As a male knitter and sewist I knit a lot of "womens" patterns for myself without issue. Usually shoulder width is not an issue as I'm in the larger sizes of those patterns. My main issue is the length of the neck to the armpit, which is longer. With topdown sweaters I try it on loads and often just lenghten that bit. I also lengthen the body and arms but that is not difficult. With flat knit sweaters I take measurements from, or knit towards the same sizes of the sweaters I have (lay them on top). Sweaters are stretchy so pretty forgiving with sizes and fit. Best of luck to your partner!

Hey, thanks so much for these tips, really useful :) we thought we might need to increase the shoulder to armhole length on the vest he's working on at the moment. I was hoping that a lot of the patterns we were looking at were basically unisex, as long as they didn't have any specific shaping. I think there will be some things like what you've mentioned, but glad to hear you've had success 😊

My best fitting sweaters are thanks to Elizabeth Zimmerman's percentage system. EPS is my tried and true and thats what I use to knit all of my gift sweaters as well. There is a small learning curve and a tad bit of math, but its nothing a basic calculator can't handle. I worked my first sweater with that technique and it turned out great. I personally like 5-6 inches of ease. Any texture can be inserted into the pattern. My first was a guernsey style jumper.
Books that explain the process best: "knitting without tears" or "the knitting workshop" (pretty sure they both cover the subject but workshop might be more detailed) both by Elizabeth Zimmerman and " knitting in the old way" by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts which is probably the most detailed overall. They help to design a sweater based on the gauge of your yarn and needles rather than trying to match your knitting to a patterns gauge. Really liberating and fun to boot. CZcams is also, of course, a wonderful tool and lots of people explain this process via video as well.
So glad he is finding joy in this craft and I'm sure you have been a good example! I wish him the best of luck with his first sweater! Love the video and your work looks beautiful, as usual!
Edit: my one tip is to write down what your percentages are for everything and where you want to increase/decrease before you get going and keep that "pattern" in your project bag for that sweater. I learned this the hard way and its such an easy reference to have it on hand so you don't have to keep referencing the book. Example: everything is based on the number of stitches it takes to go around your torso. Wrists are usually 20% of that number and necklines are usually 33%. I would calculate what those are and write a list of all other needed percentages too, so you have an easy and quick reference. Hope that makes sense! Happy to answer any questions you might have.

This is really interesting, thanks so much for sharing this information. I'm definitely going to have more of a read about this - it sounds like a great way to approach making your own garments (rather than making specific patterns). Glad you've had such success with it!

Love your choices especially the colours for your quilts It’s so good to find someone who cares about sustainability, and doesn’t use cheap oil based synthetic cloth. I wonder if many sewers actually know the damage polyesters etc do. Lovely floral dress which looks gorgeous . When I saw you in it I wondered if you have seen sewing therapy’s Chanel. She makes styles I think you would like, and she has just produced a pattern based on a hanbok which I think would really suit you. Great to hear your husband is knitting.

    • @threadandyarn
      @threadandyarn  Před 10 měsíci

Thank you! It's definitely something I've grown into - I think the polys can be exciting when you first start because it seems perhaps more accessible, but actually there's so much you can find second hand, or just being creative with the scraps you have from lovely natural fibres. I like feeling like my clothes will one day just compost/disappear, and other than the production of them it makes the impact pretty small. Glad you enjoyed the quilt colours. I often go for warm browns but I'm really enjoying pairing them with blues too 😊 thanks for your lovely comment and recommendation - I'll check them out!

Thank you for this lovely inspiration video. I really love the dress you wear, it's stunningly pretty! Currently I'm knitting the Woolly Waffle Sweater by Stephen West for my husband and only have to finish one more sleeve. Since I would consider myself as being in an advanced beginner stage of knitting and did have no problems whatsoever with this pattern, I can recommend it. Love and greetings to you from Germany. I will definitely come back and watch more of your content.

I'm fascinated by your lovely quilted wall hanging and quilt plans and the dyed fabric, Do you have any videos of your dyeing? Its interesting to hear someone else thinking their plans through. I spend more time planning than doing, I'm afraid!!
Your gingham linen pinafore looks good layered, it's very nice being less bulky. I am planning one with a gathered skirt but seeing this has made me re-think.
I can imagine your excitement at your partner wanting to knit, what a team!! I'll have a look at my knitting patterns. I'm sorry, I can't help with a shawl pattern.

thanks for posting this video, I really enjoy your choices in fabrics and patterns. As far as adding another layer under the check pinafore/jumper, along with a petticoat you may want to consider making bloomers. My daughter loved wearing dresses and since she was the only girl child (with 3 older brothers) I was more than happy to provide those. One issue though was that she also loved climbing trees and turning cartwheels, handsprings etc so the solution I came up to help keep her modest , more or less, with was to sew her up a bunch of old fashioned bloomers to wear under the dresses. I used a pj bottom pattern and sized up a couple sizes to add fullness. I made them to reach mid calf, turned them up a couple inches and made a channel for 3/4” elastic while leaving the bottom edge to become a frill or ruffle. It’s a good thing I enjoyed making these because she also had some she used for pj bottoms and requested these right up through college years, even as she had the skill to sew up her own at that age. She participated in community theater programs and the bloomers were quite popular both as costume additions since they were easier to dance in than wearing petticoats and to wear over body suits backstage. I made too many to count over the years as most of her friends also asked me to make some up for the as well. They can be made in cotton flannel in colder months to add warmth. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Thanks so much for sharing this, how delightful that they had a whole journey with her and were used by her friends too 😊 you've really got me thinking now, I hadn't considered making bloomers. They might be more practical, as you say. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and my makes 😊

