The WORLD RECORD LARGEST TYPICAL BUCK Ever Killed!

- November 23rd, 1993, the day Milo Hanson's life changed forever. Long before social media, the mass adoption of the internet, there was still a buck that caught the attention of the world and de-crowned the longstanding Jordan Buck record that buck was shot by none other than Milo Hanson.
Milo Hansen was and is a farmer out of Biggar, Saskatchewan and lived the average farmer life. That was until he crossed paths with the world record, typical Whitetail. But the story has to start before that. Well, story has it, a school bus driver tipped off Milo that this giant deer was feeding in certain fields the year prior, and then the secret was out locally.
It was said that bow hunters and muzzle-loader hunters were all chasing the soon to be world record white tail. The deer made it through those seasons and then November 15th rolled up.For the rifle season opener, Milo assembled a hunting party that planned on trying to push and find this giant buck. That opening day, they see the deer and saw it was later bedded on posted ground. That opening weekend, they did not connect with the giant buck.
They found the buck on November 23rd. It was bedded in a smaller woodlot and they had a planned to use one pusher and three shooters. Eventually the buck ran in front of Milo Hanson, who shot the buck with his rifle in the upper rib dropping it. It was reported that Milo and his hunting crew just didn't know quite how big this buck really was.
Once word got out that the buck was shot, Milo recounts, more and more people started showing up. In fact, for eight days, the Buck's head was in the barn unlocked as people came through to check out the buck. There were times where people were showing up when they weren't even home. But it drew a crowd from all directions.
He had a friend come to score the deer and in disbelief, he roughed scored it at 214 inches. He then later had another score come up with a 214 inch measurement as well. That's when it was setting in, that he had the new world record typical whitetail.
Eventually north American Whitetail caught wind of the buck and the potential of it being the new world record, they hopped on a jet that same day flew to Saskatchewan and the next morning they arrived at the Hanson Farm. Gordon Winnington recounts seen the head and Cape of the buck on the floor of the room and knew instantly that this was well big enough to dethrone the Jordan Buck. He stated they were there for almost 12 hours that day and there was no reach of a tape measure. The cover story came out February, 1994, and it was one of the best-selling issues of all time still to this day.
Now, one of the only mild controversies of this buck was the electrical tape between the left brow tine and G2. When Milo was shooting the buck with the Winchester model, 88, a bullet had hit the tine and it started cracking significantly, but it clearly didn’t break. The tape was there just to ensure that it didn't snap.
Now let's talk about the deer itself. The buck ended up taping at 213 5/8 inches. The gross typical score tallied up to 220 inches. The main beams measured 29 inches and it had an inside spread of 21 inches. Gordon of North American Whitetail in 1995 at dinner with Milo in Dallas, Texas to told him that deer record would not last for over 10 years because of the amount of big sheds and everything else happening in the deer world. It's now almost 28 years later, the record is holding strong as ever, but the old adage that records are meant to be broken, comes to mind. The real question is when will this happen?
Is it 50 years from now? Is it 10 years from now? Or is it even this year? No one knows when this might happen, but the world will know much faster than it took for the time for word to get out about the Milo Hanson Buck.

Record bucks are not just about size, but genetics and symmetry. There are probably bigger typicals, but what makes Hanson's buck so amazing is his astonishing symmetry and lack of deductions, combined with the fact that he was a young deer. Imagine that deer at two to three years older.
Who in there right mind would pass it to get a few years older on a true free range deer
That deer is not young look at its neck!
@@kalebmcdaniel9147 the boone&Crockett looks over the deer teeth body build it mite be 4 1/2 but a buck dont get there full size till 6 1/2 to 8 1&2 then they will start to lose size
@@warrengreen3217 the deer was aged at 3.5 if I remember right which is crazy to think about a deer that young that big
Arguably the most aesthetically pleasing and iconic whitetail buck of all time.
The Hansen buck is about as close to perfection as you can get. An absolute monarch.
the amount of pressure that buck felt was probably insane.
That's not Milo..... that's El Chapo! 😂
I still wonder what he would have looked like in a couple of years. He is as big as he will ever be. Great buck
Got the guys autograph on an old school buckmaster hat. I've seen this mount in person. Awesome buck
Toren1156 just a guess….you’ve never done anything of any significance so you’ve gotta downplay other peoples accomplishments a lot huh?
I remember as a young hunter hearing about this buck. Don't matter what anyone else believes its a beauty of a buck. Congratulations Milo
Oh man North American whitetail magazine that brings back some memories
This buck and story still amaze me!
Hes so lucky that the beam didn't break from the bullet!!
I still think the Jordan buck is the biggest as far as mass but I love them both. I couldn't imagine shooting something that big
I've seen that mount in person back in 94 at the hunting show in malton Ontario. It's truly impressive. I also met Milo Hansen as he was there presenting it. Great guy, amazing antlers and to be honest an incredible story. The bullet to the antler is real. Milo was very fortunate that the antler didn't get blown off!
