Don't forget when you have a cooking pot either directly in the fire or on a grate on top of the fire, the easiest way for a quick and easy cleanup on the
OUTSIDE of the pot is that you apply bar soap with some water, or else liquid soap (easier) to the bottom of the pot and several inches up the side of the pot. This means that when it gets a lot of soot and Ashes on it from the fire, it will all scrub off very easily because of the soap layer underneath the ashes and soot that cling to the outside of the pot. An old Girl Scout trick!😊
Used to be a brewer , don't use scratchy pads because bacteria will hide in a scratch . Otherwise gotta sanitize with heat . You can do almost with anything with these things
Also, using a large stockpot. Remember the lid. It will heat much faster and save you a lot of fuel if you keep the pot covered.
Also, if you're buying a stockpot, particularly at a restaurant supply, see if they have a perforated basket to fit it You can lower whatever you want to heat into the pot and then easily take it all out in one move. Particularly good if you're blanching or cooking vegetables.
They can also serve as make do refrigeration if you have access to cold water or snow in the winter. You may be able to keep cooked food safely from one meal to the next.
Given the need from your buyout location, ect... how considerable is planning or packing for the item and needed size 🤔
We have a half dozen huge Canning Pots for putting the Jars in when we "Can" our crops. We also have a couple of pressure cookers as well. Our garage is canning central so we don't have to heat up the kitchen and house. We have an old Cookstove that was my Grandmothers. It is one of the old wood burning stoves that was used on the family farm going back to the early 1900's. It still has the old water tank attached to the side of the stove. There is also a large woodstove in the garage that we use for heat in the winter and also to help when canning. If the grid goes down doing things the Old Way will come in handy.
If we had to we could live in the Garage for Warmth & Cooking.
Sounds like you guys won't miss a beat! 👍👍
At first I thought this was stating "you need a large amount of pot"!!! 🤣🤣🤣🥳😅
Also turn it on its side and place a small grill inside to turn the pot into an oven
Great idea!
Not only do you need a large pot, you need an assortment of large pots - preferably some of them being well suited to heating over an extended fire (like a cast iron cauldron).
We have 2 for boiling water, cooking, washing, and cleaning. Can't be prepared with out them used on a wood fire, or propane stove or grill.
dont forget your pot holders -MF DOOM
You could make a trolly with wheels on to move that pot of water, if the ground was flat and paved.
Before filling the pot with other prep items, put a pillowcase inside it so you can keep the items together and empty it quickly without losing things.
Great suggestion, thanks! 😃
I have one, currently used whenever I want to make 60 + burritos all at once for the freezer. 5 to 6 burritos per vacuum bag. All the fixins go in the pot mixed up then spooned out to roll burritos.
I got mine at the thrift store for like $4 - came with the lid.
We have one, and it came in handy during those hot days. We used our outdoor propane stove and that huge pot to blanch all our corn during harvest. We had 300 or more corn on the cob to blanch, and doing that in the house would have heated up the house. It was already hot enough. Also took us less time. I'm glad I have several large pots.
I've used totes and coolers for blanching corn on cob
With a large pot, and a couple of nice size baskets to go inside, a pot that size could do a "pot Hangi" that would feed 6-10 people. Say 2 small chickens in one basket, and vege in the top basket.
Also a set of good, simple stainless steel mixing bowls.
In a pinch You can bake in it too The slide a baking rack into the pot On a camp fire
Those burn marks only tell me you actually use your pot and you have experience with it. One NPC from Kingdoms of Amalur said it best, "Polished armor is unused armor."
Corporals Corner just recently did a video on using it as an oven with a baking cooling rake.
Thanks again. Yup, as a homebrewer I have a 5 gallon, with a lid, sturdy metal pot, just like that.
My grandmother had a 20-gallon pot, to make soup for Christmas dinner, when all 60 people in the family show up! YUM.
I love my soup pot! Use it for soups mostly. You have to buy a good one. Not cheap one.
I have 4 pressure canners, but they also work well as pressure cookers
Using my big pot to can Campbell's Bean and Bacon knock off Soup today. Adding to my Prepper Pantry. Pray, Plant, Prepare.
I have a couple of them and cast iron dutch ovens
You can get 2, equal size, stock pots and make a homemade water purifier. Similar to the Berky brand. Although theirs is probably better! It would be almost as good, and better than nothing!
I have a pot just like that. It is very good at making distilled water. I realized that when I was doing water bath canning.
You can also place this pot under the strong sun to warm up the water for bathing, similar to a solar cooker. The lid is very reflective, it can be used as a mirror.
Excellent suggestions! 😃
Get the best quality you can afford. The thick bottom ones cost more, but cook better and last longer. Bayou Classic stainless steel isn't bad for the money.
Have 2 larger than needed pots, one for food, one for projects.
We have a few of these we use all the time I like the turkey deep fryers because they are large and come with a propane burner for a reasonable price
Oh yes… and gotta LOVE a good fried turkey, absolutely the best way to cook a turkey hands down!!
