This is the start of a series of videos to help you, get out fishing, on your own.
Jimmy Willis will be getting you started in all the most popular styles of fishing: whip, float, feeder, carp, sea and game. As this series of videos progress, there will also be some more advanced techniques introduced and information on how to target individual species.
In each video, we will be using an Angling Trust qualified coach to demonstrate how to use the equipment and how to set it up. In this episode, we have, Dean Asplin.

You will need a rod fishing licence from the Environment Agency to fish for freshwater fish in England (except the River Tweed), Wales and the Border Esk region of Scotland. You can purchase one here: www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/b...
Licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free, but you’ll still need to get one.
You must always carry your rod fishing licence when you’re fishing or you could be prosecuted.
Whenever you leave the water, remember to Check Clean Dry!
Check your gear after leaving the water for mud, aquatic animals or plant material. Remove anything you find and leave it at the site.
Clean everything thoroughly as soon as you can, paying attention to nets, waders, and areas that are damp and hard to access. Use hot water if possible.
Dry everything for as long as possible before using elsewhere as some invasive plants and animals can survive for two weeks in damp conditions.

Getting back into fishing as I fished with my Dad, when I was young and caught virtually nothing the Rivers were filthy in those days. Started again with a school friend cycled and used a plastic sheet to cover from the rain and loved it, but started Saturday work around 14/15 it has almost impossible to find the time since. Introduced both Daughters and Grandchildren to fishing and they loved it. Still working now at 60 but know I need to make the time.

Great video and the whip set up deal is amazing. I used to fish lakes, river and sea a lot in my youth both on my own and with my dad. My 9yr old son has now expressed great interest in starting fishing after having a go at a lake while on holiday last year, maybe catching a 6lb carp on loan equipment helped 😁

This was brilliant!!! My daughter is 8 years old and has really got into fishing programmes and has started showing in interest in learning how to fish 🎣. I’ve fished twice in my life so I really don’t know what to do! But I’m very keen to share this activity with her and learn as we go together. This video was really helpful and I will definitely be watching more. Thanks so much! :)
One item that all beginner fishing videos miss out is how to handle fish - preferably with wetted hands , and do not grip the fish hard , point - point the vulnerable parts -ie the gill filaments , and position of the vital organs . Warm weather - don't use a keepnet as water temperature in margins may be too high - tight lines to all anglers - oh - forgot , if any new to angling don't like the idea of maggots , then you could explain about bread /wheat/sweetcorn as alternatives to wriggly thingies .

The reason Iam getting back into is because I want to improve my whip fishing
I purchased this kit from AD when I visited the UK from US. Did mighty damage to the bluegills and shellcrackers back home.
This has been a great video - we are going fishing for the first time and this has helped us out enormously. A shout out to Yately Angling Centre who have been great and set us up with a whip and all the other bits we need.
Just about to start my two kids off fishing as I did it 20+ years ago and never even knew about whips. Great idea and nice a cheap, just incase they don't take to it. Time to dust off my old gear

Great video, clear & concise. My 7 year old daughter is asking to go fishing. Will we need a rod licence? Gov website says no, but if I'm with her will they expect me to to have a licence?
To be clear we would have one rod between us, and she would be fishing (though I'd probably have to help her!)

How do you reduce length of rig to allow you to bring fish in to hand ?
Hi Guys
I've fished for years as a kid had a great buildup of gear which unfortunately was robbed how ever I've started to build back up and do my best to fix older stuff I had. My neighbour loaned me a 6m fix line whip telescopic. Just can't afford to replace my pole😂😅 how ever I'm like a child with it I've never used one and am genuinely struggling to land fish. How do I feed it back should I be collapsing it as I'm bringing them in. Should I generally avoid bigger fish.... Thanks in advance

Is there a reason why I only ever hear about fishing whips from British folk? I can't even find a place to buy a whip where I live in the US. Even searching Amazon for "fishing whip" brings me zero results. I know this sound silly but, does whip fishing not work over here or something?

Fishing has many benefits for your physical and mental health. Fishing requires lots of focus and awareness and this takes your mind off internal conflict and stress, similar to meditation. As a result, it helps to reduce anxiety, fight off depression, and promote relaxation.
I know it does me a lot of good after a stressful week.
