Magic Aspect of Defense and Attack in Chess. Karpov vs Taimanov

  • One of the most important components of chess is active defense and this game illustrates its magic nature. The World Champion Anatoly Karpov exerts tremendous pressure on Mark Taimanov's position and is ready to start a decisive pawn storm. Taimanov doesn't have any counterplay and his position looks hopeless. But then the magic begins. Taimanov transforms matter into spirit, namely, by sacrificing a pawn, he activates his pieces and seizes the initiative. Now Karpov's position becomes critical and Taimanov finishes the game with one of the most beautiful combinations of his career.

I saw this video in my recommendations. You have a great way of explaining the thought process of the players. You earned a sub.

I'm glad that I caught the winning combination and saw the knight move setting up the dynamic defense, but I did not some anywhere close to seeing the full idea in that middle game.

Excellent commentary. It is a strategy on the black squares. 2 knights play better in closed positions.

Taimanov had already lost his famous match with Fischer (1971), and even then, he did fairly well throughout the games and mostly just slipped up towards the end of those games. Here Karpov did such a lovely job on the queen side, and indeed it seemed he was ready to shift focus to the king side if no threats from Black were created, but the G1-A7 diagonal, coupled with the well-placed d4 knight provided just enough counter play to reduce Karpov’s attacking potential. Then, while objectively about equal, the position left seemed unpleasant for White due to the cornered king and relatively ineffective bishop. So while it was a fine effort by Karpov to tie up the black queen side as he did, at least from my own games I learned that when I have as poor of a LSB as White did, I don’t like allowing the position to open up, and I either try and reroute it (like @ 4:55, I would be considering Bc2-a4, and potentially taking d7 or in some lines supporting d5 via c6; I acknowledge at that moment it’s not possible, but the thought would remain). So unfortunately for Karpov, it makes sense the underlying pressure worked its way into a win for Black.
Excellent game choice and analysis as always. Wishing you a prosperous New Year, Sir.

Fischer beat Taimonov in the match decisively, and Karpov can't; it shows greatness of Fischer.