Joyce equipment on 291 and wade hampton blvd in Greenville SC sells them along with a lot of other things
Mine is a thicker version with a glass lid. I like to can... a lot. I will make 14 quarts of food stuffs, enough for 2 canners worth in my pot. But I have water bath canned in my stock pot. Not a fan of the blue canners. Thank you. God Bless and stay safe.
I have an ex British military issue dixie pot, really heavy duty and been used since Victorian times. The lid can be used for frying and a good carry handle fitted as well.
Where would a person purchase one of these pots? Thank you, in advance! 😃
It would be good to have a few stock pots in various sizes, like Russian dolls.
You also can make it a faraday cage for protecting electronical gear from emp etc. Just cover the inside walls, bottom and lid with cardboard and seal the lid with aluminium adhesive band @ the end. Cheers from GER
Great idea
Good luck with that!
You could put a sleeping bag and tent pegs in that pot to store it away prior to SHTF.
I use 2 of them when EZ camping to wash dishes.
*Cajun cookers have entered the chat*
It can also be used as an oven. Place a piece of rack inside lay on its side over a heat source. Place the lid over the end. Cooking in it will be a matter of vigilance.
We use stock pots for crab boils in the summer. In the fall and winter we have one for making broth and water bath canning.
With large volume the food stays warmer longer. Also can store more pots withing the large pot.
Make sure to label it - “This is not the proverbial pot to pi$$ in”
😂
No that's a chamber pot. Used to have to carry one out everyday as a child from my grandmothers room.
Labeling IS important... 😃🤣🤩
I live in California. I purchased a large stainless pot for cooking tamales about five years ago. The pot came with a removable grate for steaming tamales, veggies, etc. It can also be used sanitize items without actually putting the items in the boiling water. So, check you local stores that sell Mexican food items for deals on a large pot. Also, avoid buying your pot just before the Christmas holiday. I noticed that prices for the pots are high during this period of time.
Cast iron Dutch oven or cast iron jambalaya pot!! Yes they are heavy and I wouldn’t recommend carrying in your back but if you had horses or cattle and pulling a cart or wagon you may keep it in there. “It’s the end times why would you want to have cattle/horse and a wagon??!” Well it keeps everything secure and in one place while moving around. People will most likely end up as nomadic people moving here and everywhere there are resources or protection.
I couldn't agee more. You need to have a big pot even if you bug out. You can cook big game, big fish, purity a lot of water, wash clothes and yourself.
Yeppers, one of the very first things I bought. Great for boiling rainwater, or making soup for our neighborhood. Soup is how they made it through the great depression and made food stretch. Can also be used to catch rainwater.
Now that is an excellent idea! Would not have thought of a big
Pot, and all the uses for it.!
Thanks for the useful info! A big pot of chili sounds really good!
I love my stainless steel pot! Ive used it for cooking soups and stews to can. Ive also made lots of bone broth. Great item to have.
We are heading toward Chili Season! But, its crawfish boil season, right now! Yum! 🦞🦐
I think mine is 16 quarts. Not as heavy gauge stainless as the restaurant pots. But I got it with the last S&H Green Stamps I had, and combined with the stamps my Mom had, there were enough stamps to buy it.
If you pick a lot of poke sallet, the pot is good to cook it down in.
The 10 Box grocery store I go to has stock pots for sale. They stock a lot of stuff for Hispanics.
Most don't know what poke sallet is. Have to boil it several times. Used to buy it in cans. I have poke weed growing in my yard and I use the berries for dye. Awesome post ☺️.
Thx SP.
Great channel.
Plz let ppl know about the actual reduction in GMRS license fees.
A large cooking pot is a good idea. Thank you for all you do Sootch, you're the man!
It would be good for EMP too
😂 luv your bloopers.. and yes, I've kept all of my oven racks thru out the years and have the large exact pot that you show.. 🇺🇲
I picked up some at the dollar store, years ago, for home made wine. Also handy for jarring / canning food!
I got a 12q at a garage sale for $5 a few years back. It's awesome.
Sootch you're a gem. Thanks for all you do.
i would recommend two medium sized cast iron pots WITH THE LIDS for cooking. cast iron though it takes longer to heat up it will keep cooking even after you take it off the fire/stove and put on the other pot (that you've had next to the fire you used for to cook the first pot). the food will taste much better as well. but those of course wouldn't be for toting around the woods if you were on foot but i really couldn't see having a 24 quart container of any kind in my back pack either. just not practical if everyone has their own cookware (and they should). instead of grates green logs or rocks would work or tripod with wire or even rope could work in a pinch. and as for alarm one could use a whistle or even gunshot. as far as transporting water, camelbacks or milk jugs or any other plastic containers would do just fine and there are millions upon millions of those things around and will be for hundreds of years. they would fit in your backpack well enough or one may could tie them together or to a stick and carry it across your shoulder. so anyway i think for morale of the tastebuds i'd stick with cast iron.
