True. They are akin to someone who goes through a half bottle of single malt daily wondering around in a blind stupur, 'explaning' while they're not an alcholic. They can't fully appreciate how drunk they are, cause they're drunk. Tory commentators now form the same paradox.

He's always been very much of the right, his doctoral supervisor was Roger Eatwell. I'm surprised Kent uni allow him to remain on their teaching staff given that he's actively pushing a political narrative rather than analysing politics more generally, which is what I would expect of an academic. Mind you, he's got links to the Legatum lot, so possibly the uni gets donations from them to keep him on. That seems to be quite a common theme with populists, Johnson got a lot of money from Russia's RT to write "puff" pieces about how wonderful Russia is, when you start following the money, it's odd how it always seems to have come, by various routes, from the same place.

In Farage’s case this is quite deliberate. He hates the Tories because they not only wouldn’t listen to his “advice” but because they laughed at him (“swivel-eyed loons”, D Cameron) and he takes himself very seriously. He is firmly convinced that he is the one true “conservative” and that he should inherit the mantle of leading conservatism (if not “Conservatism”). So he’s playing the long game - destroy the Tories as they once were, leaving only a rump of the hardline right, then offer all those factions (ERG, NatCon, PopCon) the vision of a new “true” Conservative Party that will unify them, under his leadership, natch. We could call it The Reformed Conservatives Party.

Farage is a Torie he is just sitting on the fence observing what side to jump too and it will be the side that serves Farage.
Many are going to see his true colour very soon.
Farage is no hard working citizen's saviour. Grave that many buy what he is selling.
Farage has the gift of the gab will give him that and that is all he has.

Actually what you are saying is not far off what Goodwin is saying. He doesn't think Reform supporters can be won over to the Tories either. The "grand offer" he presented as a long shot option. As for the Tories "appealing to the centre ground" it all depends what you mean by that. Personally I oppose the Rwanda policy, but opinion polls show that more voters support it than oppose it. What voters think is the centre ground may be different to what we might normally think it is.
Goodwin has argued that a catastrophic defeat for the Tories is very much on the cards. When he talks about the possibility of a hung Parliament, he is right it is possible. However I know from elsewhere he thinks it is unlikely. Predicting the next general election result is hard because of the voting system. A split right wing vote could potentially destroy the Tory party. If Nigel Farage decides to lead the Reform party, that could reduce the Tory vote to less than 20% and at that level they could get less than 50 seats. If that Tory vote goes to Reform they could get above 20% and win seats from the Tories. At the time of writing support for the political parties - excluding in Scotland - has become static, apart from between the Tories and Reform. With just 10% of the vote, the Lib Dems could win more seats than the Tories, like in the local elections.
The Tories go into the next general election as a very well funded political party. They will use that money to find dirt on the other political parties, like we saw with the Labour candidate in the Rochdale by-election. That is probably their best hope for doing "better than expected" at the next general election. I expect it will be a very dirty election with a low turnout.
Probably the result will be an anti-climax. Labour on around 420 seats, Tories on 150, Lib Dems on 30, Reform zero, Greens 1 and the rest going to Northern Ireland, SNP and PC
