I'm Irish, yi6u definitely not the only foreign tourists, Romania gets over 11 million visitors each year. I personally think it is the best country in Europe by far. Great food, amazing places to see, great welcoming people. I think the West is very unfair with Romania. I will always go there in the summer and winter. Enjoy guys

I lived in Braila on the Danube years ago, it was brilliant and I love the city and Bucharest as well, I went up the mountains to visit some famous monasteries, truly beautiful. I love Romania and everything to do with it, its safe and I never felt out of place. The other thing is a lot of the population speaks English, although I did try to speak Romanian, one of my favourite countries in the world
Also, Romania is very safe, actually one of the safest countries in EU.

Being Romanian means that I can explain things that other people don’t understand about my country.
31:50 Caru’ cu Bere is not a restaurant, it wasn’t built to be a restaurant and will never be a restaurant really, its name translated makes it clear: “The Beer Cart-wagon” .
Caru’ cu Bere was built on purpose to be a beer- house and that’s what it was, it is and will be forever, food being secondary to the drinks actually, the food is pub-food, nothing more and not much to chose from, like in a pub or beer-house anywhere.
People are supposed to go there to drink beer, but the booking is necessary not for the posh food, it’s necessary because every tourist and every other Romanian who lives abroad and re-visits Bucharest for a reason or another, feels like they have to go there and in order to avoid frustration and a ginormous queue at the door (as few years ago used to be, when 80-150 people were queueing there just for the architectural design inside all the time) they opted for reservations/booking to decongest the sidewalk in front .
Only the comments of tourists and visitors, vloggers included turned it into a restaurant because Romanians know pretty well that Caru’ cu Bere is a beer-house/posh pub, not at all posh eatery.
People go there for the architecture, for the atmosphere and those who know well Romanian history go there because all the great Romanian writers and poets and some famous politicians used to gather in that place about 100 years ago and in between the two WW.
Romanians don’t ever have mici and beer for breakfast, the mici are a snack or a meal in itself (depending on how many you order but after 11 or 12 o’clock when the morning is over); mici for Romanians are the equivalent to a burger in US.
I don’t know if Americans have burgers with beer for breakfast but Romanians don’t, unless they are coming home from an all night party where they drank a lot and on the way home no other food outlet is open but a mici stand.
The regular Romanian breakfast usually consists of an omelette or fried or poached eggs with bread and tomatoes or assorted salad, and some platter of cheeses and salami and/or ham or both, or French toast ( very popular with a cup of tea) or bread and butter with jam or honey or sweet biscuits with jam & butter and all of the above accompanied by a mug of milk, cocoa or tea or black or white coffee.
At least one of these hot beverages are a must for breakfast.
PS In a produce market you will always see people drinking beer at 9-10 o’clock in the morning because those people selling/working in the markets are waking up at 3-4am to start the day and set up the stands and bring in their produce and get ready to open at 6-7 in the morning, so by 9-10am they already had breakfast a long while ago because they started the day already 5-6 hours before that and they had a rushed breakfast 4-5 hours prior to that beer, for them 9 or 10 in the morning it’s sort of like lunchtime.

Romanian here! 26:10 70' soviet aliens building is actually "The Tehnoimport" tower block who was built in the first half of the 20th century, in 1935 by the architects Harry Stern, Rudolf Frenkel, Marcel Locar. From a volumetric point of view, the cylindrical tower, the vertical accent of the corner construction, which generates a dynamic architecture, can be observed. Architectural style: modernism.
The block is part of a modernization and rehabilitation plan.

Hello. I am wondering who advice you to have mici for breakfast? Mici is usually a heavy food, not for breakfast ....the airport is wild? I think you can use the word busy to describe it... and the comparison of the traffic in Bucharest with SE Asia, not fair at all.... and yes, Bucharest is more cleaner and safer than Paris.

4. at 26:13 in the order you mentioned: The Central Bank building (Banca Națională a României), the former HQ building of the Chamber for Commerce and Industry (yes, it does look bad, but they will start restoration works on it soon), the Adriatica building. Most blocks in the downtown are not soviet, rather they were built in the interwar period (you'll recognize them by the wilder shapes they have and the bigger size of the apartments - like the one you stayed in). They are a significantly duller indeed, but the communist blocks are more square-y/rectangular and boxy.

This day we ended up walking 18k steps, just in the old city area alone. We already can't wait to visit again and see more of the country side and meet the people there. If this city wasn't on your radar, it definitely should be added.

