the slip to the clay? TIA!

    • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před rokem +1

      Hi Bob. Just making sure if it's the porcelain Five, you can not use it as a slip because it is touchy and will start to melt over cone 5. You can use a different clay body for a slip but it is best to use the same slip on your clay because the clay and slip will expand and contract together, and they will marry well in the kiln. I don't use a deflocculate in my decorating slip. It is used more with slip-casting molds. Here is a post with a video that may also help with slip questions. • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před rokem +1

      Very good question. I add around a cup of water. If the slip is too thick, it's easier to add a little more water. If I added too much water, I will crumble up some more clay and add a little. It is hard to get the exact amount of water because the clay bits can be broken up a little smaller or larger, affecting the amount of water you need to get the right consistency that you want your Slip to be. 😊

      That is an excellent question. You will need to keep track of the amount you use because the amount of water will be determined by how thick you want your slip to be. Some potters like it a little thicker then others depending on the decorating technique. I just got mason stains. Mazerine blue, Bermuda green, pansy purple, blackberry wine, prysad yellow and black. Any suggestions on the quantity needed for making colored slip? You needed 2 tbsp of blue but 1 of the green. Is there a rule of thumb for colors. IE darker stains need more (or less) then lighter colors.
    Also, what size of mesh was your strainer? Nothing fancy? Can I just get from the dollar or second hand store? Thanks!

    • @PotteryCrafters
      @PotteryCrafters  Před 3 lety +1

      WOW!!! That is great!😍 With the mason stains, You don't need to add as much stain to the darker colors and the lighter colors need more. The amount you add depends on how dark you want your colors. Keep in mind they do fire darker. That's why I measure it out so I know how many teaspoons or tablespoons created that color in 2 cups of clay.
      The strainer I use is a kitchen aid with a small mesh. You can use any strainer. The size of the mesh depends on how smooth you want your slip to be.
      The amount you make depends on how much and often you use your slip. I would make a batch of at least 2 cups and store them in a plastic freezer bag. it lasts the longest that way and stops the mold from growing. Enjoy your stains 😃
