Leaking Heat Exchanger Replacement of a Navien NPE180S Tankless Water Heater

  • How to replace a leaking heat exchanger on a Navien NPE series tankless water heater. Although Navien NPE series is my favorite tankless water heater due to its easy to work on and repair modular design of the internal components, I am still reluctant when it comes to replacing leaking heat exchangers. It's due to the inconvenience of having to deal with Navien tech support and going through the warranty approval procedure.
    Tools needed for this procedure:
    1. Screw Driver with Magnetizer - amzn.to/3JSdzgi
    2. My favorite pliers sets:
    - Single Pliers Medium Size - amzn.to/3sZfwBc
    - Two Pliers Set, Medium & Large - amzn.to/3znkMQC
    - Three Pliers Set, Small, Medium & Large - amzn.to/3pMuyII

      Yes, it is smarter to just get a new water heater if 16 years old. You can try a flush but that can trigger a heat exchanger leak. One way or the other you will need a new water heater soon. www.noritz.com/media-archive/16-Error-code.pdf

    Thank you your video. I am currently own the Navien NPE 240A. I recently encountered the water discharge a steady stream down to the sewer line. I went to replace the O Ring on the cold water inlet. It improved a lot . Now it is just dripping little bit that you couldn’t hear the sound of water. I know it dripping by look down the discharge pipe. By saying that, it is normal now or something I have to do.

    The people that installed my NR180 diagnosed a failed/leaking heat exchanger as the problem for the condensation pump constantly running and loud knocking when it tried to ignite. Now that Navien sent them a new heat exchanger, they're telling me it'll take about 7 hours for them to make the switch. After watching your video I'm starting to doubt their honesty

    Navien is catching some shade
    But what everybody seems to forget is how Navien does take care are it’s not that difficult to a pro tech. Navien ok, and condensing HX are maintenance seekers and get lonely mostly. 🙂😉

    What was the symptom? Water leaking internally/excessively through condensate line or just leaking outside the whole heat exchanger? Or combo of both?

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  Před 2 lety +1

      Depending on the stage of the malfunction, it could be one or all of the symptoms you mentioned. It starts with constant discharge throughout the condensation line, and progresses to a water sputter through the fan assembly air intake inside the unit. Everything internally gets wet eventually.

    Hey great video man. Should you test the new part for leaks after installing it? Im hearing theyre sending out a lot of deffective heat exchangers.

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  Před 2 lety +2

      I never ran into a defective heat exchanger. Yes, I always allow up tp 30 mins after I pressure the system and before I put the front panel back, so I can check for leaks.

    What is typical labor cost for replacing a heat exchanger in Navien tankless water heater (e.g. NPE-240A)? I have a plumber quoting me $4000 for labor only

    Just a little over 3yrs old and my 240S was pour water out, as soon as open the water line. I called Navien, it was a bit of a hassle, since they only like dealing with contractors. But after a bit of talking, they kinda figured out I wasn't a moron and helped me. They sent me a new one and I was able to replace in a little over an hour. Now after a week, I see a small trickle of water. I wonder how normal this is?

    I see what looks like a water softener in the distance. Has it always been in service?
    What part of the country do you reside; perhaps, there’s a reason that your clients are having continuous heat exchanger issues.

    Thanks Dennis; great video. I don't have a Navien, but after seven years of service, experienced the same problem with a Takagi (T-K3-OS). Looks like Navien is put together much more straight forward than Takagi, but essentially the same plug-n-play, just more unplugging and replugging with Takagi. Most important was the screwdriver. It really needs to be long and magnetized. Could you share the model and make of your screwdriver and magnetizer? Thanks again!

    I thought Navien heat exchangers would be more durable since they're made of stainless steel (vs. copper).
    I hope the one in this video is still covered by warranty.
