    thanks Skyler , Im an older guy and buy a considerable amount of reduced steaks chicken breasts , fish , pork chops, ect, I had a pretty good handle on freezing , in fact tried a bunch of different methods, there was still a little freezer burn here and there but overall pretty good , your method with the stretch wrap applied first to remove As much air as possible is a good idea, I always used the freezer bags but kind of hard to remove all the air, Im going to try your method, very pleasing to see such a young guy take an interest in this sort of food information thank you very much

    But can you remove the cling wrap while it’s still frozen or does it have to thaw out first?

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před 3 lety +6

      It depends on the cut of meat, if there’s a lot of grooves for the cling wrap to be stuck in it may be tough without tearing it. If it’s fairly smooth you can usually remove it. Another option would be to rinse the meat with cling wrap for a few seconds with hot water and remove right away. Make sure not to get the meat wet if doing that though!

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před 3 lety +2

      Usually by smell or coloration. Meat will smell rancid and freezer burned red meat will turn to a tan color at the edges. If it’s only partially freezer burned you can take edges that are freezer burned and filet them off and still cook the meat. Sometimes it’s a little lower quality, but it’s still edible, in my opinion.

    Can you wrap meat that's already frozen? I bought meat in bulk a week and a half ago, popped it in the freezer and noticed yesterday it's already got a little ice crystallizing on it because my bags aren't great.. Would love to just unzip the bags and use this method but wasn't sure if I could do it without thawing the meat first.

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před rokem

      I’d thaw the meat a little, but it shouldn’t need to be completely unthawed. Just enough that the outer portions of the meat become unfrozen. After that, wrap in the plastic wrap. Could probably throw it back in the zip bags you already used if you’d want to reuse them.

    • @skylerarent

      As long as it's sealed up it should be fine. The issue is when air is able to get to the meat, which would cause some freezer burn.

      I have! It does work pretty well for it. If you take care when wrapping you can make them fairly square, which makes for easy stacking in a freezer. With that said I usually use tube style ground meat bags, however. They are much quicker for a large quantity of meat!

    wouldn't a vacuum sealer be better?

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před 8 měsíci

      good question! It definitely is a good option. In my experience, the method shown is more durable. Vacuum seal bags can get holes when moved relatively easy. This breaks the vacuum, allowing for air to cover the meat, which over time can cause freezer burn. However, with that said, vacuum seal bags are great for creating uniform packages that stack really easily. I prefer them for thin, delicate meats like fish.

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před 3 lety +10

      I have and use one, however I find this to be more durable. I’ve had vac seal bags shift and the bags have gotten small cuts and leaked air in, causing freezer burn. While it’s rare, it happens. Also, this is quite a bit cheaper if you’re doing quite a bit of meat. Vac sealers definitely do have benefits with simplicity and ease, though!

      Vacuum sealer is better and I love mine but it can get expensive, especially since brands like food saver purposely make you use a ridiculous amount of excess bag to seal something. I like Skyler's idea when you want to do smaller individual stuff, like wrapping brats separately. With the food saver, you'd have to use about 4" of bag for each brat.

    Why would you want to keep meat "forever"? Just throw it away if you're never going to eat it. Outside of that, simple aluminum foil will keep meat, without freezer burn, for at least 3 years which is plenty long enough.

    • @skylerarent
      @skylerarent  Před 2 lety

      Truly I wouldn’t, it’s more that it can be done. I currently don’t have anything more than a year old, to my knowledge.
      In the past, however, I’ve lost a package in the bottom of my freezer for a while. The longest so far has been five years. Thawed, cooked, and ate just fine.
      I imagine aluminum foil could work, as you are creating a mostly air tight space around the meat. You bring up a good point. A person should make sure to be using meat they get. I just like to be able to lengthen that time period and protect the meat as best as possible.

      I do sometimes! They definitely work. From my experience, I’ve found that they are easier to puncture when moving the frozen bags around, which then can allow air to get to the meat. The durability is the biggest reason I find this to be better, at least in my situation.

    • @steveareeno65
      @steveareeno65 Před 2 lety +5
