That new jig is a ring clamp, look for welding robots to be delivered to star factory. Seem like full production line with welding robots, grab the ring, rotate as the robot welds and when done set back down and move onto the next station. They are not screwing around at all.

@appliedfacts - I still think landing on the launch tower is a bridge too far. One little malfunction and you wipe out a very expensive, time-consuming to replace Stage 0 and ground your entire fleet of Starships.
And did you see how close together the two orbital pads will be??? At Canaveral, the Saturn launch pads were tens of miles apart........ for very good reason.

I'm still anxious to see the one final modification needed to justify Starship's existence, cargo access. You're not going to just roll up with say 80 tons of cargo without a cargo hatch and loading system.
There's a lot of moving parts to the science of moving parts

    • @The1QwertySky

@ertySkyYeah, I know. Was thinkin about the first operational launch. Where does the cargo go and how do you load it in. Major re-envisioning required, ground and support systems need to be developed. And how do we insure structural integrity for the trip back down after we've cut big holes in the top half.

@@Winkkin SpaceX has done impossible things before I wouldn't be surprised if they could do it again, and they've got a bit of NASA's help. I think making a good cargo bay is the least of their problems anyway

    • @Winkkin
      @Winkkin Před 3 měsíci +2

@ertySkyOh I'm a SpaceX fanboy. But that large hole in the upper fuselage or to allow the movement of 100+tons of cargo in and out significantly increases stress concerns during maxq and reentry. The issues with marshaling, storing, prepping that cargo is going to require a city unto itself.
I mentioned after the second launch that the launch platform is a long way from being able to launch twice in a month let alone twice in a day. You need to be able to launch 15 refuel ships in order to send one Starship to Mars and I'm sure they wont send just one ship. I'm thinking a fleet of 3 to 5 ships and 50 to 60 refuel launches to get a mission in the air over a short two week launch window. And you cant launch the fuel in advance because of boil-off.
Theres a list of impossible things that need to be done before 2028 or 2030.

Just guessing, but I think the “Stretch Starship” is going to have to wait on the Raptor 3 that has been mentioned. Besides the higher thrust required to get the thing off the ground, the efficiency will have to bump up to get the new heavier Starship past the atmosphere on the same amount of propellant. The engineering on those engines is going to be astonishing.

You may be right. Have they actually caught it yet? I bet they have enough data from falcon 9 landings to get it close. Including this next launch I think it will be 3 more launches before they nail it. This next launch will make it to orbit and the booster will blow up at the tower either in the air or on the ground but the tower is going to be damaged or worse I think. If I’m right we will see a complete and successful launch and landing this time next year. If your right 7 more launches will take us out to about 2 1/2 years before they are successful. I think it will be harder to catch the starship than the booster but I don’t know what do you think?

When you said the sensor failed and it provided stale readings, that assumption was incorrect. Stale telemetry just states the most recent value received by the ground station. The loss of comms due to poor orientation after landing likely resulted in a lack of telemetry and thus the stale value just prior to the topple.

15:43 ISRO did a better job by imposing a pause during descent to totally get rid of lateral movement, then started a slow descent on a scanned surface to land on a spot free of obstacles.

On the second attempt, at least... ISRO's first try was considerably less successful than IM-1. Hopefully Intuitive Machines will sort out a few of their problems (especially the self-inflicted ones) for their next next lander.

It seems like the best course of action for reusability for the launch tower and platform would be a flame diverter to keep the bulk of the thrust directed away from the components. Why not bring the sister company Boring machine and dig a few tunnels to allow the flames to go underground and come out several hundred yards from the platform? That seems like a simple solution compared to the water deluge system they're using now.

Booster can still grow taller, they will either top up the mega bay to be taller as well or build one or two more that will be taller and turn over the current bays to build Starships. Considering how many Starships they are planning to produce more mega bays is highly probable though eventually I'd expect most production will be done in Florida.

At the pace Blue Origin is moving, they'll go from being the industry leaders of CGI rockets to the industry leaders of pathfinder simulated rockets.
The base of the booster is just a pathfinder object. It isn't flight hardware. The inter-stage at the top of the booster propellant tank section also isn't flight hardware. It's another pathfinder component.

I'm inclined to wait for the first landing attempt before commenting on when it will be ready for rapid re-launch. Extensive damage has been done after every launch so far. If the tiles on the rocket continue to fall off that will be a big problem in itself. I think the launch tower is too complex and has too many working parts. Impossible to protect against the rocket blast and return flight. I believe the best way to handle the problem is to have a launch tower(s) with separate landing tower(s). That would cut the problem in half and separate the landing area from all of the equipment necessary for launch. I would probably trash this design and incorporate changes into a new design. The new design would use the best of what they have now and have some kind of channel for flame control. Even back to the first buildings its been known that you have to build on solid ground. When damage is done to the ground and structural support you have to start over. Until that problem is resolved there will be no rapid turn around.

You say *"Extensive damage has been done after every launch so far".*
There have been exactly two flights. Unless you can link to a counter-example, damage following IFT-2 was minimal as compared to IFT-2
You say *"I think the launch tower is too complex and has too many working parts. Impossible to protect against the rocket blast and return flight".*
It has worthwhile complexity, since it permits stacking of a complete launcher within a day. There is no other example of this for a heavy lift launch system. The open lattice structure of the tower is designed to let shock waves simply pass through, leaving equipment intact, as it has done twice so far.
You say *"I believe the best way to handle the problem is to have a launch tower(s) with separate landing tower(s)"*.
The objective is fast turnaround which avoids transferring hardware from a hypothetical landing tower to a launch tower.
You say: *"The new design would use the best of what they have now and have some kind of channel for flame control".*
solved problem thanks to the deluge system proved out on IFT-2. Flame trenches reached their limits with STS which spat out bricks on every launch.

@@paulwilliams3731 - There have been 11 launches of Starship prototypes. All of which required extensive repairs to the facility and/or site.
SX has the capability to move rockets from one location to another rapidly. The ability to land away from the main launch tower gives less chance for damage to the launch facility and as I otherwise describe above. At some point in the future it will be more useful than it is now.
You may have four rockets getting prepped for launch with only one launch tower to launch from. A landing tower gives you the capability to load and unload and prep for launch without restricting use of the launch tower. It actually improves turn around time rather than hinders it.
Every time you launch and land from the same tower you double the chances for a catastrophic event. An event that could damage all of the facilities and equipment nearby the launch tower that are not necessary to the landing tower.
I don't think the deluge system has yet proven it is entirely successful. I can foresee both a flame control system as well as the deluge system. When there are no burns marks on all of the components you will know it works. When you have to replace key components every time you have a launch you have a problem. The more complex the components the more chances for a failure. Common sense.
When it comes to the design of a flame control system and sound suppression, I suspect SX already has alternative systems in mind. It may not even be a trench. Whatever they come up with will likely be better than what's been used in the past and will be unique to the environment it is used in. Boca Chica, Florida, California, etc.
One thing for sure, they cannot keep replacing the metal protective plates and control arms, complex parts and painting the parts and repairing the concrete after every flight. They certainly can't repair the nearby tanks, wiring, parking lot, administrative facilities and land areas, etc. They have to reduce exposure and minimize the complexity as much as possible.
