I swear to god, I've used the exercises from your previous three tutorials on hand techniques, faster double bass and blast from a couple of years back, and was hoping that maybe there would be a skank beat tutorial. And whaddya know, it comes out today. Holy shit man you are a fucking legend!
The classic "metal(but also used in a lot of old blink etc....)skank beat" has always been one of my favorite beats. And I'm now learning drums. I am EXTREMELY EXCITED to find this video good sir(s)!
I came here cause someone on reddit mentioned thrash metal using a skank beat. Never heard that term before. But bruh turns out I loved D-beat this whole time
These beats are really, I mean really simple in a technical way. The hardest point of these beats are stability and duration of your physical capability so it might be tricky to keep in beats if you didn't practice in metronome
Hey Eugene, just wanted to say awesome video (very informative and hilarious) and thanks for all your tutorials. They have been very helpful for me. And also thank you again so much for signing my sticks on your tour with vital remains. Greetings from panama.
love your tutos man they're quite funny and I learn a ton. I totally agree there are no secrets to reach the level you want, only hard practise every day will make it happen, but it's great to start with the right techniques and habits from the beginning. so a big thank you Eugene!
Holy mother thank you so much for this lesson! I struggled so hard with wrist pain caused by not using a correct technique and I couldn't dind anywhere on youtube videos about the skank beat. Thanks!!
Dude, thank you so much for this! The mysticism is over! Before, there were no videos about these things. Drummers had to somehow learn from records or from finding out some drummer's "secrets". :) But times change and this knowledge is available to anyone now and this will ensure that a lot of good music will be created. :) Keep it up!
The snare issue you mentioned is what made this difficult for me. I'm not a drummer, but I basically always have a kit at my house and have always played for fun. It was super frustrating because I've listened to/been in almost exclusively hardcore bands since I was a teenager. Obviously, this beat is what the entire genre revolves around. So, it was super annoying that I'd heard it SO much and still couldn't play it. At least, couldn't play it consistently. Once I figured that issue out, the rest just came with time.
Thanks the gods that I found this video. My band and I wrote a new song called Frozen Exile, and in it I play I four measures of blast beats (while keeping time on a cymbal), then I change to the "Slayer" beat/Skank beat, then back to blast beat then back to skank best. This video helped me realize that there were somethings that I need to clean up a bit. Thank you so much for the helpful video!
This is awesome/hilarious. I would think it would be easier to learn a d-beat with the right hand following the kick since that's "normal" and then go to skanks from there! Although I guess if you're doing just alternating 8ths to start that's a great place too :)
I agree on the d-beat part. That topic will be explored further in the "advanced" part of the skank beat tutorial that I will hopefully upload in a month or so.
kids these days dont' know how good they have it. Literally the only time I could get drumming information was to watch Saturday Night Live or get lucky with seeing a band playing on a different late night show.
This was really helpful (and hilarious). I struggle all the time playing skank beats and this video will always remind me to slow down first before reaching lombardo level hahaha...just kidding. thanks!
Hey Eugene! Great vids :) Just a question. I see you use Axis pedals and I was just wondering, have you ever broken a pair or seen anyone break some? Cheers!
Eugene Ryabchenko I'm not actually too sure because I've never owned a pair before. I've just heard from people on forums that the drive shaft can slip after a fair bit of usage and some of the nuts can break. I'm currently looking for a double pedal to purchase and I would like to know which ones are more durable cos im broke and I dont really want to have to buy another pair after like 5 years. cheers :)
Happy to see another tutorial! Just hoping i dont watch it too often so i start picking up your accent again, it pisses off the wife something aweful :) A question though, wich Axis pedals are you using atm? atm im using the DW Direct Drive Double Pedal but it does'nt realy suit me and i was thinking about investing in a new one.
Ah sorry man i should have looked more closely, thanks! I got my Axis signature Alfred Berengena yesterday and ive been working on my foot blisters ever since hahaha :D
Hello Eugene. Can I translate your lessons in this channel and repost them somewhere else?(a place can't reach youtube) I would leave some links and information about you and your channel.
Hi Eugene, I was wondering if I can get sheets of the exercises from your double bass and polyrhythm tutorial videos? Your tutorials are amazing, they helped me improved alot.
I can do the metal kick pattern with one foot or with two, but not the d beat, nor the simplified beat! I can get it if I concentrate a lot in my foot, but very poorly lol
What is that Pad/E-Drum Snare your brother is playing? Is that part of a larger set? Also: What is that Metronome you're using? Is the sound we hear in these videos the exact same you hear while playing? Because I like this click a lot more than the one I got.
That is a: Roland RMP-5 (snare) Roland KD-8 (kick) Roland CY-8 (cymbal) The click I am using was given to me by a good friend of mine from a studio. I don't use that click sample during playing.
Hey, thanks a lot for the answer. Since I can't afford a full E-drum kit I, thought this would be a good alternative. Especially since, if you've only got snare, HiHat and bass, you're not distracted by anything else. If I may ask about the click one more time, can you recommend a particular metronome? Brand doesn't matter. I got myself a Tama Rhythm watch for the features, then realized it had the most annoying click I had ever heard.
I accidently go from metal kick pattern up beat to down beat all the time. Cant hold the steady up beat without flippin it around. Hate it! Doesnt sound bad per say but I dont wanna flip it!!
Thanks for this question. I had the PST7 19 inch Crash and I played around 40 shows before I got a crack on the edge (not counting countless hours of practice, merciless transportation in buses, trains, airplanes). It survived for around 6 months.
Another great video Eugene. I really enjoyed it. I use the whipping motion for everything, hi-hat or ride cymbal but I never played music much faster than 245bpm. czcams.com/video/8PR16DNFEBo/video.html Hitting the hi-hat with the tip of the stick and not the shank just sounds thin.

