    I think I'm on my third listen to this book and it gets better every time. A brilliant summary of things by William Philpott.

    "The pioneers of a warless world are the young men and women who refuse military service. Those who joyfully march to music in rank and file have already earned my contempt. They have been given a large brain by mistake, since for them the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." -Albert Einstein

      I like this audiobook, but I do agree. Seems as though it’s a very long, but not in depth, essay arguing that WWI was a war of attrition. There likely is a high level of attrition amongst readers of the book. 😂 😇 I stuck around for the whole thing. Interesting argument I guess, but I’m not sure the author makes his point very well.

    A not particularly unbiased account of WW1 as seen through British eyes. The fact is the Germans out classed & out fought Britain to the end. It was starvation & lack of war materials that led to the armistice. Kitchener & Haig were little more than dim, confused public school boys.

    I had just read someplace that the Maxim machine gun is the weapon responsible for the most kills deaths for the entire war and including the whole 20th Century??? The number 1 killer. I did not verify yet but it makes sense. Ww1 machine guns were used widely in ww2 especially early in the war Mr maxim and his gun.

    • @dmac6312
      @dmac6312 Před rokem +2

      Hard to believe this. Machine guns are effective against infantry only when infantry is exposed, either on the attack or otherwise out of cover. Artillery on the other hand is effective against entrenched infantry (suppression fire), strongpoints and exposed infantry as well as pretty much any infantry based weaponry such as tanks, trucks and enemy artillery (counter battery fire). In addition, artillery can strike the enemy at great distance whereas machine guns are ineffective at distances above say three or four hundred metres. My vote goes to artillery as the number 1 killer.
