Black 4.0 Review - Is It REALLY Blackest Paint in The Universe?

- Today I'm going to test out some Black 4.0 Acrylic Paint - created by Stuart Semple at Culture Hustle. Is it really the blackest paint ever, or is it a gimmick? Join me for some "unscientific studies" to see if we can answer that question! And yes this is just a bit of fun; there is no way I can truly measure just how black the paint is, or know if it's the blackest substance in the known universe, so we'll just have to rely on our eyes for this one, lol!

When I need to paint something black I use Liquitex Black Gesso. It is a nice matte black. I find two coats makes a wonderful surface to paint on.
I don't think I've tried that one, I'll look out for it at the shops! 😊
I very much enjoyed this (and the whole vantablack revenge-paint saga!)
Thank you! The Vantablack story is pretty funny. That's been going on for years now. 😂
That was fun to watch!! I will not be buying that paint in my life time there's no way I can justify that kind of £££ on it, but it was awesome to watch you experiment with it and the items turned out super lovely! :D
I am glad I got to try a sample bottle out - it was free with any order, though the shipping cost negated that so I don't think I'd be able to afford buying more when it costs so much to send to Australia. It was fun to test though! ❤
It looked great to watch, but I agree not worth the price!
Glad to see you try this out so I don't waste my money on it! It looks the same as Black 3.0 in my opinion, but then I haven't seen them compared together besides the Culture Hustle website.. Now we need to compare it to other matte blacks and see how black it truly is in a "fair" comparison 🤔 Or a matte varnish over the Monte Marte and see how they compare then 😆
Yes it would be good to try some other matte paints etc to get a better idea of them all side by side. 😊
There is an IPA called "everyone can drink this except Anish Kapoor" now supposedly. He is also banned from using the world's pinkest pink
He's banned from using all of their products, I think!
I had the first version of this when it was just called Blackest Black. Like you I mostly used it for crafty things. It never found it's way into my artwork. Diluting it with water improves how kt behaves, but that's true for all acrylics apart from fluid paints. You're very determined to cover so much surface area without diluting the paint!
I didn't want to mess it up by adding too much water - I've done that before with acrylic paint! 😂
@@BeckyTregear I use a fine mist/spray bottle and spray the canvas whenever I feel like the paint is drying too fast. I Iearned that tip from Lachri Fine Art here on CZcams many, many years ago and it made acrylic paint more enjoyable for me.
Oh Wow! That's quite a difference between the two. Now you need to paint dainty white dandelions blowing in the wind on the black panels.
Cute idea! 😊
I love Stuart, and I'm obsessed with his dedication to community. The drama behind this paint is hilarious. It's inspiring how he transformed a petty moral dispute into an on going pop art project.
This paint however...meh. Anish can have it, but that's obviously not the point. It's a social experiment and the ultimate trolling. There are blacker blacks. Cheap Rust-Oleum spray is blacker.
It would have been interesting for us to see how 4.0 is diluted with water to make it more fluid !!
In fact this is the main question I ask regarding this painting !
I'm daft and didn't think of that until muuuuuch later! 😂
I was trait prepared to not like the Black 4.0, but after seeing your results, I really DO like it! Impressive!
The egg turned out the best; it looks really cool on my ornament shelf!
I enjoyed your review. Your excitement is fun to watch 💙
Thank you! 😊
I think Super Rae mentioned in her video that this paint has a very short life on it. That might explain it having a very different consistency. I've contemplated buying it before, but didn't because of her comment. It was mostly because I would have bought the larger bottles, hoping to use it over a long period and larger bottles are cheaper.
Question for you. You did joke you don't have any scientific equipment to measure light, but I was thinking your camera can do that. Did you look at the two paints in Photoshop to see the difference with the curve?
Did you have much left after these tests? Does it go far? I still want this and the unicorn paints.
It's hard to say really as to the consistency - the paint is maybe a few months old by the time I received it? 4.0 was released sometime last year. As for measuring light....that sounds entirely too complicated for Saturday morning! 😂 I'm guessing I have about half the bottle left - I want to finish it up quickly before it goes manky.
This look amazing, I love it ☺☺
The egg was my favourite item - I think I'll be keeping it completely black because it looks great as a display piece!
Great video. 🎉. I’m glad you bought that paint so I don’t have to. 😂. I am sure plain old black paint is good enough for me. 🎉
My curiosity is also satisfied! The paint costs too much to buy more and have it shipped to Australia. 😭
For best results you can dilute it as you said, but it also works best with an air brush. Spreads much more evenly and really gives it that empty void blacker than black vibe that most people desire when thinking about purchasing this paint.
