    BTW... benn watching your old videos. Just can't help myself. Like visiting an old friend, Just watched onie from 1 year ago "What I do dailey in my garden"... you are in the back yard with all the goergeous hydrangeas, the geraniums, the veronica and the iconic potagea. Oh, makes me so nostalgic. Can't wait to see this new backyard take on those Linda Vater aesthetics. I am still having withdrawals.

    Garden is fabulous!!. I also have seen videos from professional landscapers that warn against having climbing roses or climbing plants trailing up the house as rats and mice and other wildlife will crawl right up onto your house.

    Hi Linda, maybe you have ask yourself the next questions:
    do you like a building next to your open door
    of your great room a good place ?
    What is the vieuw from inside out ?
    How much light takes it away or give it ?
    I love your side-walk.
    Have a nice day.

    Hi Linda, new viewer here. Your yard is beautiful. When you set your shed against the house wall, remember to leave enough room between the shed and house to do any repair work that may need to be done to the house bricks in the future. Also, to move your heavy pots and other heavy things, use a handtruck with the big air filled tires on it. I am 67, physically limited, and I use one to move small to humongous dirt filled pots, large rocks, stacks of bricks, and large flat cement pavers. Little or no lifting! The loaded handtruck can be manuevered into most any spot you want to set the pots with very little strain on yourself. Just be careful not to let the pot roll sideways when you tilt the handtruck back to roll it to where you're going. My handtruck is one of my most used tools in my gardens.I also use it to move large bags of potting soil from place to place. It's a huge help when you are moving things by yourself and you are a diy landscaper like me. I promise, once you use one, you won't know how you managed without it. Have a great rest of your week!

    I wonder if you might want the shed over on the other side closer to the air conditioner because you can get there by way of your little side path from the front. Seems all your utilitarian items could be on that side of new porch.

    Your garden is really coming along. I love roses but have to many grandchildren that love to run and play in my yard and I'm always afraid of them getting picked. I had a rose bush when my children were little and my daughter got a thorn in her leg and I never knew until it poked out of her leg! You should have Stewart cross the side street and show us your side yard from across the Street, it's kind of hard to envision it.

    Enjoyed your great work so far. Not sure of your plan for the back, but I'd like to make a suggestion or two for your consideration. First, I would have the brick garage in the yard refinished with the German schmear technique; it would lift the look. I would also have a raised bed installed against its long side painted a color to match the fence. A modestly sized black finish greenhouse in the far right corner of the yard would give the entire yard a certain ambience and properly lit would be gorgeous at night. I would depart from mimicking the look in the front of the house and prepare larger areas of paving or even a patch or two of grass for the eye to rest. There is a place for contemporary design to fit into a more traditional garden that is uplifting. Am enjoying your process.

  • @gardeninggrandma5247
    @gardeninggrandma5247 Před rokem +20

    Hi, Linda! Go for the greenhouse! A greenhouse that is attached to the side of your garage would look wonderful! Incorporating it on the side of the garage would create some unity vs creating another structure in the yard, which could look very busy. I don't think you would regret this decision!!

Love to see more of those slate stepping stones they are so nice. Cheers

    I just bought 4 Eden roses (2 Edens, 1 Red Eden and 1 White Eden) and several others too. Be aware Eden can be a favorite for thrips. My highly anticipated blooms have been very browned on the edges and didn't look nice at all. I wasn't aware of thrips before recently, but now I'm learning. Thrips have been really bad this year everywhere due to the moist and cool spring we've had. Just something to be prepared for. I'm excited to see how your's will grow and fill in. It's going to be so gorgeous!

  • @indie8189
    @indie8189 Před rokem +1

    Eden is the queen of a garden.
    Strongly recommend climbing rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' for the other side. Eden usually doesn’t repeat-bloom very well, but 'Leonardo da Vinci' bloom from spring till frost.

  • @themainer1267
    @themainer1267 Před rokem +2

    Everything is coming together so well. The shed might be better positioned by the AC and perhaps have the back opened so that it can be placed over the electrical boxes on the house and still have storage space inside. Near the gate would seem to neck that area down too much, and the swing of the door wouldn't be very convenient, almost an obstacle. It would also detract from the beautiful new windows. The table has already been placed there, so necessity has already dictated what should be there.
    The extra brick could be used to build a low wall to extend the building on the side near the seating area. The upper wall would be made of glass so that you could have your greenhouse. It would look terrific from the house and from the seating area nearby. Again, necessity already has you putting greenhouse-like items in that area. The low brick wall and a greenhouse shelf would camouflage the gas lines, and shelving could be mounted to the wall of the building. So very looking forward to the results, whatever you decide.

    Love the side garden plans. A glass greenhouse where you have your outside dining/seating would be spectacular. It could be a multi-purpose room where you can place a table & chairs, lighting all around and stunningly beautiful plants. You have a smart way of selecting beneficial plants that beautify any space, Linda. I've seen it done on a grand scale and in a small 12x12 scale & both are equally charming; It is all about the glass & lighting. 👍

    Linda, a woman after my heart, I also love the instant gratification in my new home! I am in my second year and it still is "A work in process, but that is the basic concept of gardening!" I am a huge fan of Jim Putnam and it was so kind and considerate for you to recognize his brilliance in North Carolina, I am a NC State Extension Master Gardener and he helped me understand and learn what I covered in my classes, he is very accurate in his teachings! With that said, I am so glad you also have mentioned Claus Dalby, I look forward to their informational videos. Cannot wait to see you evolve the backyard, it took me a few years to live with mine.

