I think it’s in them from the start… if someone chooses to purposely do that to someone I don’t believe they ever had value for human life and are capable of doing it again
I’d argue that there are more reformed murderers than rapists.
@@KPbouj It makes sense because killers more often than not have a specific motive, they'll kill someone in particular for a personal reason (unless they're serial killers), whereas rapists only do it for self gratification. They will do it again if given the chance because they don't need a specific set of circumstances or a particular victim in mind, they act on their impulses.

I guess motive matters. What was his motive for strangling the prostitute ? I understand he was on coke but not everyone who does drugs kills people. Not to victim blame but it wasn’t a good idea to start a relationship with this man. She was a smart woman who could have done better. May be there is a dark side to the true crime community. May be some people get so involved in some of these cases, they start to glamorize the people involved in their heads.

I've never felt more anxious listening to one of these true crime episodes... I was expecting him to literally attack Marie any second the entire time. She has BALLS.
He probably liked her. She is pretty. Also he trusted her and respected. So he couldn't just rape her. She knew that until she sleeps with him, she had power over him. Also she started slightly teasing him and trapped him eventually. Just a very smart woman

the craziest thing about this is he only served 8 years for previously murdering another woman.
I worked with the police to convict my ex-husband, and it was terrifying. He had inappropriate child images and I suspected him of hurting our kids, which has been confirmed but not convicted. I was the one who reported him and gathered evidence for them. He had guns, and made a bunch of comments like, "I'm not going to prison for this," and implied that he would take himself and me out before the cops came to get him. I was so scared he would find out before he was arrested. Marie is incredibly brave to go through that, knowing that the guy she was hanging out with was already a murderer, I imagine the fear would be so much worse O.O

this is a bittersweet case. I'm sad for Louise that she met such a brutal end but she was well aware he was a murderer serving an abysmal sentence of 10 years that she shortened by getting him released early, thus, shortening the justice for the victim he strangled. I'm in awe of Marie and her bravery and her final message to him was perfect! again, it's bittersweet because no one deserves to be killed like that.

She helped that man getting out of prison early and contributed to the victim not getting the justice she deserved. It's very sad that she was murdered and I hope she never met that man but it still makes me very angry that she helped him get out early

We don’t know what lies he told her when he was in jail. This story is insane! Marie is brave to put herself in that situation. I can’t believe police moved on so quickly from the killer without further investigation. The case could’ve been solved so much quicker. It’s a shame when police get that sort of “tunnel vision” and just move on. He seemed suspicious from the start and he was already a convicted killer, how could they just let that go?! The bank statements were an immediate identifier.
Sadly this happens more often than not! Truly love Marie and am thankful for PIs like her.

I hate police, and consider them to be untrained, lazy and prejudice. However (and we know this), these men can be so incredibly manipulative. What annoys me most is that we are relying on police to assess situations- relying on idiots. But we need to have actual experts talk with the man during the investigation- like a psychologist or someone with education and training. People who paid to go to university and an education. People who have skills and intelligence. Louise was an intelligent woman and she was manipulated by this man. Obviously police were going to be. But if there are checks and balances made by actual professionals upon the investigation and instructing police... maybe these things wouldn't CONSTANTLY happen. Private investigators are not only trained, they get extreme background checks. Police in Australia train for 24 weeks. Still- it is a lot longer than the 16 weeks NZ police train for. The system needs to be fixed
I'd like to know more about Marie and what she did afterward, did she go on to do private detective work? She should have been hired on the spot onto the police force if I'm in charge.
just looked it up. she apparently had to move back to Scotland and go into hiding for two years after the case but it seems like she continued being a private investigator

SSoup, I was worried for her during AND after she openly got involved with his case. Knowing that she returned to Scotland after he was arrested was smart and really fortunate that he died within two years, of hepatitis and freed from his mind.

I agree. I understand wanting to help people, but sometimes you have to do it from a distance and not get personally involved. She should have left it at the thank you letter and maybe put a little cash on his books but that's it.
it’s hard to put yourself in her shoes, especially when she seemed to think he showed real change by helping get another murderer convicted and getting someone out. as awful as he was, rehabilitation happens. it just doesn’t seem fair to blame her when the justice system clearly had judged him as not a threat and she can’t defend herself now
This is seriously one of the “best” cases I’ve heard! The way Bella tells this story unfolds a crime movie in my mind!!🍿 They should do a movie on this!! Marie is such strong human being for doing what she did!!🙏

Saw this case on an episode of Murder She Solved. You’re so good at this that you kept me entertained the whole time even though I’ve heard the story recently. What a case. What a shame.
I sometimes watch cases on different channels to get a different POV. Can be very eye opening. It is extremely dodgy becoming involved with someone behind bars for ACTUAL killing while under the influence of drugs. No matter how good they seem, they HAVE KILLED.

