Wow, just stumbled upon you. Perfectly crafted vid. As a Purley boy, I used to walk from the Brighton Road to Pampisford Road every school day to South Croydon Technical School, later became Haling Manor High. Met my wife in 1975 in the Earl of Eldon, still married and now retired to Italy. Thanks for the memories.

Another great video, Phil. We lived for a couple years on Sanderstead Road, in the house on the other side of the railway line from South Croydon Rec. It was called Ivy Lodge in those days. There was a small car dealership right across the street, that I see from Google Street View is now an apartment building. A vivid memory was the occasional loud bang when a truck went under the railway bridge, and hit the underside of the bridge with its roof... you can see the scrape marks on Street View... lol.

Hello. New subscriber.. My husband (English) and I use to live in South Croydon 10 years ago above Richer Sounds.. I appreciate how much time you've placed in this video with the added history. We have moved back to San Diego (where I'm from) but will be back to visit next month. We will definitely stop by Cockney's. St. Peter's church, George Gilbert Scott, also worked on St Pancras railway station among other builds. We would walk through the cemetery to get to our station, so I was able to appreciate this church though I'm not a religious person. It's a beautiful build. Thank you for the lovely tour. It felt good to see our previous stomping grounds. Big love from San Diego, California. 💕🌴🌮🏄‍♂️

Used to live in Croydon. It hasn't changed much. Some good walks around there. Walked from South Croydon to Brighton some years ago - South Croydon to Redhill, Redhill to East Grinstead - East Grinstead to Haywards Heath - Haywards Heath to Brighton. Also walked to Hastings the following year. Also done some walks from East Croydon to Oxted.

Phil, a Ha-Ha is more than garden wall. It had a really important and practical purpose. People who owned large houses wanted the imensity of their grounds to be visible from their home. However, these grounds were usually part of the wider estate which needed to be both managed as gardens and also managed as an economic unit. The Ha-Ha was purposely sited to provide a barrier to sheep and other animals which were given free rein in the wider estate but prevented them from entering the close garden, where the flowers and other prettily planted things were planted. It will have been sited specifically in a manner so that when viewed from the house the line of the lawns etc. will have been unbroken - the Ha-Ha was purposely invisible from the house. It would therefore have been a shame had you been able to see it as you approached it from the side where the house used to stand!
You might have mentioned that the Whitgift School was built in the 1930s. You might then have noticed that in the grounds since the 1980s is a care home for the elderly replacing the old Whitgift Alms houses. It has in other words, taken over the full functions of the whole site built in 1596 of the Hospital of the Holy Trinity and school-house on the corner of George St and North End.
The site of the school formed a part of the principal estate of the man who was actually in charge of the Royal Naval fleet to combat the Armada. The Earl of Nottingham (hence the name of the road) was the Lord of the Manor of Haling, and whose house once stood here. As Lord High Admiral to Elizabeth I he was a man of some distinction. The school badge of the now defunct Haling Manor School was the armorial bearing of Lord Nottingham.
Your walk today had another link with North End and central Croydon generally. The Cattle Market was the destination of the flock of sheep, one o whom famously jumped through one of the plate glass windows of Allders in, I think, 1908 (perhaps 1909). The wholesale meat market that operated out of the Church Street and Surrey Street (Shambles) area included several abbatoirs. The sights and smells of that area will have changed over the years. The animals were driven to the market and some were driven back to slaughter.
St. Peter's was the second daughter church of Croydon Parish church. originally this was all part of the old Croydon parish and manor of Croydon. I think that building will have been a school. The Swan and Sugar Loaf and the Red Deer were the junctions of many bus routes even before there was a London Transport. My own great grandfather worked for one of those bus companies in the 1880s, the wonderfully named Balls Brothers Omnibus Company.

Just up the road from Whitgift school is Denning Avenue. The strange thing about Denning Avenue is that the odd number houses start at 9 and the even numbered houses start at 12.

@@philswallow If the missing houses were bombed during WWII I could understand it but the property numbers don't add up. The missing numbers would be ending with 13 on the odd side and 14 on the even side.
Its just like they decided to give the houses these numbers to confuse people in the future.

There was a tobacconist and confectionery on the corner of The Brighton Road and St Augustine's Avenue called the Dainty. I can see in my mind, clearly, the faces of the two ladies who worked in there and, although not quite so much, the gentleman who I'm sure wore a white coat. My cousins and I were often in there. We encountered a strange man in the park one day. He ended up flashing at us in the ally way that runs parallel to Pampisford Road. We turned and ran, laughing our heads off. I had flip flops on. I don't think we even told anyone! Ah, the good old days 😄
