Does it take being a famous writer to hatch a plan so elaborate, because this is one of the most impressive plans I've seen be made on the fly.
why didnt he go downstairs. instead of putting this much trouble for her, he could've just make his family see his suicide
@Clara Waldron yes, while also making sure that it's within Harlan's character to be able to do that, which it is.
@ThisIsMyRealName It wouldn't be a good murder mystery without implausibly amazing planning.

@@barisbal7782
Because he needed to be seen way after she left but the "wrong" drug she gave him would kill him in about 5 minutes.
That's why he killed himself as she was leaving (she evem saw him with the knife when she thought to not go through with it).
By the time she came back and posed as him he had already done the deed.
"Ransom, are you back AGAIN already?" 🤔🤔🤨
The great-grandma saw everything!
The idea of a prolific murder mystery writer using his knowledge to cover up his own murder is an idea worthy of an entire movie by itself , and yet this film is so well written it only takes up 15 minutes in the first act. I love this movie so much.
I love how it almost seems like Harlan is ENJOYING his death being a murder-mystery. Like that must have been in his top 5 "Ways to go out" list.
For real
probably the #1 spot on the list, too.
"and then there were none" vibes
This old man is way too intelligent
For a minute I thought he'd fake his death he just to see how they would react.
Nor did he think of a toxicology report lol.
why didnt he go downstairs. instead of putting this much trouble for her, he could've just make his family see his suicide
So is Ransom, Ransom came up with the exact plan in a small amount of time and executed it so well.
Baris Bal No, because his family will ask why he is committing suicide. He can't just lie about depression, because he believes that the autopsy will discover the morphine within him. They will trace back to who gave that and place Marta back onto the suspect list. Now, they wouldn't actually be able to do this, because Harlem turned out to be okay, but this is what he was thinking, and that's why he made his plan to be as it was.
1:50 Marta's foot never touched the windowsill, so when we see the mud later on, we have a hint , that there was someone else! So cool how you find new details every time.

"And this is the tricky part."
"THIS is the tricky part?!" 😂😂
God he’s so great in this scene and this film, such a massive presence throughout despite only being in a handful of scenes. A testament to his incredible talent, RIP Christopher Plummer.
Amen to that
"Beafterfore the carved elephant" XD
That was hilarious
At this point Harlan has already revised his will so that Marta inherits everything. He is therefore likely thinking that should he go to hospital and survive, Marta would be investigated for giving him the wrong medication, and despite it being accidental she could still lose the inheritance, which he has decided his own family does not deserve. So by stopping Marta from calling an ambulance, Harlan is also doing what he believes is necessary to ensure Marta inherits everything.
She actually gave him the correct medication. It was only after she read the label (since Ransom switch liquids) she begins to panic. Only to realize that she gave him the correct medication the whole time. She assumed she gave him a lethal dosage of 100 milligrams of morphine. But it was only LABELED as morphine. It was in fact the other medication. So in the end it backfired at ransom.
The toxicology report would of absolve her of any wrong doing. Thus it would still be ruled as suicide rather than murder.
yep. This movie having Intelligence in every frame
Ripp3r Jac Harlan didn’t know that that’s the whole point of the comment.
@@ripp3rjak934 The toxicology report would absolve Marta of causing Harlan's death. However, because she picked up the vial labelled 'morphine' and gave him 100 milligrams from it, the report would not absolve Marta of negligence. She's a nurse, yet she isn't clearly identifying each vial before administering the contents of them to her patient. What Marta did is at the very least reckless, and in an investigation by a medical ethics board, could still get her in trouble, which could then lead to her losing the inheritance.
@@Ngamotu83 I think it is explained in the movie that what marta did wasn't a mistake but she somehow unintentionally acted on a gut feeling
Like her heart/brain knew it was the right medication
Harlan reacted very quick and analysed a plan to save Marta. If she had given him the wrong dose he wouldn't be able to think like that
Wrong. Being given that amount of morphine in such a short amount of time isn't going to impact your mental faculties like that. The effects were described in the movie if you paid attention.
I never even thought about that... that's a great point......
@@DaWhimsicalOne I didn't knew either, I did a research on the characters and found some information
That's so good and even a foreshadowing that Martha really gave him the real medication!!
@@MaskedMassif injected it absolutely will. It should work in seconds actually.
I love how it makes sense how Harlan could think of such an elaborate plan on the spot, because he's literally a murder mystery author who has to think of plans like this for all his books
This whole scene made me fall in love with Harlan and his relationship with Marta.
RIP Christopher Plummer
I've watched this movie 4 times now. Each time I've rewatched this movie I've picked up on new Easter Eggs, foreshadowing, etc. If you pay attention to details the movie can be quite revealing. Which I really love!
For example, Richard actually exposes himself cheating on his wife by throwing the baseball out the window when looking for the hidden letter that Harlan wrote. Next, later on, as Blanc and Marta are combing the mansion for clues he throws the baseball for the dogs in the yard but instead, they return the broken lattice, leaving the baseball out in the yard. Finally, near the end of the movie we see Linda returning the recovered baseball to her late father's study. There she finds the letter open and thus revealing Richard being a cheater. Full circle. Like a donut hole within a donut...
Also, when Ransom is first revealed to us the dogs are barking at him and jumping on him like crazy. The same testimony we are told that when the dogs were heard barking late at night from when he came back to mess with the medicine bag.
Additionally, just after Marta talks to Blanc at night (during the cigar lighting scene) on the patio, we see Marta go home and we walk in to see her mom watching the old TV show Murder She Wrote.
Finally, you can also see the painting of Harlan change from having a stoic/concerned look (when Marta is looking at it before her interview with Blanc), and then when the mystery is solved at the end of the movie we can see Harlan smirking/smiling.
These are just some of my favorite ones that I noticed! Others include the foreshadowing of the stage prop knife from Harlan and then Ransom stabbing Marta with a "stage prop" knife and the family getting Marta's nationality wrong every time they mention where she is from.
I believe this movie was wonderfully written and shot. I can't wait for the second one to come out!
You had to rewatch this movie in order to pick up on all these obvious things that everyone probably found on the first watch through? These aren't anything super secret or special, anyone with a set of eyes can literally put all of them together. Hell, with at least 2 of these things they're explained literally IN the movie.
@@MaskedMass that’s kinda rude. they took the time to comment and share what they picked up on. you don’t have to essentially shame them for not picking up on these clues the first time around. smh
@@bellamarkarian222 Good for them? Just because they took the time to comment and share what they thought doesn't mean that what they commented and shared was easily accessible information that any 3rd grader could see.

