The Eyes of the City: Street Photography

  • Timing, skill, and talent all play an important role in creating a great photograph, but the most primary element, the photographer’s eye, is perhaps the most crucial.
Throughout these turbulent and creative years I paced the streets with my native New Yorker's eye for compassion, irony and un-varnished fact.
The results are presented in The Eyes of the City, many for the first time in print. Overtly, they capture a complex time when beauty mixed with decay, yet below the picture surface, they hint at the unrecognized ghosts in the American psyche.
Richard Sandler presents “the Eyes of the City", one picture at a time, explaining both street photography techniques and strategies. The big question is what are the differences in street culture before and after 9/11/01?

people complaining about his "long intro", but if you can hold patience for 20 minutes, the pictures are worth it. This guy is hugely underrated i guess. Some amazing street photographs, and the honesty with which he narrates is good to hear as well...totally worth it!!!

I guess that's the way you watch movies too huh? Skimming through the set up to get to the action. What is the point of enjoying anything without understanding its context and background?

@@jacoville You decide you know something about another person based on a five word comment they made four years ago? Maybe you need to reflect on your ability to hold judgement, and not make assumptions.

Loved this video. Great Street Photos. This photographer is a down to earth guy, who admits that some of the shots are luck. Some of the Street guys talk about rule of thirds, composition, the decisive moment etc for scenes that are available for only a fraction of a second.

I like depressing images but not these as they're too random and offer no sense of resolve. There was a few I really liked, the subway ones in particular, but most were just flat and uninspiring. I understand that it's real life, but that shouldn't be a pass for creating images that don't really offer much past that sentiment.

It's a real pity that street photography died when cellphones and internet reached the masses, as Sandler himself said: "There is nothing more boring, nothing more nondescript and vacant than a person on a cell phone walking down the street. They seem to be out of the game... People are walking around in bubbles.”
Nowadays street photography is pretty much all the same, same subjects, same style, no personality.
