I have 40 years worth of crap, most of it still working, too, though I did lose one machine to a VARTA battery(a kind of battery used in '80s computers that ALWAYS leak, if you have anything from before about 1994, you definitely wanna check for one and snip the damn thing off if it hasn't already leaked) and most of it is useless except for some nostalgia.

A spare GT710 is never a bad thing to have, just in case.
Considering a lot of motherboards have gone backwards in having no onboard, something I thought went extinct in the mid '90s and definitely shouldn't've ever made a comeback, it's always good to have a cheap card on hand for diagnosis reasons.

My recent run with graphics cards I've had to do things with hasn't been bad, no bulk buys but early in the year I got a 3080 listed as broken for $280, it was overheating new paste and pads did the trick and now it's my daily driver so to speak. The other is a radeon Instinct MI25, which is more or less a WX 9100 (which itself is more or less a vega 64 with more VRAM by default) but with a single display connector that by default doesn't output anything, both bioss flashed to WX9100 bios and away she went. The MI25 looks like an abomination, with the stock passive server cooler removed for a raijintek aftermarket cooler (I already had it on hand I wouldn't go out and buy one for that card when you could just buy a regular vega for what the cooler costs), 2 corsair fans plus an adapter, the front plate dremeled a bit for that to fit, and a PCI bracket meant for another card that required some modification to use, it does better than you'd expect looking at it. Lately I've had my eye on a Radeon VII on ebay that happens to be missing it's cooler and has the single slot bracket that probably indicates it was watercooled when in use, I have the sneaking suspicion it'd be untested rather than simply broken, and possibly functional, if I could slap another cooler together it could be cool.

I always get the 80% off final value fees promo, so yes it is quite commonplace! Top tip - only sell if you have a promotion - eBay's standard 13% fees are way too high. Also interesting that you stopped with Facebook Marketplace; I don't actually have a Facebook account but might create an account (and have it super locked down) just for the Marketplace side of things. Gumtree doesn't do well in my area and I'd like an alternative that doesn't mean a loss of money (and having to fork out for more postage costs) everytime someone hits the "return item" button followed by "doesn't match description or photos", even when you know for sure that your item was as described.

It can be a big pain in the ass sometimes to keep an eye out for these type of bundles that look reasonable or untested listings that have potential, but it does pay off if you don't mind casually spending like 5-10 hours a week on it and are familiar enough with basic board repairs. When buying the actual computer hardware I want for a build it helps to justify some of the absurd reseller costs knowing you are basically just breaking even at the end of the day for something casual that you enjoy doing.

I'm probably one of the only people to intentionally buy an 8400GS..because it had a cool heatsink, gave the seller a laugh but i did burn some time testing some potato specials, comparing a Geforce 2 MX, FX5200, the 8400GS, GT210 amongst other GT cards as a battle of the potatoes..suprised the 8400GS did better than i expected and was a decent budget card if you wanted something new but i imagine an older GT card like a 6600 or 7500GT would've done better unless you needed the Low profile design :)

They have 3 revisions. Unfortunately, revision 1, which is most precious, came death on arrival.

FB marketplace is useless .

I have to agree, 100£ doesn't sound that much at first, but a) is it nice to have 100£ rather than not having them, like you said. An b), which weighs much more for me is the following: as the whole pc thing is a hobby, it is nice that it kinda pays for itself or makes a little profit. I personally got an old Pentium 4 from a dumpster when throwing away old car parts about 6 years ago. A friend asked me, if I wanted to have an old core2duo server from Siemens, but he would need at least a single core for controlling a milling machine in return.... Trade done. Picked up some free old parts like Pentium d pcs, brought them to Lan party's and sold them afterwards. The money went into a core2quad q9650 and a gtx 285. Sold this pc later on and got myself a cheap 4th gen intel board and the cheapest, used brand memory I could find. A friend threw out his i7 4770k and I traded it for an old PCI-E GPU with him. With some leftover money from said Pentium d pcs i got a cheap gtx 760 to pair with the 4770k and 8gigs of ram ABT.2 years ago. One year ago I upgraded my main rig and paired the i7 with a gtx 970 and 16gigs of ddr3_2133. Great times benchmarking and stress testing the machines and components.

There's so many of those dreadful 8400 gs cards around they must have sold like hotcakes back in the day. Probably folks trying to turn old Dell office plodders into gaming rigs but it's a pity the cards didn't go to the tip with the PCs. I guess they were saved when someone went inside to salvage the 2 gigs of RAM noticed a 'graphics card' installed.

      @BusAlexey Před 10 měsíci

@@KitsuneVoss The reason for that is simple - testing the card could take like 30 minutes for some easy test, and if they're "not testing" the card, there's 2 options - they tested and it's dead, or they're a 1000+ GPU mining operation, in which case I wouldn't buy from them too.

The only game that wrecked this card was ac black flag with 12 fps and I beat that game. Then after the newer release, this card got lost in the shadow realm.

the market has gone down a ton since he bought those 22 back then.
Recently i picked up 20 Cards for $96 and 11/20 worked perfectly fine
Of the ones that worked i ended up with these:
    2x GTX 460
    1x GTX 560
    1x GTX 550Ti
    1x RX 480 8GB
    1x GTX 780Ti
    1x HD 7970 3gb
    3x HD 5770
    1x HD 6850
The others were just basic GTX 650s and GTX 750Ti that either had artifacts or didn't display at all....
I found it sort of odd that the low power video cards did not work and the higher end and older cards worked fine... i figured it would be the other way around

This is pretty similar to my experience from 2015-2018.
I bought a few lots of parts and a couple systems with the intent to part them out, and tried to do some arbitrage between Craigslist and eBay because uncommon parts like Quadros would go cheap locally due to lack of interest. I made a couple hundred bucks over the time I was doing it, but I was always sitting on *something* I couldn't use personally and needed gone, always tempted to hold onto interesting things I needed to flip in order to remain profitable, and on an hourly basis I would have made more money by putting in overtime at my day job instead.
Early '18 I threw in the towel on flipping, and have since just focused on trying to track down deals on those weird and interesting things. That was the most fun part anyway.
