- I gave water to this cutest little koala on a hot day and he gives a cuddle in return.
This koala is wild and very young. Young koalas can be curious and have no fear of humans. He was in our gum tree for two days over a very hot heatwave. I kept an eye on him and a bowl of water out. What a lovely little creature.

The lady who films them has said (in another video) that her area wasn’t affected, although areas nearby were. So we can presume, at least so far, that the koalas in her neighbourhood are still safe.

Although cute, koalas aren't smart creatures. This is by design, as they have smooth brains, and it's all the wrinkles that help with thinking. They also primarily eucalyptus, which is a plant that has evolved to not want to be eaten. Not particularly smart. One good thing about not being able to think that much is that they don't give a fuck. It'll rain and koalas will barely notice because they simply do not have the mental capacity to give a fuck.

I think its more that Eucalyptus are the dominant tress in the forests of Australia so an animal was bound to have attempted to make a niche for itself by eating it. Australia is a harsh environment so animals like the koala only survived by developing their unique diet so they don't have to compete for food from other species as competition is tough when resources are scarce. So while it isn't an intelligent animal the idea of evolving to be able to survive on a food source that almost nothing else can eat isn't actually a dumb move as it's a way of ensuring that the species will live on, but the side effect is that intelligence takes a back seat.

Koala can't eat any other leaf. they can only digest Eucalyptus trees which I find really fascinating because they're poisonous. That's also why they sleep a lot because Eucalyptus doesn't have much energy. and this is irrelevant but they're also marcupiuls(?) and really cute. don't ask how I know this because I am American and only 13 so xD
