Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

When we first meet Nacho he seems to embody a tough guy but as the series gets deeper he appears to be the most vulnerable and the most troubled.
I legit feel bad for him
I disagree. When we met him doing that deal with Pryce and Mike already knew he was sneaking around behind Tuco's back, it was obvious he wasn't the muscle. He is a thinker, and a smart guy, and therefore troubled that he's thrown his lot in with a family like the Salamancas. But because he's not in Breaking Bad we know that in the end he's not quite smart enough.
@@joellahrman4557 I just hope he escapes with his life in tact, same with Kim.

rare comment here that isn't asinine
What was the reason anyways?
@@goldenhospitality8521 The reason Mike did what he did is because at this point he'd rather do some work and struggle than to mindlessly take a life and become nothing but a killer.
He thought Nacho was genuinely asking him, but really they're both the same. Men with soft cores who ended up too deep in a vicious side of the world.
Of course Mike became a cold killer anyway, but that came later.
@@NtoTheM That’s what I like about Mike, despite losing a significant portion of his humanity he never completely snuffed it out. In fact that’s what got him killed too, he had tons of chances to take out Walt but he didn’t.

@@NtoTheM Mike was an ex-vet and cop, he's definitely a killer.

I think Nacho really respected Mike as a veteran "old gangster" (OG) - Mike was very shrewd and tough and wise.
Mike tried SO HARD to stay in the game and not kill anyone... Then the next season he had no choice but to do what he was told. Dude is a fair player while also having a big heart, and out of Breaking Bad and Better Caul Saul he's the character I'm the most sympathetic of.

@@gregp103 he's the character i'm most sympathetic towards
@@andrewroberts7428 yes!
He was dirty cop who made his son become a dirty cop who murdered two cops. The best thing he has ever done is absorbing a bullet from Walt.
Nacho tried to act tough and nonchalant but clearly in his eyes and shaken body language you could tell he was disturbed seeing Mike beat up like that. Superb acting by Michael Mando.
@Giovanni Doria False. He showed emotions when that happened, you just didn't catch them.
@Giovanni Doria to be fair, he was likely too distracted by the fact he was gonna get shot next by Victor and Tyrus.
When he said "wow" with his eyes kind of redish i thought "damn, he was really moved by Mike's actions"
The red eyes could be from the dusty wind, but i like to believe he got teary
What I like about Mike is that he had his reasons for everything he did, but didn’t have an ego that would lead him to share his thoughts to those who didn’t understand his actions or couldn’t see the bigger picture. He was smarter and more self controlled than most people are in that regard. It is a weakness to make yourself look smarter than everyone else in the room.
Mike's wisdom was high, but his charisma low.

“You took a long way to not pull that trigger. Why?”
Mike didn’t answer, but I think he did it to “punish” himself out of guilt for his son. This way Nacho won’t have any problems with Tuco, getting Tuco locked up would draw less suspicion, and Mike gives himself the punishment he feels he deserves for his guilt for not being able to protect his son.
I think the actual reason is because Tuco still had to be alive five years later in breaking bad.

Can see in Nacho"s mannerisms that Nacho has a heart felt admiration and respect for Mike.
Nacho thinking: "how rude didnt even finish..."
Killing Tuco, whether he deserved it or not would have been a disaster for Nacho. Mike would have shot Tuco from far away and never been seen by anyone. There could not have been any obvious reason for someone to kill Tuco. Because there would have been no fall guy or rival, then the Salamanca family would have had to turn their suspicions inside Tuco's crew and associates, and Nacho would have ended up being the prime suspect.
Whether they are wrong or right they wouldn't care about interrogating the whole crew and Nacho down in Mexico. As Mike says, "Would you keep your secrets then?"
Mike knows how to play the game too well and people like Nacho didn't quite understand. Hell, throughout the series Mike's giving Nacho protips without Nacho realizing it.
There are plenty of people who could have an obvious reason to murder the asshole that is Tuco. What you see onscreen is not all that is happening in New Mexico.
@@gregp103 Yes but they still have to make a guess and find the person that did it. And so they will also give his crew hell for not protecting him and what would Nacho say? Oh well the Bikers did it! And Don Eladio would say, Bikers, eh?!
@@gregp103 Yes, there are plenty of people who would want Tuco gone, but who would have the balls? Imagine they botched it. Remember, the cartels don't just kill their enemies in matters of "blood for blood," but they would include all the people you care about who may or may not be "in the game".
That's where cartel power comes from. Just think when Hector wanted to get Nacho's father to turn his business into a front, Nacho had to remind him of his relatives. Tuco was safe, except from the DEA, (ie. Hank) only because no Mexican cartel would directly target a US Federal agent. It'll burn their business down.
At this point, Mike turns around to Nacho and says, in a Spanish accent: "Do you know the definition of insanity?"

He didn't kill Tuco because it would have raised far more questions than what he ended up doing instead. Tuco blows up on some dude and beats the shit out of him? Textbook Tuco. 1:39 You don't have enough stickers to get the answer
Because ya can't choose your family, Nacho. Merry Christmas.
This is the moment Mike's left eye became a bruised plum.
So, how I see this is Nacho asks the question, and the only part that's in the light is Mike's swollen bloody face. It's like Mike knows there's an evil part inside him and on some level, he deserves the pain he puts himself through, that's why he didn't just kill again. Mike is punishing that part of himself and the scene is set up to make it obvious.
He responds to Nacho by just walking away and as he turns, the 'good, light, fresh, undamaged' side of Mike comes into light. It's like the filmmakers are showing us (without telling us) that Mike knows there is a part of him that's good and the choices he makes attempt to keep him on the path of redemption. That's why he didn't kill Tuco.
But then, in later episodes he just f**ks everyone up anyway so maybe I'm talking complete trash.
It does make sense anyways, BB and BCS are all about imagery and messages without much further explanation. The end of your comment had me laughing though