Brett is obviously a narcissistic murderer who gets aroused by killing and revisiting the scene. Had Marie said anything that made her look suspicious, he would have killed her too, because in a way, she was his next best available target. Marie was really brave to actually "work" with him.
What I'm curious about is that, if he was in a hurry to cover up Louis' murder, would he be so organized? Wouldn't he have left some sort of physical evidence? Because he'd have to keep up with her schedule. Maintain the time, calculate when she would leave, at what time she was to reach, and how long it would take her if she used a particular route (from the dump site to John's place)- which he has to cover in a small time frame.
I'm even more curious about his thought process than how he committed the crime. Very intriguing and more scary

I honestly don't see how investigators, other types of police, nurses, EMTS, paramedics, and doctors, other types of medical people and therapists have enough patients whenever they help people. Kudos to them. You don't know how much I appreciate you guys.

It would’ve been a lot easier to understand if you had spelled the word “patience” correctly, but instead you spelled it as “patients”, which is even more confusing because doctors and nurses and everybody else you mentioned do have both kinds of “patients/patience”. This is a situation where one little misspelled word makes a world of difference.
I was thinking “how would they not have enough patients?”
There's a novel called 'The Innocent Wife' by Amy Lloyd that shares some similarities with this case. Really good for anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers!

Out of all his super sus behavior I found it also really telling that his plan was for just him and Marie to search the woods for Louises body. Usually, if you think your loved one could be kept or buried somewhere in a huge and hard to search place like the woods, you'd try to get as many people involved in the search as possible.
On a sidenote, it might just be me but convicting him for 10 years for the murder of his first (?) victim and letting him off after just 8 years sounds incredibly disrespectful towards the woman he killed. And to me it felt like her murder didn't matter much because she's been a sex-worker. Sad thing is that I wasn't able to even find her name.

Im from Ottawa and I've never heard of this case before! I was only 5 when this happened but it feels close close home because well, it is. I loved chickadee magazine and now my own kids do. I think because it happened within the same city I automatically feel closer to the victim and thr case in general. I also have have point out that Marie is one bad ass woman, I'm so impressed by her bravery. Taking Louise away at the prime of her life no less is an absolute tragedy, she seemed like the kind of person who just wanted to make a difference, make others happy and see justice where it was due. I don't doubt the impact she would have made on the world, had her life not been stolen by someone so ungrateful for the help she gave him. He did the world a massive disservice by stealing Louise's future, she truly seemed to be a beautiful soul♥ r.ı.p
Marie is honestly such a brave woman, she went into this case (nevertheless being her FIRST CASE) trying to help figure out the case so she can get this horrid man in jail. Props to her!

For me, what I learned or better said confirm from this case is that murders murder again, that's why the should stay in jail forever. I understand that sometimes people deserve a second chance but not in those cases where the second chance could end in murdering again

I actually appreciate that she titles the cases this way bc I can't watch the ones that are unsolved. They leave me super anxious & upset afterwards knowing the criminal(s) got away w it & knowing they're still out there. Even if we know the case was solved it's still suspenseful bc we don't know who the killer is initially 🤷🏽♀️

What the hell was a CONVICTED MURDERER doing out of prison?!
I made the mistake on dating an ex-con who was still on probation and he tried to scam me but thankfully I ended things before it got outta hand. Being a single mother, one is so vulnerable especially when it comes to the wantingness of a companion. I will never judge anyone for the decisions they make because we simply do not know their mental space. I felt nothing but so much hurt for the woman who lost her life all because she saw the Good in evil. 😮💨

Marie was so very brave & truly said & did all the right things, except kissing him, I couldn’t have went there.😬🤮 I can’t imagine how unnerved she must have been around him at times, but she did such a great job with this care, especially this being her first case as a PI!😳 Just insane! So glad he was caught before he killed again. It’s just so sad for Louise, though.
