    It must lighten your spirits to know that you can now afford Jean Paul, a master stone mason to completely redo the facade. Well done. Lovely work Jean Paul. Let’s remember, too, the young men JP has working with him, learning their craft from a master. Such luck for them.

      @NouriaDiallo Před rokem +83

      @@ashpash78 the product was probably a ready-to-use one coat render much too rigid to accommodate the movement of an old building. Probably containing cement or a very hydraulic lime like a NHL5. The traditional lime plaster uses carbonic or slightly hydraulic lime like a CL90 or NHL2, that stay somewhat flexible inside because some of it does not carbonate (the surface does and becomes hard). It also means that if there are micro cracks, the uncarbonated lime fills it and repairs it. That's why some roman constructions are still standing 2000+ years after they were built.

    You are so, so fortunate to have Jean Paul and his crew working on this project! Clearly, Jean Paul est un véritable historien du bâtiment, and the crew are not only masterful craftsmen, they are efficient and actually SHOW UP!... and they FINISH the job. Here in the US, with the notable exception of a relatively craftsmen and women from Mexico, we just don't have those five essential elements in the same stucco crew (knowledge of the history of materials and techniques, relevant experience and skill, efficiency, predictability and tenacity).

      Hey, Lew (from Paris) ! I am surprised. I thought you had multiple craftsmen for this - and for lots of other things. Where does this lack come from, in your opinion ? Because those ancient technics were used in Europe and, as the US became quickly the country of modern technics, US craftsmen never really had to work with them ? Do you have any idea ?

    Good to see you are highlighting the difference between workmen & tradesman. Workmen do important work that has to be functional & up to code, very difficult! Good tradesmen do work that is functional, up to code & artistic, they look at the entire scenery and manage to enhance it all whilst providing a specific function. So happy you have found master craftsmen to work on your beautiful home.

    Such a heartwarming video, full of family, beauty, work, and play. I’m now realizing that maybe the reason I keep watching your videos isn’t just the quality of sound and image, not just the projection of a dream (nightmare?) to renovate a chateau, not just the humor and good vibes. Perhaps above all it’s the learning opportunities that come from your respect for the artisans. The plastering, the stonework, the masonry, the painting, the carpentry (Benoit!), the wallpaper, the electrical work, the plumbing, the gardening, the landscape design and arborist work, the history, the cooking. What have I missed? Roofing, relationship building, child rearing, Ziggy raising?
    Have you named your chateau? Or is that pretentious? How about Le chateau artisanal? Ou peut-être tout simplement Chateau Arthur?
    Vielen Dank und best of luck as ever!

    Most craftsmen, renovation companies or architects don't have a clue or even don't know that lime does exist. Most of old buildings are still plastered outside with cement or with ready made mix that are not breathable and cannot accommodate the move of the building. People are happy with the neat finish the first months but later they will spend fortune to cover the cracks and paint regularly their facade (and complain about humidity problems).

    It is soooo pleasing to see the youth of today picking up and working and learning the old trades. I have noticed many of todays youth (anyone under 40 is young to me😹😹😹being 60 everyone feels younger these days😹😹😹)I love watching people learning the old ways, they learn that the old ways are really better than what so many people really think. In todays fast living it’s nice to watch the young really learning and understanding and learning to slow down.
    As horrible as it is having to live through all of that nasty dust and construction site again it will be so worth it, this team of stone masons are really doing a great job specially sourcing locally the raw materials as it would have been done at the time when building the Chateau all those years ago.
    I loved how you got in there and gave it a go, it is such a hard job I spent 6 months building and rendering a wall down the back of my yard I still have one wall to render up near the house but I am going with the old way of doing it as I hated the modern way I was shown, I have local sand that I collected and cleaned for the job and because Dad loves marigolds that’s the colour I am going with, I tired the yellow but did not like the colour, not really a fan of too much yellow 😹. so have used the more orange red colour, I have to wait for summer now as we are heading into winter now 😹😹at least I got one thing right when I did my first wall😹😹😹I too used a small trowel for smoothing the surface as I did not like the sponged affect it went all grainy where as with my small trowel I got the soft smooth affect flat but with just a slight waviness to the wall.

    How wonderful that you are able to now realize the new facade. It was Fascinating learning how they mix the morter for the facade. I also liked the same sample you both chose as well. I hope this new company can deliver the perfect results.

    I cut some cornus from the local park and put them in water and they all took so now I have about ten plants, easy peasy. I also took cuttings from a Forsythia and they took, also a Buddleia. Many plants are so easy to take from cuttings like Hydrangeas. Anyone on a budget can easly make a garden.

    It looks so simple and easy, but apparently you really need expertise and lots of experience for this beautiful historical technique of rendering. {please more of this beautiful yoga content! Zugabe, Zugabe!}