Corn fed and injected?
Milo truly is a great guy, and a wonderful blue-collar representative of all hunters. I took my sons to meet Milo and see his buck at a hunting show in Georgia back in the mid-90's, and what really stood out to me about Milo was how well he treated my kids and how much time he spent with them. They remember that to this day, and that positive encounter helped cement them as life-long hunters. Milo has met so many people over the years that I'm sure he doesn't remember us, but I'll be forever grateful to him for giving my boys a great once-in-a-lifetime memory. This world record belongs to not just a good hunter but a good person, and that's important to the hunting legacy.
Theres a replica at my workplace(basspro) in the “meeting” room. I come visit it time to time just to think of his incredible life. It’s unbelievable..
I stare at the image daily wishing I could see it in person.
A true work of art by mother nature. Id imagine that this record will be broken in the next few years. We almost saw this with the Dustin Huff buck and the Johnny King buck.
In many people’s opinion the King buck is the rightful record holder. It makes it appear that there is some politics at play.
@@chrishenry5945 I 100% agree. From the eye that is a typical rack.
Does anyone else think this is a little fishy of a story.
You would likely be correct there.
Agreed. But no more fishy than the Mitch Rompola buck. 216 typical
@@backwoodsbully9841 lol valid point. Johny king buck is a good story.
Most of these big buck "stories" are BS.
Canada has giant deer and one of the previous records had been lost by a taxidermist moving around and then eventually being found in a garage sale. Thing is this was before hunting went glamour. Now everyone has a CZcams channel, sponsors, face paint and farms for deer not cattle. I know here in Maine the state record is like 100 years old and will stay for longer cause too many hunters are ok with shooting a 60lb fawn or spike horn. Hunting has turned into money first experience and harvest a distance 2nd.
Ive seen this buck in person many times!!
I'm canadian the white tail deer in western Canada are monsters they're in every province I seen a white take farm in manitoba one time couldn't believe how many there was
This guy didn’t even go out and hunt this buck! He drove around in the field until he got his shot!
Yeah but he did.
Have you ever hunted in Saskatchewan?
That’s how everyone hunts in Saskatchewan
One was killed down my way last week..bow kill..212 gross green..208 net green...looks like Hanson buck..but way more mass..obviously Slightly less score
Awesome buck. Would definitely test a hunter's ticker!
I watched a buck running through my neighbors cattle a week ago that was just a monster like this Hanson buck
@@hankbishops5226 send me location!
I'm gonna be honest, great video, but Milo's hunting story of how he got that buck is poop.
It would be legendary to get Mitch Rompola on here. A story that needs to be heard. Probably not gonna happen, but maybe if he sees enough support he'll tell his story.
The story everyone wants to hear
@@ExodusOutdoorGear maybe if the interview had nothing to do with the terms "world record" or any controversy, we all just wanna see some big whitetails! Great stuff you guys do. Just watched your video on recovery time for cell cams, how long until those are available?
I still believe Rompola's buck was legit, don't know why he handled it the way he did, but it was real. The biggest crock of crap was all the keyboard warriors talking about the droopy ears, once a buck gets past 5,6, 7 years old etc, I've seen a ton of dead bucks with the same ear droop. Some he's just weird, or eccentric, I don't know but I believe the buck was legit.
@@WILDBILLSOUTDOORS I don't believe "he" handled it any way, I think everyone else ha dled it poorly. Starting with Milo. There's no question if the deer is real. The only question everyone is still chasing is where it came from. But I don't even care. I just wanna know some of his wisdom lol.
@@nemideergoon1844 true!
You need to look into jonny king buck
That previous record is so thick.
Beautiful
What was the name of the guy that pushed this buck out for Milo?... exactly!!!
What was the name of the 2nd place guy at Daytona 1952- exactly-
How does some pictures have it in like a full neck mount but others it’s just the rack and the skull
The deer was harvested in Bigger Saskatchewan and wasn’t exactly fair chase…it was chased though.
The guy hid that head in a combine hopper for a while before showing it.
The sad truth is most booners were harvested illegally
I'm curious as to how it's not fair chase?
Also how do you figure most booners were harvested illegally?
That buck had a little mule deer in his blood.
Was the rack from the Hanson buck ever x-rayed? He made a big fuss over Rompala's buck being the new world record. His bucks rack should be x-rayed
Now that’s thing a giant!!
Would love to have a video like this on the rompola buck butttttttt I guess we’ll never see them side by side 🤷♂️
because manufactured and manipulated deer horns are not allowed in the record books 😏
@peanutbutterripple1083 It's a fact that every single person that saw and handled the Rompola buck said it's a legitimate buck and rack. It's only those that have never had the opportunity to handle and inspect it that discredit it.
This buck just lost all its allure for me learning it was pushed, not hunted...
