The Illinois Roadkill: The Largest Typical EVER Killed By A Car!

- If you’ve driven enough in rural American, especially in midwest states like Illinois and during November, you know the nuisance deer can be when it comes to vehicle collisions. What if I told you, one particular buck was so mammoth it’d forever be coined the Illinois Roadkill Buck.
Here’s the story of the 400lb whitetail with a 31” outside spread buck. This buck dates back to the year 1965 on a cold November night. A motorist was traveling from Fort Madison, IA and traveled down IL HW. 96 about two miles east of the small Mississippi river town called Nauvoo - located in Hancock County, IL.
Suddenly, a large form came out of the ditch and onto the roadway. For the driver, there was no avoiding the collision and the impact was signaled by a solid thump. The ginormous buck met it’s death to a 1962 Chevy pickup truck.
Another big buck had met his demise at the front end of a vehicle. Not long afterwards, Illinois conservation officer Jim Twitchell was directed to pick up the road-killed deer. Jim and the others who saw the deer found themselves unable to believe the size of either the body or the rack. They were enormous!
The gentleman who hit The Illinois Roadkill Buck with his truck, later sold the giant whitetail, to antler collector Dick Idol. Idol would then sell the buck to Dr. John Morgan, who then founded the legendary collection, and then in the 90’s Larry Huffman purchased the collection.
The team has actually had the privilege to see this deer in person and here’s the scoring breakdown from Keith Snider that owns the historic buck:
The antlers certainly have shrunk some since the buck was hit that night back in 1965, but even now, the outside spread across the beams remains an unbelievable 31 inches. The buck’s head was proportionate to his rack and body, and the distance between the antler burrs is 3 1/2 inches. That gap is one of the largest I’ve ever seen.
Although the body and skin are long since gone, the antlers remain as evidence of what a great buck he was. Besides such spectacular dimensions and statistics as weighing 11 pounds and having a 31-inch spread, 6-inch bases, 29 and 31-inch main beams and 12 points, with any luck at all this rack could have been near the top of the record book. His left beam has five classic typical points, but instead of a typical G-4 (third primary) off the main beam on his right antler, this buck grew a third tine off the second primary (G-2), making it an abnormal deduction. If this point had grown off the main beam as a typical tine, the Illinois giant’s net typical score would have been over 20 points higher than it actually is simply by moving one tine!
Because his right antler has only four typical points, the “Illinois Roadkill,” as he is called, scores as a giant 8-pointer. From a scoring standpoint, he gets no credit for the extra typical point on the left beam (the 7 5/8-inch G-4 tine) because it doesn’t have a mate on the right beam. Despite all of this, the buck has an unbelievable gross score of 202 6/8, which is unheard of for an 8-point typical. Unfortunately, when the abnormal points and side-to-side differences in symmetry are subtracted, he winds up with a net of 176 5/8. This is a respectable score that easily makes the B&C record book, but it hardly reflects the true size of the antlers. The truth is that many think this buck is one of the most impressive deer of all time. In person, he’s almost too big to believe!
So all of this begs the question - are deer scores overrated? Is the Boone and Crockett scoring method antiquated? Regardless - this deer is truly a one of a kind and will forever be known as one of the most impressive deer to walk the earth.
Oh and one last thing - it was peak rut when this buck was hit on the IA/IL border. Some could wonder if this could have been an Iowa back that swam across the river? Could you imagine if this buck was coined the Iowa Roadkill buck? I can't.

Fun fact: That looks nothing like the deer I shot last year.
😂👍
Baaahaahahahaha...thats a good one 😁...mine didn't either !!!
"Road kill" buck. Not hit by car, shot from window, road killed. You know....hahaha
@@sweetsour4459 You do know what I mean right? It’s a joke about how big that deer is vs the deer I took last year.
@@themadcatter5849 yes I got your joke. Was pretty good
I work in Nauvoo. The legend of this buck is still talked about locally. Incredible deer!
I almost hit a record non typical driving from Prescott WI to the Twin CIties. a half mile after crossing the bridge to MN this monster was standing in the roadway. He gave me a look then the guy coming the other way (we both had stopped) and trotted off. It looked like he had a bush stuck in his rack until I realized it was all antler. It took all of 5 seconds but it felt like an eternity.
What year was this?
Minnesota has monsters.
I have always wanted to purchase 2 replica mounts from AntlersbyKlaus. The Illinois Roadkill and the Jordan. The story behind the Jordan, as well as the near perfect symmetry, make it my favorite. However, The Illinois Roadkill is much closer to my home in MO and is a true jaw dropping giant. Between the mass, symmetry, and story of the Jordan, as well as the frame and spread of the IRK, I know ill have a high bar to shoot for with my own trophies.
