Firewood Processor Walk Around and Initial Thoughts DYNA SC-15

  • My friend Kevin and I rented a DYNA SC-15 firewood processor. We ran it for a couple hours the first evening and then I shot this walk-around and initial thoughts the next morning.
    If there's a way to "overdo" firewood cutting, it's with a processor. Now this Dyna SC-15 has some flaws, the largest being the super weak splitting cylinder preventing us from using the 6-way wedge. Would I rent a processor again? Yes. Would I rent this particular processor again? Probably not. I now have to split some of these chunks again just to get them to the size I want. Next time I'll be looking for a machine with more power.
    Stay tuned for videos of the machine running.
    Thanks for watching.

    I sold 100's of Dyna's over 8 years and know the machines very well. We also have a small firewood business selling 200 cords per year. We've recently switched over to Hakki Pilke's from Finland. It's an absolutely superior machine. And yes of course I understand I'm biased. On the topic of wedges alone, we had the exact same problems for years. I'd like to offer that it's the "6-way wedge" itself. The Dyna design (on their entire machine) is that bigger is better. There is a reason they don't offer an 8-way or a 12-way, as most manufacturers do. The steel wedges are way to thick and the staggering & offset is wrong. Literally to much steel "blocking" the log from passing by the blades. They weigh a ton just picking them up and it's wasted steel. With Hakki Pilke we call the wedges "blades". They are beautifully designed & rely on much thinner still that flexes with each split. I don't think Dyna's are over powered - just the opposite. A comparable Hakki Pilke relies on just 30hp vs. the larger diesel & has twice the production rating. - Again I must say that I parted ways with Dyna on good terms and as friends. It was simply a matter of using & selling a premium grade firewood processor.

      Thank you so much for the feedback. What you are saying makes sense, and yes, those wedges are VERY heavy. It is a lot of material for the wood to move around.
      They do have 8 way wedges, but I don’t know about the 12 way.

      The Hakki seems good value Id come to the same conclusion just watching yt videos , some of there gaurds seem a bit thin but well thought out design and speed , unless you want to spend cord king $$ Id think its a good option , I heard someone say Cord King where a bit aweful but hard to believe
      Anyone know why someone might say that ?, I known US machines tend to be ruggard powerful monsters with burt force and not alot else .

    There is something up with that machine. I’ve got my sc14. I’ve never had the 4 way in it. Only 6 way. Haven’t found a log it won’t split yet. All oak, ash, beech, cherry, etc

      Glad to hear that. I couldn’t imagine they would build such a nice machine and overlook such an important part of it. Maybe they have the pressure turned down because it’s a rental?.

      thats possible. You should be able to run an 8 way on the sc15 and 16

      hunter vanderkooi I wish we could have. Now I have to manually split quite a bit of it. It was still worth renting as we did process a lot of trees in a short amount of time. It just isn’t as small as I’d like.

      I sell quite a bit of wood a year. When i used to rent one i figured i could do enough wood in the first hour to pay for the rental.

    • @JaredsShop
      @JaredsShop  Před 6 lety

      hunter vanderkooi I can see that. I have more than enough wood to sell to pay for the rental. I may sell some but for now the plan is just to use it for camping.
      Thanks for the feedback. It’s good to know there was something wrong with the machine. I’ll go speak with the rental place again.

    For all of you people that think that just because a wood splitter or processer has a high horse power engine that's on the specific machine you have that it should split whatever well your wrong it's the size of the hydraulic pump and how many gallons of fluid it pushes through at a certain speed so do more research on your equipment so that you understand the equipment better

    • @JaredsShop
      @JaredsShop  Před 6 lety

      Agreed. It’s the pressure of the hydraulic fluid and the size of the bore that determines the force. The amount of fluid only relates to the speed though.
      This processor had an unusually small splitting cylinder. It was MUCH smaller than what comes on any standalone splitter I’ve seen. Unfortunately, we didn’t know what to expect until we picked it up and used it. We didn’t expect it to have such a hard time splitting. This rental place has several locations and it isn’t stored at my local location. It was brought in that day for us so we didn’t have the opportunity to view it before.
      If this one remains the only rental within a reasonable distance I would probably rent it again. I still processed a lot of wood in a short amount of time. If I can find a different model to rent next time, I will.

      Talking to the guy who does more research on anything and everything he purchases or rents or is just curious about. Vast knowledge he requires before committing. Seen it first hand and it always pays off. #worthoverdoing

      We didn't think so. I had over 130 logs stacked, ready to go. Most of them were about 20' long. We made it through all 130 logs in under 8 hours on the hour meter.

      Did you check with the Dyna dealer? I rented this from an equipment rental place that rents stuff from tents to dozers. They have 3 or 4 locations and share this between the locations. I’d check with some local rental places.
      That’s up to you but that seems like quite a bit. Is that for 16 hours on the meter? How many trees do you have staged? It’s a lot easier if you have 1 guy loading and another running the machine, otherwise you won’t be real efficient. We would shut it down every time we had something wedge or had to mess with it so we could save the hours. We busted butt at 2 locations and still only used a little over 15 hours. You better have a TON of trees ready for that thing.