    Front and side gardens really looking great Linda. So pleased you are getting planted in :). I see a formal room for your backyard with boxes and topiaries. If you don't plan on propagating plants you don't really need a greenhouse other than charming esthetics. The cute ones are expensive. You'll still need to rent space in the greenhouse you already use because heating a greenhouse is so expensive and you have so many plants to harbor somewhere. Bottom line whatever you decide will be a wonderful addition to your cottage ideal.

    You’ve gotten a lot straightened out in the backyard, Linda. It’s a good start. The idea for the shed at that corner sounds good….convenient to both spaces and out of the way. You may want to consider an arbor for the rose at the side door. Climbers do get quite heavy. When it goes over the top it would give you some nice blossoms to admire from inside. You’ll really need to wait on a greenhouse decision until you have more things in place in the back. There are so many sizes and styles available I’m sure you could find a place for one. Can’t believe you have done so much in such a short time. 😊💖🦋🕊

    It all looks sooo wonderful!! Love to see your vision and progress!!! I'm wondering if it wouldn't be fun to make a dining "room" that is easily accessible from your stairs but also kind of hidden from view....a secret garden dining area. It's really hard to judge the area you have for it, but in my very limited urban space coming around the corner of some hicks yew hedge mixed with tall flowers to find my sitting/dining area is always a treat for me and delight to guests. I believe dividing my small area into garden rooms makes it feel larger and each room creates a different feel although all are very simple and very low budget! It is and will always be a work in progress, as all gardens are....lol.

    Hi Linda and Stu, I have some ideas for the back yard, hope I can give some inspiration: I made my entire back yard a kitchen potager. I shop my back yard and Iove it. In shady spots I have parsley and herbs. I made rustic willow spoorts as decoration to fill spots. A narrow Miles choice bay tree hedge is behind blocking an ugly fence.I have espaliered a double grafted apple tree (gala/fuji) and double grafted nashi pear ( two types cant spell them without running to backyard and its cold and windy here) and a yellow fig. In pots I have cara cara blood oranges in a row, so far six but slowly add to get an avenue . I have limes in pots, narrow Dita apple trees that are taller than me, but narrow, under-planted with strawberries in wine barrels. I have dwarf pwears that I made into standards to hide a view into my neighbours yard. zI have started a collection of figs in pots and the white genoa, i think it is has a blood red inside that is amazing. I have made garden rooms with pathways to explore and rosemary hedges. I am growing what I like to eat, and it has taken two years to get where I am by myself. I am enjoying using natural rustic supports to keep my dog off the garden, he grew up with the garden so he is good for a dalmatian. My inspiration is french/Italian and English. I watch Joise from the Cotswolds and Elyse Miller gordon who have wonderful greenhouses I would love. I have changed a cedar play gym into a chook house that will look like something from Harry potter.

    Love everything! Could you top those conical gardenias in the pots and make them more spherical over time? They would be pretty just in their natural forming habit, too, but agree about not having two cone shapes together on each side. Your arbs under the windows have definitely greened up and fluffed out and that will be a pretty hedge…and I’m relieved they’re not Leyland Cypress! 💕. You look as chic as ever today, Linda!

    You were asking about where you put your garden shed. Good spot at corner of your house. You might consider having it built to favor your cottage house. Aka She Shed. They are so cute and very useful for many things. I have one and I hang my tools on the side and have it fixed up to be a part of my garden landscape.

    Looks amazing! Have loved this transformation front to back. Looking forward to more updates.
    We grow a gorgeous rose, madam Alfred carriere, and a clematis Ernest Markham, together through trellis in our garden. We joined 3 trellis panels together into a triagle shape support and the rose and clematis grow through the middle then cascade over the top like a tree. It's stunning when in bloom and the rose is a repeat flower, the early blooms are white, the second flush blooms are a pale pink. We love our "rose tree".

    Always lots to do as your mind is processing and planning. Very nice walk about and loving your plans for the side yard. It will fill in and be so lovely. It's hard to wait. As for the greenhouse...I really can't see where you would put it without the backyard looking crowded. I'd go for the open spaces and beautiful plants.

    That pathway from the drainage grid to the garden gate would suit better to be covered in flagstones. That would make it look wider with no grass on the sides. I think😍💕

  • @jenniferhooks2454
    @jenniferhooks2454 Před rokem +2

    Yes, the front garden is looking quite charming. I like the play of colors, forms, and textures.
    Since you have thought long and hard about the front garden, your mind might need a little bit of time to recharge for the backyard. Gardens are not built overnight.
    The crape myrtle looks my mother's did when we had to cut it down because it was too close to the house. It turned into a thicket of suckers.
    Question-is there space between your garage and the fence to put things like your composter? If so, that could be your hidden maintenance area. Lots of garden adventures to come.

    My daughter and I put a 220 electric line to our greenhouses for winter. We also have the Gardyn hydroponic gardyn in the greenhouses. They water themselves three times a day turn the lights on and off at morning and night. Primarily I change the water monthly and put fertilizer in the water. The bugs are uninterested in our lettuce and herbs