What kind of sorcery is this?! I take my black pointy hat off to you! Your man suggesting you both knit in the pub!! Pass that potion please, I would like to slip it into my husband’s dinner tonight.
Please don’t judge yourself too harshly for wanting/needing to indulge yourself in the comfort and sanity of crafting, knitting, sewing. I do exactly the same and always tell everyone ‘it’s what keeps me sane’, the world is quite shocking at the moment and so many things totally out of our control…what can we do but escape into dreaming of beautiful, gentle things. Both your dresses are a delight.
I’ve just finished my first Ranunculus and it came out amazing, it’s on a clothes hanger next to my bed so I can gaze at it’s silky woolly beauty and feel tingles. A moment of pleasure and excitement.

I know, right - I couldn't believe it!! He's always liked making things and is very practical, but is absolutely obsessed with the vest he's making. He's gotten very excited by natural/undyed wool and the different fleece colours and textures. He is also making himself his first shirt at the moment, so I guess it's been coming.
Thanks for your other point - I'm glad it bring a little joy. Making things definitely keeps me sane, especially slower crafts like knitting and hand-quilting.

Try Sylvia McFadden on ravelry for some shawl pattern inspiration. I think a lot of hers is lacework but they look textured. Also the Sunshine on the Path shawl by Patricia Anne Fortune or the Hollows shawl by Melody Hoffmann. I knit my husband a Flax sweater which is Aran weight and super easy - not much too it by means of texture though. Andrea Mowry has some nice options (Gib II - though it's worsted weight but might work) and I've seen someone turn her Nurtured sweater into a men's version (Emma from Woollymammoth Fibro Co youtube podcast). Happy making!

I made a melilot shirt by deer and doe- which has a dropped shoulder and peter pan collar, but I don't wear it that much because the armpit is too low for a sleeveless dress to go over it which is a shame really. Love both the dress and the pinafore. I love layering dresses and like you I also want to stay warm. I usually manage with fleece tights and a slip in winter, but now I am thinking of making bloomers. Something that doesn't add volume at the waist and tummy, but flares out towards the bottom.

Thanks for keeping me (and us all) company! 🧶❤ I knitted my partner the Rift pullover by Jared (can’t remember their last name, blinking) from Brooklyn Tweed. It was a fun knit (despite all the sweater surgery I eventually had to do) and you probably could do it with Aran weight yarn too.
I mashed up the Anthea blouse with Georgia tee (by Elizabeth Suzann studio) last summer and it was so fun! My first independent pattern mash-up. 🎉
I’m dreaming of the Olya shirt, but at the same time I’m dreading the process because I’ve heard that it’s not the easiest shirt pattern there is… I’ve definitely decided to make it without the breast pockets to make the process a bit easier, but still… dreading 😅

      @threadandyarn  Před 10 měsíci

I'll have a look at the Rift, thanks! I found the Olya a little tricky the first time I made it, but have made three now and love them 😊 there are things to learn if it's your first time with some more classic shirt details like sleeve plackets (it was for me), but they're OK if you take it show. Paper theory has a step by step picture guide online too. It was the shoulder I found trickiest, but my best tip would be to take it slow, and look at that online guide 😊

I've been needing to give my hands/arms some rest from knitting, so I finally had some mental space/time to do sewing. I began a Zero Waste gathered shirt dress from Birgitta Helmersson's book yesterday. My fabric isn't as wide as was recommended so I'm not totally sure if the fit is going to work well but I think I'll be able to hack it if necessary. Really excited, combining a Liberty tana lawn in blue & white on top with a yarn dyed peach-portwine-blueyteal plaid from Blackbird fabrics on bottom.

Oh that's so pretty! I bet it will look lovely in the P&P :) Maybe I'll put together a video on my style journey at some point then!

So funny, my husband cant understand why i keep buying the same fabric as i always buy linen gingham. If my house was on fire. Apart from my husband, I probably save my Merchant and Mills gingham/checks collection!

Haha I love that, I'd probably be the same, and be going back for wool too. Their gingham and checks are just the best.

Hi, have you looked at Simplicity 9646 for an option as a peter pan collar blouse?

No I hadn't, thank you! If I change the sleeves that could work well

I would love to make a jumper for my husband that actually fits 🤣 I found that using patterns for females (or just ones not specifically for men) have caused fit issues and I just would love one to come out right.. 🫣🙏
I'd love to see what patterns you end up finding.
I just love the gingham obsession 🥰

Yes, this is what I'm wondering! He's making the vest no 1 at the moment, but we're measuring a lot and possibly deepening the armholes. Fingers crossed it works out because he loves it and is very excited!! I'll share the patterns I think as I've had so many good suggestions! Obsessed with gingham, as ever 😊

@@threadandyarn I have daydreams of my husband desiring to knit haha
I really hope his vest is a success ☺️ I am thinking about making a vintage vest.. like a full on fair isle one. Perfectly normal to want to dress my husband in the same clothes as my great grandfather would have worn 🤣

@emilykatemadethis um yes absolutely! I love that lol and am also trying to guide his style choices that way 😅 the fairisle vest sounds perfect
