    Good evening Oscar what a joy to watch these classic engines running so smoothly, I also find it enjoyable to see the boxes they came in, I remember the excitement as a kid taking the wrapping off my presents and seeing those lovely distinctive colours of either a hornby dublo or the bright red of triang. Short tonight I'm afraid but always enjoy watching take care for Eddy xx

      Good afternoon Eddy thank you again for taking the time to watch, glad you enjoyed seeing these items and some of the boxes they came in, definitely a part of it for me with very distinctive branding and the odd rusty staple and yellowed piece of Sellotape here and there, all good fun.

    Great feature Oscar, I aquired a 2 rail 8f a couple of weeks ago , thanks to my man in Stockport, along with two pristine boxed, super detail coaches, I'll need to get more of those, a great loco as you say, with lots of pulling power.

    The bits of metal in your 8F box are for 2-rail conversion. I've only seen them used with Trix locos. They wouldn't work with the Dublo 8F without changing the wheels, as for 2-rail obviously the wheels need to be insulated so the rails on the two sides aren't connected. Trix locos always came with insulated wheels, as Trix worked that way, drawing power between the centre rail and only one of the side rails, so two locos could be run on the same tracks (hence TTR, Trix Twin Railway). A Trix loco can be converted to 2-rail simply by removing the sprung contact pieces for the centre rail, and then fitting those little metal pieces under the bar for the centre contacts so that they serve as pick-ups, and pass power from the rail on one side to the original centre-rail pick-up bar. Of course they need to have their pick-ups on the side on which the wheels are insulated from the chassis.

      Good morning, thanks for the great detailed information it's very much appreciated. It seems like quite a complicated process to have undertaken to change one of these three Rail models over to two Rail, possibly many may have wanted to do this as there was a migration from 3 to 2 Rail model Railways/layouts. I'm sure I read somewhere in Hornby Dublo literature that they advised if you wished to convert your model from 3 to 2 Rail that unless you were an extremely competent engineer you shouldn't try it your self but take it to one of their agents/return to the factory for the necessary work.
      Take care.

      Good morning Gordon glad you enjoyed seeing this terrific Hornby Dublo model, I wanted one of these for a long time, I almost had a 2 Rail version at one point a while back, but I'm so glad I have this 3-Rail example now as it suits running on the tin plate track so well. Cam was the word I was struggling for! A very robust mechanism, it also has a little adjustment built into it with the two screws securing the lever/cam to the template base.

    Lovely loco the8F. amazing they made a bespoke riveted temder when they already had the Duchess tender. However, I dont find the 8F a particualrly strong puller of heavy trains as the flangeless drivers in the centre dont touch the rails so effectively a 2-4-0 not a 2-8-0. But lovely loco and a particularly nice box. As a child I always coveted a 8f but never achieved one. I dont recognise the two bits of metal.

    Hi Oscar, can I ask why you don't add any realistic landscape to your layouts? Is it because it detracts from the beauty of the trains, the reason I ask is that finally after 40 years I have spare room to build my 3 rail and I see so many beauirealistic layouts, but I think it should just be about the wonderful trains and the original diecast buildings, I love the whole art Deco look of them...hope you can advise.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Před 5 měsíci

      Hi, when I had a railway as a teenager in the early 80s, I had it a little bit like I've got at the moment just track and rolling stock and a few buildings here and I really enjoyed it. For whatever reason at that time I had decided to start to do some landscaping, trees, grass, that type of thing, and Peco foam underlay and ballast on all of the track work, I wasn't very good at it and I hated the effect when finished, I managed to ruin quite a few good pieces of rolling stock with weathering, I've been to the odd model railway show or two and read a little bit about landscaping and weathering in some model railway magazines. It seems like a good thing to do at the time. Once I got back into model railways quite by accident a few years ago and realised I was developing a layout. I made a decision at that point not to get involved in any landscaping, weathering or ballast on the track work. I continue to attend model railway shows/exhibitions quite frequently and hugely enjoy seeing the creations of others, but for me it works without the additional scenic effect. Sounds like a very exciting time if you're getting around to developing your own railway after those years of thinking about it, I came back to model/toy railways accidentally when my son was given the train set, I left it behind me in my early teens and had not really given it a second thought until I walked back into a model railway shop with my son look for a few bits and pieces and saw the second hand shelf with some Tri-ang items and the boxes I had as a child. It was all downhill from there...
      All the best.

    Another wonderful train and nice bit of running. Would I be right in thinking the 3 rail system adds a different set of rules when wiring, so if you only opened the points at one end of that loop you'd get a short as the loco passes over or is there another insulation taking place somewhere.

    • @mikehebdentrains
      @mikehebdentrains Před rokem +1

      The two running rails are both bonded in Hornby Dublo systems. having two points set differently on a passing loop would just mean that the third (centre) rail was live on both bits of track - and the points lock in place so would de-rail anything hitting them when they're set wrongly. (I think!) The addition of the insulating tabs can create an isolated centre rail before the point, so that locos only proceed when the point is switched correctly and power provided by the point.

    • @RobA500
      @RobA500 Před rokem

      @@mikehebdentrains Ah yes it would derail if going over the point set against it but if going over the correctly set point then as both track are live won't the pickups short on the point blades when passing over them.

    • @mikehebdentrains
      @mikehebdentrains Před rokem +1

      @@RobA500 Ah - I see what you mean, it doesn't, because each point blades is in two parts, isolated from the main track base - the fixed part of each is only powered when the associated moving part is touching the running rail. You can sort of work it out by freezing the video at around 13:19 (you can see the many points of insulation) and 13:28 (to compare what's where).

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Před rokem +1

      Good morning Robin great to hear enjoyed seeing this beautiful Hornby Dublo model locomotive in action. The points can be used in a number of ways to achieve different results, I've included (below) part of the first paragraph from the leaflet which comes with a set isolating points which may answer some questions, the remainder of the text really requires sight of the basic diagrams printed on it but I think this text the general idea. The point blades that move when they leave is switched are isolated until the relevant one comes into contact with an outside rail. The switch underneath the points energises the relevant centre Rail. The extension of the point blades which do not move are isolated to prevent shorting is the skate passes over them, hopefully I've described correctly and it's answered a few of questions.
      Thanks again take care.
      Oscar
      (ISOLATING SWITCH POINTS ISPR/ISPL
      The Hornby-Dublo Isolating Switch Points include a switch which isolates electrically the section of track against
      which the Points are set. One advantage of this feature is that, when used in conjunction with a Hornby-Dublo Insulating Tab a train may be brought automatically to a stop before fouling Points which have not been correctly set. Another advantage is that sidings and branches are automatically isolated when the Points are moved against them. If it is desired to move a train straight ahead the Points are set for this by means of the lever provided, and this switches the current on for the straight run and cuts it off from the branch. Moving the lever to divert the train to the curved branch also leads current to the branch, and at the same time cuts it off from the straight run,
      The Terminal Rail T that is connected to the output terminals of the Controller or power unit must be at the blades or facing end of the Points.)
