  • Film starts at 0:29. Samar (12) lives in Lod, a mixed city marred by poverty. She has an Arab-Israeli mother and a Palestinian father from the Occupied Territories. Linor (11) lives in Tlamim, a religious Jewish settlement.
There are only 67 km between Lod and Tlamim, but the girls are separated by a vast national, cultural, and ideological abyss. As participants in an education and technology program, their relationship begins with online correspondence. Meeting face-to-face adds an intense component to the two girls’ lives, sweeping them and their families into a profound and complex experience.

I felt sick watching this, I grew up in a mixed Catholic and Protestant area. No-one cared what religion our friends with, we knew via the schools attended. My parents were very open and likewise had mixed friends. Only a tiny minority were weird and bitter. Football games with Celtic v Rangers then we fought like cats and dogs, the next day we were friends again, so fickle and funny. Listening to that 'lady' tell that child her new friend was from a dirty world, turned my stomach.
She lied to her grandchild, children do love childhood friends. I lost childhood friends from a house fire (her whole family died, it was horrific) and a car accident and it broke my heart. The elitism and superiority is vile, I dont feel superior to anyone and I've travelled the world extensively.
The brainwashing was horrific to watch, adults are destroying the innocence of childhoods. I pray God guides her in the right direction, although at that age I sadly doubt it, 3rd generation ruined.

@When I Was Born for the 7th Time you told someone they dont know what racism is, but you yourself dont understand as much as you think you do. religion is relevant but so is racism.
Far right Israeli Jews, like the family shown in this, are opposed to any non Jews. As long as someone is Jewish, they're accepted. But lots of Jews aren't religiously Jewish. They're only ethnically Jewish. Even is israel. Non religious Jews who are only ethically Jewish are still accepted by the ones who don't believe in "intermingling".
But there is a kind of jew they dont accept...Ethiopian Jews. They're religiously the same, but they're black. And there are plenty of Arab Jews there. They're not accepted either. So for the kinds of people this is portraying, which equates to light skinned Jewish supremacists, race is absolutely relevant. And the person above knows what racism is.
They're not really "the same" people either. They are traced back to different histories. They're the same as far as humans in general go, but the social constructs of race and ethnicity that we separate ourselves by today also separates arabs from many Israelis.

one is conflicted with her arab identity because the message her environment is telling her and another is already taught to fear the arab identity through her environment. At this point, one would have to ask how people will be able to move away from this cycle of fear and hatred because we see three generations already affected and children are growing up wanting to understand but not receiving a proper answer, only an "us vs them".

The irony is that any religious person who follows this innate humanity is going to be labelled as a moderate. "Do you know more than god?" they're told. Piety is often a synonym of heartlessness.Look carefully, those religious people who are kind to others of a different religion are disobeying some of the injunctions of their religion.
Nothing good can come out of a situation where religion is placed first before humanity.

Yes the girls have pure hearts and souls but the grandmother has had experience. Middle Eastern Jews were thrown out of their own countries and came to their own homeland Israel. They will never give it up because those who they believed were friends regected them and that is why the grandmother says what she said to her granddaughter. It is not hatred when she said that they have no soul just a spark it is actually pain that she suffered. The young Arab girl was actually suffering the same pain because her father was killed by Arabs that is why she was regecting her community and she was looking for acceptance elsewhere. I could be wrong but I do not think so.

What a shocking documentary, I never realized the level of segregation and lack of interaction between the communities, and the amount of miss-information and distrust spread among them. I wonder whether the horrific violence we are witnessing today is an outcome of this clash of ignorance. I also find it very strange that no one in the comment section acknowledged that the grandmother is teaching her child that Arabs don't have souls. How is such discourse allowed in 2023. Religion can be and is very dangerous.

The souls thing was extremely disturbing to me. How is that different to any other form of supremacy and segregation? White colonisers frequently thought the indigenous and black people they colonised did not have souls. While most of the documentary was sweet, the perception of outsiders reminded me of extreme evangelical communities where they only mix with other church people. The stuff about being a princess was weird too.

the two girls lying on the grass- a jewish and an arab girl. they didn t seem segregated at all. i suppose the point of the documentary was to point out the extremes and the one caught in the middle. don t tell me there are no extremes of some sort in the society you live...

‘Feeding fear’ is how we get our kids to learn how to cross the road safely. We tell them that some things might hurt them and we supervise their safety until it is safe for them to do it themselves. We are not in a position to judge the way that Israelis handle the threat of terrorism unless we also have neighbours who are religiously murderous zealots.
