My grandfather (and all his 5 brothers) mined underground for 38 years before he retired. He worked at the Green Valley mine in Vigo County, Peabody underground in Dugger and Ziegler #5 in Murdock IL. It was a great job and he was very good at what he did. The friends he made were friends for life and would do anything for each other at work or at home. When I was 10 he took me on a tour for the Ziegler mine at 500' below. The elevator ride down was quite an experience. It takes a special person to ascend to these depths and do this kind of work. He had 1000 stories about mining. It was his life.
This video shows the stark differences between countries and their safety standards. If this was Australia, quite literally every man in this video would have been fired. The safety standards are what we did 60yrs ago! Blows my mind!

The mine I work in we start mining coal once the methane reaches between 5% and 15% and we reverse the fan so it blows all the dust and gas back into the face while we're on the miner because we are bad ass coal miners.
What kind of mesh are you using for rib support? If you're using steel mesh I highly suggest switching to corrugated plastic mesh. Unlike steel it is fire resistant, anti-static and the corrugation makes it easier to identify loose rocks. They're also very light and easy to handle. There's a company called AROA that sells these and other mine-safety products. You should check them out !
I don't get how a roof bolting shaft with a relatively small plate on the end holds up all that rock? What a vital job and interesting and informative video thank-you miners.
Think of it like this ....stacking 10 sheets of plywood on cinder blocks at each end ...kinds like a table ....they will sag ....however if u were to use screws long Enough to screw all 10 sheets together then place them on the cinder blocks once again the sag won’t occur ....same way with the layers of rock in a mine roof
There are glue sticks that go in before the bolt and when they spin they fill any crevasses and cracks in the rock seams. Which holds the roof in place.

It was a large belt mounted battery with a cord going up to the lamp. Those were the days.

Politically Incorrect yeah but they will only be run until december. The coal is 800 to 1500m under the ground. Because of that, the safety laws and the fact that foreign coal is cheaper the last two mines are being closed at the end of the year. Medium term coal mining is too expensive, but no one knows how it'll be in the future. But Germany has some of the best universities in the world, especially if it comes to mining and resources.

The RWTH Aachen for example has a master program, where you study at 3 different universities and get a degree from all of them. One in Germany (RWTH Aachen), one in the netherlands (Delft) and one in finland (helsinki). Plus it has an international focus and they often do excursions (for example to australia, the us or canada).
Then how are they going to get the materials to make semiconductors which can store and process code in the first place? There is SOO MUCH MORE to life than a computer screen. And that fact will never change. All we will do is find other materials to use which will also require mining and processing. Guys like those seen in this video are exactly why you were able to leave a comment here from your home without the need for pen and paper. When you call ANYONE, thank the guys in mines. Hell, the fact that so many survive into adulthood is due to miners on some level. Don't blindly jump onto the green canoe just yet. There are many holes which just might end up sinking the boat before it makes it away from the dock. We'll get there. But not within the next 20 years. We are still quite a ways off.

How about you offer just one material we can use that does not require mining at some point. It is easy to claim easy from behind a computer/phone screen. Much different when reality is included in the mix. Lastly, companies do not pass laws. We the People vote for officials who work on passing laws. If people want change, people themselves must first initiate said change by who they vote for. And I'm not talking about potus position either. There is MUCH more to reality than merely saying words.

5 years ago ..our safety finally said There is Silica in Rock Dust. And everybody sucked it for years.

The scrubbers on power plants do an amazing job. The stacks are mostly putting out steam and no radiation.

The roof bolts all work together it makes the ceiling more like one piece of rock so the pillars on both sides has an easier time holding it up

The rock dust has no silica in it. You have to clean the filter and as far as the hands on....Well old habits are hard to break.