The elevator is not broken, it has a pressure plate to activate it (safety feature for small kids). As proof that it was a good idea, my friends toddler did get yeeted by a newer elevator without pressure plate :D
Late to the party, but yeah. Generally, Romanian cities are much cleaner than Paris / Rome / Naples and other western cities. Traffic, while still chaotic, is better than in Italy. And this might be a shock to a lot of people (as it was to me), people are generally more civilized here when it comes to common sense (like letting people who are in the metro get out before you trying to get in) vs Italy

we do have it all, it is the place where we still have grandparents with outhouse in the back of the yard, but watching CZcams one of the fastest internet in the world, it is the country where the old gets mixed up with the new...
there are a lot of things to say about Romania, but the best way to sum it up is: "Romania, it`s not what you think man!"
I think that's the best way to say it. It goes under the radar for a lot of people. I think most still think of it as something post Soviet collapse. We really loved our visit, some of the friendliest people in Europe.

Traffic laws and rules of the road are very stringent in Romania.
Driving school is a serious process which takes around 3 months before you can take the road test with an actual police officer.
Nothing at all like south-east Asia. Maybe you had that impression in Bucharest because taxi drivers in general break traffic laws just to "hack" traffic, but mostly in the rest of the country people follow the rules of the road.
You take the driving test with police officers? Wow! Sounds a good but tough.
Does it help to prevent accidents on roads and take driving seriously?
Sorry they are not taking it seriously. Driving around with max 20 km per hour in driving lessons. While the rest of traffic is driving 50/60/70. They may learn to drive according to some rules, but they totally missed the traffic insight. I wondered often about this way of lessons and exams. (My wife is from Bucharest and we live now in Western Europe). The first thing I did when she was here was to send her to driving school. 😊
But that's my opinion about the driving lessons.
The building at 26:10 is art Deco, and possibly many things that you considered communist were, in fact, art Deco, a french style developed in the 1930 where the main focus was utility, instead of visuals.

You missed the home-made grape juice thinking it's wine at 10:10. It's not alcoholic and very tasty. It's usually a drink for children around the time wine is made.

You are welcome to visit Romania at any time. 7 days are ok, for a cultural adventure but not on the run. You can visit Bucharest, two hours by train from Bucharest you have the Sinaia mountain resort with the Peles Palace.

The artesian water fountains don’t function between October and May because that’s late autumn, winter and early spring when the pipes and the water might freeze, the fountains function between May and October because those are the warm months.

I've lived in Bucharest my entire life and Caru' cu bere has been slacking in the food department ever since it became really big with tourists and such(not that it wasn't a popular spot before but I mean ever since tourism has picked up a bit more in Bucharest) so don't feel bad about not liking it much, the building is beautiful and all but the food isn't spectacular and I think the other similar place nearby, Hanu' lui Manuc, is better(they do have great papanasi for example) though even that one isn't the best you can find. Other than that, I hope you did get out of the old town area more, there's some nicer neighborhoods with old streets all around Victoriei avenue and in the area between Victoriei Square and Herastrau(Regele Mihai now) park, for example, or Cotroceni neighborhood. Old town was pretty much left in ruin by the communists and used to be a total mess til maybe 10-12 years ago or so. Oh and if you happen to go to the mountains to see the castles, there's a lot of beautiful places just outside the main touristy areas, like the mountain villages just a few km from Bran(Pestera, Magura) that are very picturesque, more so on a nice autumn day, there's the Transylvanian villages, if you have a car, and so on
We went to a few other lesser known places in Bucharest and the food was 10/10. The building was nice, worth the visit but like you said, the food was so so. We only had 3 day to visit, so we will becoming back in the spring to see the mountains and more of the rural areas. Romania has soooooo much to see and explore. Plus the people are some of the kindest in Europe.

At 23:40 - there we light candles for our dead or for our living, there are separate areas.
For example if I want to pray for well upon you, I will light a candle in the living (Vii) area for you.
If I were to pray for the soul of one of my ancestors, I would light a candle in the dead (Morti) area for them.

You could have taken almost any public transport and you would've gotten there faster and way cheaper. Rush hours are a headache and everyone is rushing all the time in big cities.

You can light a candle and place it in honor of someone who has died (Morti-"the dead") or you can light a candle for the luck of a person who is living (Vii-"the living").
People light candles for their families (for family members who have died and those who are alive)
Almost every Orthodox church has such a place.
I’ve never seen them outside. Usually I see them inside on the sides by the front.

The building at 26:15 definitely isn't a "communist" building. It's a modernist building built in the 1930s. Bucharest is probably one of the cities with the largest amount of art deco and modernist buildings in Europe and you will find them anywhere around the city. They may look like soviet blocks to the ones that do not know any architecture at all mostly because they have decaying facades and are not taken care of but art deco and modernist definitely hasn't got anything to do with brutalist architecture.

