60 years ago all those barren rocks underwater were covered with Kelp and other seaweeds. Abalone and many other shellfish, rock crabs and sea urchins were abundant, now all gone. Runoff rain water from the booming housing has depleted severely. The reef is connected to the shore north of the jetty by a rocky bottom, this also was covered by kelp and all kinds of sealife native to the area. As a child with "goggles" (mask) no snorkel these underwater gardens were a scary alien world.