I gotta admit, I really like the way to present your stuff in your videos. It's like school, but fun and interesting :D
So school was not fun and interesting for you? :D
Eugene Ryabchenko, not like this, no. :D
Eugene: Were you rushing or dragging?
Peter: Dragging?
Eugene: PLAY AGAIN!
**hits his brother's head like a cowbell**
Needs more cowbell.
Timothy McKane OMG YES!
That Whiplash reference haha

Thanks Eugene! Now I know how to play every thrash metal song ever!
These beats are really, I mean really simple in a technical way. The hardest point of these beats are stability and duration of your physical capability so it might be tricky to keep in beats if you didn't practice in metronome
That whiplash part was damn funny!!😂😂 ok overall awesome video👌👌👌💪💪👍👍👍

Cripplet cymbals ahahah best part !
Lots of Love from India!
Man, You've got the best Drumming tutorials on CZcams!
I've learned so much from you. Thank you. :)
Holy mother thank you so much for this lesson! I struggled so hard with wrist pain caused by not using a correct technique and I couldn't dind anywhere on youtube videos about the skank beat. Thanks!!
You are always welcome ;)

That intro is so awesome! :D
SubjectZero That's exactly what I thought. Awesomeness 😉

dude your tutorials helped me so much with speed thanks man
Lol. I’ve learned a lot watching your tutorials. Thanks. Also, I like that you added some humor.
kids these days dont' know how good they have it. Literally the only time I could get drumming information was to watch Saturday Night Live or get lucky with seeing a band playing on a different late night show.
Master Eugene !! Great work bro ! Congrats.
man your tutorial videos are just amazing, thank you very much!!
WHAT THE!!?!?!
Eugene has gone from a single bass and pearl pedals to double bass and axis..!!
Setup looks great
Hey, man! Your video and lesson is amazing. Thank you very much for the tricks. Hugs from Brazil ;)
Master Eugene! Thanks! Is a great lesson for me!
I like that parrot movement at the hand whipping demonstration
Fantastic as usual, man. Cheers!
The "potential problems" section was an excellent addition.
thanks!!
Well done and really useful.. Thanks!
Топ 👍
Пожалуй лучшие уроки по сканк битам которые можно найти на ютубе
Awesome video! I remember doing the cripplet cymbals when I got into skank beats xD
Probably most of us went through this :)
yeah right :D
You're brother's already over Lars' level
The perfect teacher :-)
always a good explanation!
Were you rushing or dragging?! :DDDD Whiplash is a legend
спасибо Евгений и второй парень,удостоверился что все делаю правильно.
Второй парень это мой брат Петя. Всегда пожалуйста.
I like when lars does a skank beat with a couple quiet bass strokes and one accented
Great brother
Nicely assembled content. Thanks dude
Lookin good eugene!
that reference tho
which one?
whiplash
Of course.
Cheers!
By breaking a pair, what part exactly do you refer to?
Eugene Ryabchenko I'm not actually too sure because I've never owned a pair before. I've just heard from people on forums that the drive shaft can slip after a fair bit of usage and some of the nuts can break. I'm currently looking for a double pedal to purchase and I would like to know which ones are more durable cos im broke and I dont really want to have to buy another pair after like 5 years. cheers :)
Thanks, Blippi!
The Whiplash Reference, amazing
I was just looking for an excuse to beat the shit out of my brother.
8:04 i died hahaha
amazing
After watching this for a min all I've got is a massive headache. Thanks a lot.
You're welcome
Awesome
My favorite is the metal pattern and the d beat
Happy to see another tutorial! Just hoping i dont watch it too often so i start picking up your accent again, it pisses off the wife something aweful :)
A question though, wich Axis pedals are you using atm? atm im using the DW Direct Drive Double Pedal but it does'nt realy suit me and i was thinking about investing in a new one.
I got the info in the description of my video.
It's a Axis A21 Sabre double pedal with e-kits and microtune spring tensioners.
Ah sorry man i should have looked more closely, thanks! I got my Axis signature Alfred Berengena yesterday and ive been working on my foot blisters ever since hahaha :D
Great!
Dirk Verbeuren plays the hi-hat with fingers in his blasts and skanks, seems weird to me but if it works for him
it's normal. When i play songs in for example 220 and i want to play 16'th notes on hh i play it with my fingers. Look at old belphegor drummer.
jajaja eres lo maximo brother me encanta tu canal
Gotta love the Whiplash reference
I am I guitarist but I can understand a lot I it's so satisfaction to wacht
thank you!