@@bryanalexander4176 It’s terrible writing in the context of the other films
@@bryanalexander4176 yeah its pretty neat
This film absolutely nailed the art of using flashbacks to tell the story, a choice that always has the risk of slowing the movie down. But see how interestingly each flashback sequence provides us new information that pushes the story forward.
RIP Christopher Plummer.
This is masterful misdirection.
Have the audience think that it is all revealed early so they do not try to solve the mystery before the characters do.
In the theatre I was thinking "What a twist it was a mystery after all." A double expectation subversion if you will.
What makes this all even more depressing - she didn’t give him wrong meds. The murderer did switch them, but she was just such a great nurse she still have right dosage to him 😢
In the context "Beafterfore the carved elephant." is and will be for some time the funniest line I've ever heard in a movie.
Rest in Peace to the man, the myth, the legend, Christopher Plummer, aka Harlan Thrombey. 1929-2021.
I can't help but wonder if Agatha Christie hatched the same plan when she disappeared.
Maybe she had it saved in her safe with instructions to send it somewhere till it could be made a film. Kind of like she did with the finale Hercule Poirot story, she wrote that early in her career and had it concealed in her safe not to be published till after her death.
This is based off of many of her books interweaved with a true story. From Christie, it includes "After the Funeral" (The contents of the will, except it's basically reversed directly), "The Clocks" (Somebody asking for money from the killer and being overdosed), "Murder on the Orient Express" (Where the main character survives at the ending through pure coincidence), and a few more. What comes from a true story is the basic layout of Harlem's plan, except that goes perfectly until the police realize the whole story and arrest the person who represented Ransom 8 years later.
nah her disappearance was because of a giant alien wasp...
This man's probably thought of a million ways to murder someone in that house and get away with it while writing his books. He was incredibly well prepared for this situation.
Gutted to hear he passed. Incredibly talented
There were literally hidden easter eggs strewn over the course of this film that really portray how well-directed the plot truly was. In this case, it was mentioned how many minutes (10) Harlan had before he overdosed, yet there were never any signs of bodily breakdown, yet as the audience, we tend to simply dismiss it as we are captivated by the intricate plan he weaves for Marta. Only to see how important it was at the end of the movie with the big reveal.
He was such a giving man.

This man used what he thought the last minutes of his life to creat a plan just to make sure his friend (and her family) would not get into trouble. What a great man !
It sucks that he died for nothing, but I honestly think this is the exact kind of death he would have wanted. He's so animated and completely in his element while planning his own demise. And he got to do it on his own terms, his final mystery game.

