i think that's what made the show so freaking good. they always created side characters that felt like real complex humans, which made the show feel so much more realistic. in real life, everyone's got their own life and their own family drama and while you might feel like the main character sometimes (we all do), everyone is just as complex in their own way, and conflicting narratives is what causes conflict. A lot of shows screw up because they don't add this level of complexity to their side characters. Side characters often feel like plot devices that do exactly what the narrative needs them to do and it makes many shows seem simplistic and uninteresting because it's not how real people interact with each other.

Jane's dad was by far the most sympathetic character in the series. He wanted no part of Walter or Jesse's world. As a father ( and counting my blessings) I have no idea how I'd deal if Jane was my daughter. The unfortunate chain of events that later cost the lives of innocent airline passengers was a brilliant piece of writing that illuminates how the actions of "friends of friends" can change the course of one's life.

@@jeffery_tang Yeah, but if Jane’s dad loved her enough to discipline her by calling the cops, she wouldn’t be dead because there would have been no opportunity for Walt to turn her body over onto her back. Besides, getting arrested for drug possession doesn’t necessarily mean jailtime. My friend Jay was arrested as a drug dealer, and he was ordered by the court to choose between jailtime or inpatient rehab. He chose to go for rehab at Teen Challenge where his life was completely transformed, and he was never the same again. Today, he is married to a beautiful woman and has a wonderful child with her.
That’s why I can’t stop crying about Jane’s death. It’s not just that she was trying really hard to keep clean, given that she’s 18 months sober. It’s not just that she’s Jesse’s first love. It’s not just that her death represents a significant turning point in Walt’s morality. It’s not just that her death leads to the deaths of dozens and dozens of airplane passengers as well as her own father’s suicide. It’s also because of the missed opportunity cost of what could have been. It’s the potential beautiful life that Jane and Jesse could have built for themselves, just like my friend Jay did with his life and how even his parents recovered from drugs too.

    “I GOT CIVIL RIGHTS!”
Even in a serious scene like this, Jesse still manages to be funny. Something about the way he says this, I don’t know how the show is capable of pulling that off so many times.

Jesse: "I pay my rent, I have civil rights."
Jane's dad: "You're right sir. I owe you an apology. Please forget my temper, have a lovely afternoon."

What most people don't realize is the symbolism of Jane's Dad storming in and punching Jesse. It subtly delivers the message that he disapproves of Pinkman being with his daughter.

"Maybe it's better for you to just go to the cops" Jesse says that to Walter when he talked about killing Gale when they were in laser tag, and that's what Walter should have done when he was worried about Jesse and Jane, the same thing her father thought of doing