Milo Hansen is no hunter ashame that deer was killed like that sounds like us when we were teenagers out there walking around smokin weed . Dumb luck and got paid bigtime
I don't call that deer hunting. They drove the deer out like a escaped prisoner. With multiple shooters.
I may have no big bucks to take credit for but I have no help, its me against him no cheating.
If I don't kill one this year so what.
If he dies from old age, he out smarted me.
I'll be resetting that record this season!
You didn't reset it but how is your season been?
Saturdays our opener... Look out record here i come
I heard Milo missed his first shot the deer ran off and they tracked it and he took his second shot and hit it.
He hit it in the antler also, I think 3 shots
Any record on what’s the heaviest in weight ???????
431lb field dressed.
The record will never be broken. This all boils down to the theory of natural selection. As bigger bucks are being targeted more and more across the globe, the gene pool begins to be drained of the "big size" genes. In addition, with hunters preferring to shoot bigger bucks than smaller bucks gives the advantage of increased survival to the smaller bucks. The selective pressures of hunting have already begun outweighing the selective pressures of sexual selection and as a result, bucks are becoming smaller in size and racks. Milo Hanson's record buck will very likely never be broken.
Hmmm that is kinda true but they need age usually to get real big and by then have bred alot but i see your point that makes you think your on to something
So did milo or the bus driver tell the town? 😂
Pretty soon the CJ Alexander buck may be the new world record, certainly much bigger
Sounds more like a poaching story between friends
Ah...but the truth of where this buck will remain a secret
Going on 30 years still hasn't been broke
Saskatchewan the goat
He sold it to bass pro.....1million...He know's it coming...
I personally think the huff buck os more impressive.
Mitch Rompolas deer is the real world record ! The buck that Dustin huff killed last year is more impressive than the Hanson deer imo .
Indiana is on fire right now. 2 back to back state records broken. A typical and non typical in 2020 and 2021. Imo the best whitetail deer hunting state there is.
Flushed, chased, shot at, flushed again, chased some more, shot at, wounded, chased again, laid down, caught, the finishing shot through the H2 of left beam ( a whisker away from being blown off ), then finally a shot that ended the torture... hardly a fitting end to any deer, let alone the #1 typical.
Right. But stuff does happen
@@lesleyboeder1798 for sure it does, nothing like a monster buck to make guys do stuff they normally wouldn't do. Lol
So much easier to dig a hole, cover that hole, let deer fall in the hole, and that way you can just walk up shoot said deer. That's the way to do it boy.
The deer is beyond impressive, the story behind it is pitiful. Sit a tree stand, or make a blind out of branches, put on a solo stalk, but really? Using 4 guys to push the poor bastard out. That’s weak. Last season here in texas my little brother built himself a 1 seater box blind and set it up in a spot he liked and hand fed every morning and evening he hunted because he’d seen a mature buck in velvet earlier in the year in that spot, towards the end of the rut he finally got a shot at what think is that same buck. It’s a 138 inch 8 point shot on 1000 acres of low fence that only has low fence borders, the fact we’ve management hunted this place for 8 years and how he did it is far more impressive to me than the Hanson story.
Your brother shot a deer that he had been feeding? In other words, baiting? And you think a deer drive is unethical?
Have any world record for bucks being the biggest in mass?????? Any 400 pounders?????
Muley Bucks can get 400+ lbs
There was a shed off of this buck 2:39
the jordan buck is still the king
I'd love to see this animals rack every year till it was about 9. It's very possible he could of pushed 230 clean typical with another year or two. Some animals are just unique
The story of the hunt they killed this deer on is ridiculous.
They forgot to tell everyone about chasing it across countless fields and trashing their half-ton in the process. Chased that poor deer halfway around the country That’s the story I heard
Never heard that. He did chase on foot to get a better shot to finish it off. A vehicle was not involved.
@@mitchellthomas8432 so they say
@@mr.mclovin4172 No it's in court records. Hanson filed suit for loss of income since he would not be able to show his buck as the world record anymore. There were a few other things he listed but it's been so long since I read the story. I lost any respect for Hanson over that. That is part of it. If you're beat take it like an adult and go on.
Shouldn't count when u use all your buddies to push it to u,fish in a barrel, still nice buck, should be called buddy buck
Do you know he also hit the antlers with one of his shots, damaging the antlers!!!
Yea if u listened to the video u would have heard that.
The buck was killed in 1993 and at that time pushes with humans and dogs were very common they were hunting how they knew how and and they killed him awesome stuff..most ranchers don't really give a dam about big deer cus they see them all the time..
A deer drive and a how many hundred yard shot was it? Yep, real skill and fair chase rules here. Might as well have gotten the dogs out and run it down until exhaustion.
Well thats 5 laying claim to the record

Unfortunate that it was taking with a rifle by pushing
I Love the fact that it was a 3 year old, when all the rage is gotta wait till they’re at least 4, and to all those who say well just think if he’d have grown another year, ya he may have grown a sticker or 2 and NOT been the World Record!
