    Why not base the F-16s donated to Ukraine just over the border in Romania or Poland? Putin wouldn't dare attack a NATO member country and therefore presumably those F-16s would be completely safe at a Romanian or Polish air base with runways in good order? Apparently F-16s can fly up to 2,200 nautical miles without refueling. From the Romanian border to Crimea is about 300 nautical miles. Lubllin Poland to Donetsk is about 700 miles so it's perfectly do-able as long as these NATO partners agree.

      If all the 4 countries fulfil their F-16 pledges we are talking about 80 aircraft or about 5 squadrons. This will be a game changer for Ukraine. The F-16 is swiss army knife weapons platform. It can carry:
      AIM120D AA missiles - 180km range, can take down the Su-34 launching the glide bombs
      Sidewinder missiles for Drones and cruise missiles
      JDAM - Precision glide bomb
      AGM-158 JASSM - long range cruise missile

      I agree, but I must admit disappointment with the USA. I know just in the past 5 years they have retired more F-16s from a single training base locally than western Europe have donated. Admittedly this is a training base transitioning to F-35, and the planes are likely training variants rather than combat models, but the USA literally has a thousand or more sitting here in the desert.

    Mr. Bronk's very sober assessment of the F-16's limitations is much appreciated.
    Based on the sensitivity of the F-16 to runway conditions, I still wish the Saab Gripen and/or the A-10 were among the mix.
    The Gripen is a great aircraft. But, the A-10 needs a final act before it's retired, it's 'swan song'; - tough, low maintenance, able to use austere runways, oh, and that gun BRRRRRT!

      There's a lengthy interview Prof Bronk did with an air power focused YT channel a while ago where he thought Gripen was a better choice than F-16, for some of the reasons he discussed here.
      A-10 is not a good choice for Ukraine. It only works if you have air supremacy like the USA does. A-10 would get wrecked by the massed ground based anti-air in the Ukraine war.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott Před 2 měsíci

      @@shiorisaitou4846 Yeah, it's too bad that the A-10 is ill suited, but I understand the reasoning for reaching that conclusion.

      Still, if Ukraine could have just a few A-10s for a 'cameo', it would be worth the Brrrrt!

    We shall see what effect F-16’s actually have very soon. I don’t think they can or will use Western tactics. They will need to use their standoff capabilities along with drone surveillance to more quickly respond to actions on the ground and be able to engage with Soviet aircraft in dogfights. F-16’s were built for dogfighting

    The russians have lost. Not only will they have troops who are untrained and poorly supported, they lack (by the day) the armoured and air support that any army needs to push forward. Ukraine will slowly grind the russians into the mud as time goes by. The sooner Pootin realises this and saves what he has left the better (for him) otherwise he will have nothing of any value to defend his country from internal strife. I am sure China is watching with regard to Mongolia and other eastern areas within russia.

    Bronk brings up good points, but his overall tone is negative and doesn't take into account how adept Ukraine is at adapting. People like Bronk are the same ilk who suggested Ukraine would fall quickly. It's important to be realistic, but being too negative is just as unrealistic as being too optimistic.

    • @hammondpickle
      @hammondpickle Před 3 měsíci

      I don't think I've heard him say that Ukraine was going to fall quickly. If anything in the first year or so (after the first month) he seemed to be saying that Ukraine may well repel the Russians quite quickly.
      What he says isn't negative, unless that is you only ever to hear "good" news.
      What it should be is a wake-up call to the Western governments. This has been said many times by Bronk, and Perun, and others. The F-16 is not the best aircraft, the Swedish equivalents (Gripen?) would be so much better because they are designed to operate from bases in the conditions that Bronk describes.

      @@stu281 Yes, Russians are superhuman and their stockpiles of Soviet scrap are inexhaustible. Any serious analyst knows that if the West, and the US in particular, got serious then Russia might as well go home now. Putin knows this and it's why he invests so much in his disinformation efforts. Russia have been desperately scrambling to make breakthroughs while Ukraine have been starved of resources and got almost nowhere. Even with the limited Ukrainian aid that's arrived thus far they are struggling big time and even being pushed back in some areas. Ukraine are mobilising a lot more men now and their partners are waking up to the stakes. The prognosis for Russia going forward is not good.