Rest In Peace Christopher Plummer. Such a legend that blessed us all with his presence in these films.
Fun fact, the actress who played great nana or Harlan’s mother is in reality ten years younger than Cristopher Plummer
Another example of how much Ransom really is the apple of Harlan’s eye, is that that Ransom came up with an incredibly similar plan before this even happened. He used the same route, even better because he actually avoided cameras, and climbed the same path and even got caught by the same person, all to arrange for Harlan’s death. He and his grandpa thought up the exact same wacky murder mystery right after another completely independent of one another.
RIP Christopher Plummer. Thank you for being a great friend to Marta
I loved how they played with expectations with this movie. Going in knowling lots of classic murder stories I expected Christopher Plummer's character to be the typical rich douchebag but he turned out to be a real bro
Instead, all the suspects were the scum of the earth.
Hilarious and ingenious.
Same! I loved what a cool guy he turned out to be and his father daughter relationship with Marta was so lovely 🥰 his kids, grandkids & daughter in law only cared about him for his money so he was right to cut them all out of the will
Staged his suicide in order to protect her.
Finds out later that she's such a good nurse that she doesn't even need to read the labels. She can tell which medication is which just by FEELING the viscosity level of each liquids. Despite ransom making the switcheroo
Hires a detective in order for him to incriminate Marta despite the toxicology report will come back as Marta giving Harlan the CORRECT medication.
Which back fires completely for Ransom.
Fortunalty for Ransom he gained a CONFESSION out of Marta. Considering she can't lie. If she were to lie that she did NOT confess in the courts. She'd puke.
Fran tries to black mail Ransom. Backfires completely. Burns the toxicology report Fran had. Not knowing that Fran had a back up copy in her (stash)
Marta meets Fran attempts to save her.
Back at the Tromsbey home. Going through Blanc's analysis. Benoit pieces the clues together. From the toxicology report.
Pressures Ransom with assumed evidences that links and suggests that Ransom was the culprit who switched the medication, burned down the toxicology place, tried to frame Marta with the burning of the toxicology evidence and for the killing of Fran.
Marta lied about Fran being alive. Which ultimately led to a confession from Ransom. Thus sparking anger from Ransom which led to attempted murder on Marta's life. Luckily Ransom played life like a game and couldn't tell a real knife from a fake one.
Marta kept the HUMUNGOUS inheritance. However in the end. Marta will most likely support them financially.
Ripp3r Jac cool we watched the same movie
Except Ransom was the one that hired Benoit Blanc, but sure.
@@alecLogan
Yeah Leblanc was suppose to investigate in order to ACCUSE Marta of the "murder" of Harlen that Ransom tried to orchestrate.
Now it makes more sense don't it.
But ended up figuring out that Ransom planned this whole thing all along in order to frame Marta for Harlens murder to invoke the Slayer rule thus making Ransom responsible. Harlens death is indeed suicide but ransom had something to do with it since he attempted murder on his life.
He got the murder charge for killing the helper lady in the end though.
What makes you think Marta is going to support that rotten family financially? What are you basing that on?

Rip legend
For some reason, it’s like Harlan figured out that he was murdered by someone in his family because of the will. He knew that he had to protect Martha right away.
When marta mixed up the medication and she somehow doesn't have the cure, I think he already suspected foul play
An old man like him, no matter how smart, can't make a delicate plan on the fly like that if he was really overdosed, which is an early clue that Harlan was never overdosed in the first place.
THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD
He really did close the book with a flourish;
Harlan voicing Marta's second-guessing herself got a big ol' belly laugh outta me when I saw this.
What's great is that Ransom goes about his own plan the same way Harlan has Marta do it, he really is the most like his Grandfather.
Rest well Christopher 😭
I love Harlan's instant murder plot because his son did say that "The plots just appear in his head at a instant" He's an experienced writer and its been explained that the plots just happen in his mind. Also in the Knives Out series there seems to be characters many characterswith sort of abnormal abilities Marta's she can't lie, the main protagonist for PokerFace can always know if someone is lying, and then you have Harlan who can create murder plots at a instant. Its neat and I love the abnormality of the Knives Out series yet also still keeping the appearance of a Who Dunnit movie.
I write scenario for ttrpgs, and often partake in world building. I can tell you that when inspiration strikes, sometimes everything suddenly exists in your mind, as if you already had every pieces and an event just make them all click together.
Just realizing "Ranson, are you back again already!?" is showing how it was Ranson was already there to start the entire thing.
R.I.P.
This is exposition done right
Harlan saw Marta as his one true family given how broken his real family is.
I always wondered if Harlan new Marta was being set up I seem to me like a lot more minutes past were Harlan should’ve been showing signs of overdose and he seem to have remarkable clarity for someone who we just have an overdose. As a nurse you think she would have picked up on like how come he’s not getting sweaty you’re sick or incoherent. Oh well if she did then there would’ve been no other place to go on a movie I suppose.
J Will nurses are supposed to be able to handle emergency situations. Nervous? Then she should have chosen a different profession
If It were me I would constantly be checking him to see how he was doing.I would be watching him for convulsions I will be watching him for a high fever any of those things sweat in coherency. And seeing none of those things hearing his rational thought I would start to feel relieved and wonder why none of those symptoms are coming are appearing.Course she panicked I gave her the character credit for being a human being however I can’t help but think a person in those circumstances hoping against hope that this person who she thought she injected with a deadly dose of morphine was going to be OK. However, the debate is moot Because without her panic and not doing any of the things I think a person might do under those circumstances they would have been no premise for the movie so that’s that
It's 100 milligrams of morphine. Sysotoms would show almost immediately.
Actually. Marta is such a good nurse that she ended up giving him the correct medication!
She didn't need to SEE the lable she just felt the density of the liquids.
Benoit was the one who brought this to light.
Ripp3r Jac yeah I know I saw the movie
@@celeste7532 You're talking sense... for a senseless situations. Nurses are trained to deal with people dying, not with actively killing people.