When I finally get to build my hunting/man-cave building, I'm incorporating the extra money for those two replica mounts to adorn the wall. I'll have so much pride seeing my own trophies hang next to monarchs like these, even if they are only replicas
Moral of the story, when you’re rich, you can have anything you want.
It's not the real deer
That thing is a tank. I wonder how the truck fared??
" I gotta have that Deer " Lol..I love hearing that line
Reminds me of the intro song on TK and Mike's Deer Hunting video lol....
Keith Snider how did you get it from the last guy?
Look up the medusa buck 24 point monster. Quadruple drop tines. Shot on public land in Nova,Scotia, Canada
So did he ever get the buck in his house? Or did he have a replica,
Yesterday morn going to work I seen 4 deer crossing the road. 2 of them were bucks in velvet starting to grow. It is very exciting to see and I dont even hunt. I do not care how much gas price is come Oct-Nov I drive the rural outskirts of my Iowa county just to spot the ghosts!
One of the most iconic bucks of all time! Call me a conspiracy theorist, but this could have easily been an Iowa buck!
Not at all. Lol have u seen some the bucks in IL that's been killed? Iowa gots some toads but this is 100% a IL genetics
Well the two states do connect..
@@renoanderson9549 they are Separated by the Mississippi river but I’ve seen deer swim across that river
Illinois has giants also. Everyone acts like its hard to kill a big buck in Illinois. Illinois is a destination people wait on prime hunting land to go up for sale and you got multiple people fighting over it. Iowa also has giants but Everyone acts like Illinois is northern Wisconsin or something
“When I turned 16, I called Dick Idol”.
Really?
When I was 16 I had a net worth of maybe $500 dollars and that included my car.
I want to know if anyone wrote down the score if that fork tine was not connected and was seperate like normal tines..has anyone guessed how much the score wouldve been?
You guys need to do one of these videos on the Mitch Rompola Buck!
That thing has been beat to death
I’d like someone to once and for all settle the arguments about it being real.. Mitch was a very peculiar guy but he was a big buck slayer, not too hard to believe that he killed that buck for real, not to mention the property that he hunts is basically where Jesus left his shoes, NOBODY goes back there, especially then..
@@kylemurray7086 I lived about 30 minutes from traverse city and to say there are absolute giants up there is an understatement. I’ve met 2 people that had met Mitch rompola way back when and he’s shot other giants and never told anyone about them.
@@incognitothanks8424 Yeah I’ve heard the same thing, his wall in his house was full of studs.. he just hunts like he is hiding from people and that’s exactly how he’s killing these big bucks, because he goes where nobody else will.. and he’s too shy to brag about it, and look what happened to him the one time he did brag.. and his troubled past made people instantly think he was full of it..
Plenty of coverage of rompola
Likely that road was the only public land it ever stood on.
Failed to mention how he was finally able to acquire the Buck ?? Kind of a important detail to the story .
It’s a replica mount. As are all of his legendary deer. You don’t think this guy really got his hands on all of these original, record bucks do you? He has a whole collection of replicas
@Jim Lahey That is the original and yes he owns it with many other originals. How he ended up with them in some ways is very privileged information.100% Original.
that animal has an aura.
I never understood why they don't just use gross score.
Why did he have to buy it if he hit it. Does it have to be tagged
Does anyone know exactly where the deer was hit by the car
Have a cabin between Hamilton and navoo
Man, it doesn’t get much better than the Illinois road kill! Absolutely beautiful animal
This guy has more replica mounts than Cabelas
thats the deer i missed last sesion
So how did he end up with the deer?
If you watch his whitetail cribs episode, the full story is in there!
@@ExodusOutdoorGear I did last year, guess I'll have go watch again👍
@@ExodusOutdoorGear No the full story isn't there. He doesn't go into any detail about how he got it.
Outta staters always get the best deer lol
So how did he get it ? I feel shorted
He purchased it from the Legendary Whitetail collection
Thanks
First one to watch!
They say the biggest bucks die by car
His horns kinda come out a little more off the side of his skull, ala the Rompola buck, mmmmmm
An they say the rompola buck aint real lol
This deer shows how flawed the scoring system is. When are they gona stop using pny and bnc. It's garbage.
If someone hunted and killed that deer. They would’ve needed the whole town to come and drag it lol.
Watch out for dem deers
First!
Why would you make a video for 170 Inch barely Booner Buck that already had a video made about it? Makes no sense
Just so you’d complain
your the one that makes no sense.
Barely a booner...ha...like you have a buck that nets 176 as a mainframe 8 point
Score isn't everything. Clearly it must be just majestic to see in person. Just the presence of it dimensionally is crazy.
Vegas23 might be the biggest square here
I had a deer like this walked by once and passed it up..settled for landing my wife of 22 years instead..😊