Thank you for your video in România you have very many beautiful places,i made a list of some places which you can visit: a very beautiful place is Therme Bucharest it is the largest and modern complex of thermal baths in Europe,Library Cărturești and also în Bucharest you have the Palace of Parlament the haviest and expensive buldin administrative in the world,Roman Athenaeum and you should really go to Salina Turda in Cluj it is amazing, Castelul de lut in Sibiu (which looks like a fairy tale), the Palace of Culture in Iași, Trasfăgărășean and Transalpina are two of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world, Vidraru Dam, Mud Volcanoes in Buzău, Danube Boilers, Egreta Complex in Brezeasca, Danube Delta in Tulcea(It is in the UNESCO heritage), Sphinx in the Bucegi Mountains, Cheile Bicazului.😊

About eating in Bucharest, there are a lot of restaurants. But do not take those high ratted one's like Carul and Hanul. The food is not that special and atmosphere often to crowded. Just search a bit just outside the center, and you find good or maybe better restaurants with better prices. And the public transport in B is not bad and cheap. Even Taxi is affordable.
In general I feel safe in B. I've been visiting the town for over 20 year's and never happened something.
Except a little scratch on the car in parking.

I spent a fair amount of time in Bucharest. The only time I got pick-pocketed was on a tramvai like at 11:00 at night. I think as long as you don’t go hang out later in the night (like anywhere else in the world), you should be fine.
Those elevators man. They scare me. Also it amuses me to hear americans talking about safety in Romania. Bucharest is one of the safest cities in Europe. I mean you could go around in the dark of the night and nobody will bother you, unlike in the US capital or other big cities. The only unsafe thing about Bucharest is the driving. We Romanians get possessed by the devil when we get in the driver's seat.

You guys are so sweet and so brave! I also love that you went to verry romanian places that are really not for tourists. PIATA OBOR is really not for tourists. It is the place where all the artisans people go to buy the materials for their passions. or bisnesses. or whatever. it is also the place where you can have the best MICI in bucharest. We romanians are also verrry ortodox christians. From there all of the churches. And from there, You Have to be verry respectfull with our belives.

the church is called Saint Anthony the Great, and the face of the icon on that fence is Saint Anthony the Great, nearby is the Voivodeship Palace of Vlad Țepeș.
Regarding security, It's usual that people that live on the country side to feel a bit unsafety when they travel to Bucharest. I recommend you to travel to Brasov or Timisoara, or maybe the country side(Sighisoara, Viscri, Maramures, Bucovina). Good luck

Be serious Bucharest is very safety I am living here since '99 and I walk at every hour night and day and is very safety specially night being a woman is very important for me to walk night no fear.

Great video. I felt like you back in 2017 on my first visit to the country. And I was so surprised at how safe it was and still is. We try to visit every year because its become our home away from home. You really should visit transylvania! Its just breathtaking. oh and the food... we found that nearly everywhere has the most delicious food. Love Mici and Sarmale! Papanasi is the best dessert ever! Oh and you need to visit the bakery called LUCA!
the bar gave you visinata shots... it is cherry that waz smash and fermented with sugar for 1 week or 2 and then they add pure alchool! you can find in marketplace that seel 1L alchool!
The bookshop that you visited, Carturesti, serves tea and you can pick any book of the shelf and read it at the table. no charges.

The apartment for city center, was $64 a night a believe, for a capital city this was a great price. There’s one more video we did about Romania up, we will be coming back this spring to see more of the countryside 😄

Welcome guys! At Caru' cu bere the food is notoriously bad, you pay for the atmosphere. Read the tips, because romanians are very friendly.
12:00 "must" isn't home made wine, it's fresh grape juice (not fermented, just refrigerated), offered in wine stores as an alternative for kids and people who don't want to drink alcohol.
And you're right about "Carul cu bere" (lit. The beer cart), it's more of a tourist trap than a genuine traditional restaurant.
About the weddings: the vast majority of weddings in Romania take place on Saturdays
Guys it is a social faux pas to drink before noon. People don't drink alcohol before that time besides alcoholics and people working at night or construction workers. Also Romanians would never have mici for breakfast and beer, that is more lunch/ dinner. Traditionally 30-40 years ago people would go to beer gardens after work and have mici and beer. We don't eat them often at home more in beer gardens/street food places.
Just so you know, that's not vodka, it's liquor made of different fruits. Plum is for guys, the sweeter ones like blackberry and sour cherry are for the ladies.
These type of drinks are appetizers and you have them before your meal.
We found out later, got a bottle to take home also.
If you still here or coming back to Bucharest go eat in the "old kitchen" restaurant it's on trip advisor also it's very hidden soo go by foot if you can and walk slow

Bucharest was called the Little Paris the period between world wars (French architects and engineers were brought in to build the city) then the communists took over, destroyed what was nice and replaced everything with concrete blocks...

We used booking. We found an apartment right in the city center. Airbnb has some crazy prices and fees. Local apartments on booking were great price. They have an excellent train system so if you want to stay a little outside the city center you can save money on that. Our place a night was a little over $60
