I do like the choice in rock formation and colors, although I do mine a bit different. Those colors are very expensive. At Walmart or other retailers, you can get same kind of paint for only 99 cents. I use a light grey first, then burnt umber and followed with a very diluted black. I get many comments on how I got rocks on my layout and they are blown away when I say they're not real.

Think you were supposed to seal the first colours with sprayed on scenic cement before putting the black on. That would have made the black just run into the cracks.
I've been watching your videos. I'm really impressed. It's very hard to believe your claim that you're just learning as you go. The results are so good. Surely with something like the rock painting you must have experimented off screen until you came up with this method? Or do you do what we all do and gather ideas from others? There is so much to learn in modelling Trains and i do watch a lot on youtube to give me idea's, just like this video i watch one from woodland scenic's and i did paint one rock to see how i went with it but you don't get the results from one rock cheers Robert
Looks great Robert! If my memory serves correct, I read somewhere that you need to seal the pigments otherwise they will fade. Are you just using white glue and water to do this? Thanks for sharing. Ethan
I've been using wall joint compound to do what you've done, but the paint seems to be absorbed differently between the plaster casted rocks and the wall joint compound. Plaster absorbs paint differently (better) than wall joint compound. It ended up looking vary fake around the rocks. How did you get your painting to look so even between the plaster and WJC?
Michael you are right the plaster absorbs differently to WJC and you can see the difference between the both but i took this as being an effect for the rocks and after you put some ground cover on this it will take most of it away, i tried using plaster of paris at the start but this was drying to fast this is why i went with the WJC hope this helps cheers Robert
Your rocks look really great. Do you use woodland molds or have you made the molds yourself / or another brand? I have only experimented slightly With colors at the time, but I can say that you should try on a seperate piece adding some colors (washes) and try several coats With black Wash. Let it dry and take a picture between each coat so you can look at the different collor effects after. Then you can decide if you are happy With the collors on Your layout without the danger of "over dooing it" first. I thought I had screwed up on my trial piece With to strong collors but after two 1:10 black washes and one 1:5 black Wash it turned out much bettter than i thought possible. ( I had a light grey base before any washes) I would imagine Scenic cement is the last thing to go on top but this of coarse Depends on what result you look for. I`m experementing With different Methods and materials for rock scenery on a diorama to prepare for a layout but I have not used plaster yet so I didn`t know it would Wash off again. Have you tried to make rock mouldings with plaster cloth, or is the only good way to fill the moulds With plaster or plaster of paris? JC
speedfreak1983 JC i haven't used plaster cloth as rock moulding but this would work depending on how you would do it, i have seen people scrunch up paper and lay the plaster cloth over and this seems to work and look ok as well. maybe you should try a piece out and see how it turns out cheers Robert
***** I will have to order some moulds first, but it might save a bit of Money and weight if it is possible to get a Nice molding without filling the mold entirely with plaster as there goes a lot of plaster making the molding flat on the backside. Where I live 1Kg of plaster is about 6$ and you get 984x6 inches with plastercloth for about 20$.Thats why the question:) By the look of the shapes U made I think the moulds themseves will be well wourth the Investment! speedfreak1983 JC i had about 4 different moulds some small and some big, when filling the moulds you don't have to fill to the top you may fill them half way so you don't get a big mould or even half the mould so there not as long and your plaster is cheaper than i can get as well cheers Robert
Bob 16 to one, i put the paint in a cup and then multiply the amount 16 times in the same cup, but if you need it darker at less water hope that helps cheers

No straight on the raw plaster, but i did seal this at the end with a mix of PVA Glue and water cheers Robert