When cooler temps approach i make a huge pot of chili, eat some and freeze the rest. I could usually make enough to last all winter.
If you thrift them a complete cook kit could be cobbled together actually using one as the burner and another nested into it to cook in
Cut down a rack to fit sideways inside of the stockpot, lean it on its side in a fire, prop the lid on it and you have a campfire oven.
You can drill some holes around the top and bottom of a stockpot and fit it inside of a larger one, leaving a gap of an inch or two around all sides and bottom and it makes a decent fireplace inside of a primitive shelter. Add a grate on top and it's a stove or grill that burns fairly efficiently instead of just smoldering.
Very grateful for all you share. You truly are a gem. May the Lord bless you and keep your family always ..
Good video, thanks for sharing , God bless !
In the 50s and 60s (up till I got drafted) at the line shacks we used big galvanized tubs and galvanized buckets filled with water all around the wood stoves. not on top or actually over a fire, but up near with a little space. When the water gets hot it helps to heat, and we used the hot water to wash pans, plates and ourselves.
Stock pots are really handy. I have an older one I used to feed my teenagers in. More than once I fed stew, beans, and spaghetti to football players, the wresting team and our girls softball teams. A lot of stories about chief big kettle. My great grandkids still know it well seeing its been past one of my kids after another.
I can see a Chicken Bog coming up! 😎
If you let your stainless steel pot cool natural it won't bend.If you put cold water immediately after cooking it will bent.I quite aluminum pots and pans years ago. They are very convenient but can cause cancer eventually.
I thank you boss and everyone involved with the show/channel, any possibility of different canning supplies, or proper use of Alice gear, ect... keep the great work coming we appreciate it all!!!
I've been watching these videos for couple years now and I just love watching the outtakes at the end. it really makes my day!
To cook and boil water maybe carry something in good luck if u don’t know what a pot is for I’m not sure how u made it this far in life but congrats on however u accomplished that😂😂😂😂😅😂.
Great soup pot 😊👍 Great video Sootch00
Thanks for content found you looking for a surefire..
Multi use pot for sure even doing our laundry. Love the bloopers mate. Cheers from Australia.
Great video. We designed our island in our kitchen around these size pots. There are six cubies on both sides so we have 12 that hold various things. Its quite the discussion starter
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend. Thank you for sharing this informative video. You always do a great job. Please keep your vital information videos coming along. All the best to you and your family. Stay safe. 🤗
As always good point, still on more suggestion at slightly smaller Pot and a Wanderbag or a Ecostoof to save on Fuel.
this works really well, especially for all kind of Stew's
Something not mentioned is that one can sterilize clothes for bandages in a large pot. You couldn't use it for cooking after, but in a situation where you're looking after your community, fresh bandages will become scarce. You can boil old clothes to sterlize it and use it to pack gunshot wounds.
I have a huge family and we use stock pots all the time. If you don't have enough material inside to absorb the heat you will scorch the bottom. This is likely to do if you're browning meat for a larger dish.
A good place to get these at a discount are restaurant supply resellers and it supports local business. I start getting ready 10 years ago and this was one of the first things I got.
Could you consider a video how to keep hydration bladders from leaking, cleaning, ect...?
Shrimp boil!👍😋
I’m in Louisiana. That’s a crawfish/gumbo pot 😊
Are we branching out to the Sootch Can Cook channel?
Survival cooking? Sarah Mac's Chili-mac Channel!?
Washing clothes, cleaning dishes, etc.....
My local Agri Supply carries alot of these large pots.
Not on this particular topic, but if you need anything made from cotton, get it now. The crop failed due to the heat, so prices will go up next year.
Thank you! 😃
LOVE me some boiled peanuts!
Water is 1kg. per liter. Boils at 100 degrees and freezes at 0 degrees.
Stone soup pot!
just heating water for a bath makes it worth having. heck, it would make having 3 or 4 worth having.
Brand suggestions? Thanks.
Watch to the end...it really goes to pot.
If it’s shtf, save bones and cook stock. That’s what I use mine for
Install a hose on top with a weigh on the lid you have a still?
THKS
Instead of direct heat, protect the bottom with a stone over the fire. A might slower, but it saves the bottom.
Find a sieve , basket or colander that can stay near the top for a MacGuyver steamer. Steam rolls while the soup/ stew cooks. Sterilize medi-kits before repacking. I use mine for tamales. I'm not paying $90 for a tamale only pot.
A few fittings in the lid, some copper tubing with a little weight you can not just boil water, but distill it. For when you need sterile water for little ones or wound cleaning.
And aluminum, pots and pans might make you crazy... maybe. Its associated with Alzheimer's There are studies going both ways, like every study ever done on anything.
Get 1 for SP1 to scare the bears away
I wonder why he didn't buy a big thick watch and went with the little thin one instead. 😀
How to buy and use your pot
I cook Corned beef and Cabbage in my pot like that.
