  • Picked up a Leica thread mount camera to see how it performs. It's a really nice camera that has a lot of quirks but is super fun to shoot with. The current gear I trust and use goo.gl/k11n6Y

Great post. I've always liked those Barnack Leicas more than M Leicas. I have Zorki copy of Leica II with collapsible lens and would like very much having real Leica someday. I think f 3.5 lens is fast enough for most situations when using faster film. I have Rollei 35 with f 3.5 40mm lens and it was much cheaper than Rolleis with f 2.8 lens. Thought that little advantage of 2.8 over 3.5 is very negligible to pay considerably more. If I would buy Leica II or III someday I would be perfectly happy with 3.5 collapsible lens.

Totally agree, spending a lot more on 3.5 doesn’t make a lot of sense. Hopefully you’ll get a Leica Barnack one day!

Update on the Ablons. For the genuine article, sellers are asking horrendous amounts, however the photos they provide with their listings are almost always life size, (10cm long), so all you need to do is trace the angles and correct curve and make your own for zilch!!

Holy Scmokes! I bought a couple of those guides for like 10 or 15 bucks years ago. 150? That is nuts!
__ & maybe one of the used Voigtlanders (Bessa) for starting out? Good vid.

Those guides being that expensive always make me chuckle, glad you enjoyed the vid!

i hear the physical glass from the old leica lenses before the m lenses are literally soft glass, like not the coating but the glass itself is soft and you can damage the lens with a clean disposable lens wipe

      Just found this. www.photo.net/discuss/threads/50mm-ltm-summitar-2-0-vs-elmar-3-5.279541/
TLDR: Elmar was pretty durable and good. Summitar, Summar and early Summicron not so much. Post WW2 issues.

The Russian lenses *should* be compatible! The FED and Industar 50's (Basically Elmar copies) can often go head to head with a real Elmar. Yes, many are defective and poorly manufactured, making people think they aren't compatible. If I don't want to use a collapsible lens (Elmar or FED 50), the newish Voigtlander Color-Skopar yields a really nice signature. The Russian Jupiter-9 50/2 can be a cheap fast lens and has a pretty bokeh.