Eugene Ryabchenko is the new Terrence Fletcher guys
Indeed I am.

3:54 is one of my favorites
Ахрененный и интересный туториал! а от куда название D beat?
Насколько мне известно - от группы Discharge.
Discharge beat.
at 1:37, shouldn't the grace notes be uncrossed?
What if I play the cymbals with my left hand and play the snare on my right?
How do you get your kick to sound like that?
D-beat is the best.
This a great tutorial for anyone! Btw, what's the bad thing about playing on the surface of the hi hat? Not offended or angry, just curious.
It is music - there are no bad things in art.
Отлично. Познавательно, понятно и доступно. Жень, а можешь скинуть все те вариации что ты играл в качестве примера в нотах?
Все есть у меня на компе. Напиши мне в личку - скину.
Ок, благодарю. Отписал на почту
Hei Eugene, noe you are using the VDL in the lowest position? It's more confortable to play fast?
I accidently go from metal kick pattern up beat to down beat all the time. Cant hold the steady up beat without flippin it around. Hate it! Doesnt sound bad per say but I dont wanna flip it!!
Hey Eugene, I'm interested in the PST7s as more of a gigging/beater cymbal set. How is the durability/sound, specifically the crashes, in metal music?
Thanks for this question. I had the PST7 19 inch Crash and I played around 40 shows before I got a crack on the edge (not counting countless hours of practice, merciless transportation in buses, trains, airplanes). It survived for around 6 months.
Can anybody compare the Tama speed cobra to axis direct drive pedals
simlified d beat or the lars beat
9:57 Was that a Whiplash reference or what?
it was indeed.
Dude, what kind of toes are are "8th Ntoes" (Cymbal, at 1:14 Min) ;)
traditional names: snare tuka-tuka and the bass drum tuka-tuka
Nabil Karsheh great gentle art of making enemies cover bra. Coincidentally found ya here
thanks man
2:32 is Sodom - Ausgebombt drumbeat
Tell something about righthand hi-hat technic?
What would you like to know?
how to use the fingers an wrist/arm.Thanks
is the first example blast beat ? it seems to me
a traditional blast is alternating single stroke rolls between a snare and kick. So yes. Of course.
I got it. thanks a lot
Have you already uploaded Part 2?
Nope. It will be probably uploaded next month.
It is not even edited yet.
Another great video Eugene. I really enjoyed it.
I use the whipping motion for everything, hi-hat or ride cymbal but I never played music much faster than 245bpm.

Hitting the hi-hat with the tip of the stick and not the shank just sounds thin.
Share pdf sheet please
If you want the pdf - please message me by email or on facebook so I can sent it over.
2:02 *suddenly grows yellow and black braids*
Polka
matt greiner likes this
What makes you think so?
4th note on the down beat...how I hate that!!!!
You don't like finger playing on hi hats, but you gotta wear that outfit.
I don't see how these two things are connected.
Вначале варианты сканка повторяются 2 раза, кажись ты забыл убрать старый кусок :)))
Гор Топор какие секунды?
Eugene Ryabchenko 1:20 - 2:40 первый кусок, потом повторяются басс драм вариэйшн
но во втором куске уже есть бочка триолями
1:20 и 2:40 совсем разные рисунки, ты что-то путаешь.
Well what the fuck is fight fire with fire then
Who else got confused when he said 4th notes instead of quarter notes?
Your brother is decent for not playing drums at all
he is
Жень а для чего нужен Сканк ?
LOL
Skank beats? Is that what you whipper-snappers call 'em these days? Lol. I've never really heard that term.
So skanky!!
Lol! But, c'mon, really? Hilarious!