I didn't think of using an airbrush! 🙈
glad it has warmed up for you .we had -2 c lastnight and 4c durring the day at this time . however crazy rain and wind is due over sunday and monday . your black paint test is very cool and rocks my world xxxxx I want Black bedroom as we have heavy dark blue curtins .......it is a nasty cream color and lets way too much sunlight in . Thanks for sharing xxx
This paint would make a very black bedroom, haha! Would cost a fortune too.....🙈
@@BeckyTregear hahahahaha 1 millon bottles hahahahah 🥰🤣😂
Would be interesting to see how it compares to Golden SO FLAT acrylics. I was so surprised how flat/opaque they were when I tried them out first.
I need to get some of their black to try; I've heard good things, and really anything by Golden seems to be great!
I love your reviews because they are honest and kind. Much appreciated! Does the black 4.0 have much of an odor or is it similar to other acrylic paints with minimal to no smell?
I just had to go and smell it! 😂 Very minimal odor, which is great because I hate it when products have a strong or nasty smell. So there's another win!
It goes on shiny plastic well, once it's prepped with a bit of a sanding. It'd be interesting to see this colour applied via flocking.
That's cool to know about the plastic, thank you!
so, the blackest black is just a matte black? 🤔 what if you mixed the Mont Marte paint with a matte medium? would it be more like the blackest black paint?
As far as I can tell....yes, it is because it's super matte. I'd be curious to try maybe Golden matte acrylic up against it, in black of course. 😆
I bet you could just do a matte varnish spray over top of the strait black paint and knock that shine back all the way with no hassle! @@BeckyTregear
@@BeckyTregear And Holbein Acryla gouache in black might be interesting.
It looks like a blackboard! The 4.0 I mean! Try draw ing on it with chalk!
I'm sure it would work like a blackboard....though it's a bit too expensive for that really, haha!
the worrisome part for me is the lightfastness, or how well it stands up to time. If you sell an artwork, how will it look in 5, 10, or 20 years? it matters and there is little information on it. It's what has kept me from purchasing it. I love the idea...hope to have info on it soon.
Lightfastness information is always so hit and miss - the only way to know is to do self-tests by hanging things in windows with direct sunlight for a year or so. The downside is that if I did this with every paint I have, there would be no more windows, lol! 😂
Action Lab did a video about Vanta black. His experiment was even more impressive. He painted a whole room black and no light was reflecting off the walls. It was as if he was standing inside a black hole.
That would be so cool to see!
Thank you for sharing! It was a blast to watch, but i doubt i would buy any 4.0 black ⚫️ paint.
It's too expensive for me to buy more! 😱
Hi Beky, thanks for the video. What solvent does this black use?
Do we know if is can be used with an airbrush? If yes, that might help spread it more evenly.
It can be thinned a bit with water I think - I should have tried that! I'm pretty sure I've seen videos of this black being used in airbrushes - maybe check with Culture Hustle for more information on that? Hopefully they can answer the question definitively.
Oh I have heard of this paint before lol. I think having a very matte black would be useful in many situations, but the consistency of 4.0 seems difficult to work with! I also like the egg😂🥚 I think maybe this paint could be useful for DIY Halloween decor?
It would be awesome for Halloween!! 😆
I feel like this recipe needs work. Also, why so many ingredients? I like the matte quality, but it is so hard to spread, dries too quickly to use easily, and shows every imperfection. Maybe it works for miniatures? And then the price. I guess you buy it so we don’t have to!😂
I think miniatures would be the best solution - I've got some so this is a good idea for how to finish the bottle, lol.
I’ve been curious about the blackest black. But thats because i want an eyeliner that black and matte.
Likely best not to put this one on your eyelids - it washes off too easily for one thing! 🤣
I suggest Haus of Gaga! They make an amazing black eyeliner!! It's expensive, but it lasts forever because you don't need multiple coats.
I see a red door
And I want it painted black
(The Rolling Stones)
Third!
Is it acrylic paint supposedly? I mean, black is black to me! I wouldn't want to waste the ££££s
Yes, it's acrylic. It was designed to rival Vantablack, which only one artist is allowed to use (that's the whole saga, lol).
Here In the US the paint is 50😅
If I want something mostly black I just draw it on a surface that is already black and then you don't need as much. Don't tend to draw on pure white surfaces as much. If I see black paper sketchbooks I buy a bunch of them even if they are not meant to be a bulk pack.
First!
Yay!

@@awatercolouristhello! 👋😀
Should do another video. This was interesting. Do another video with it and mix it for one four parts water one part paint let’s see what happens.
I have a little bit left; not sure if it's still usable but I was thinking of using the rest for another project soon.
Is it MATTE or FLAT
Flat matte? 😂
