    Jason may be the second longest living patient with ALS right behind Stephen Hawking. Not sure how they are defying the odds for that long but it's remarkable to have survived that long with ALS.

      its crazy to think the previous longest living was a world renowned scientist and now the current longest living is one of the best guitarists ever. like what are the odds of that instead of the billion of other people who nobody knows of or have any outstanding talents.

      @@idk9637 The belief behind the long term survival is the brain activity itself. ALS destroys brain neurons as they are sent throughout the body to stimulate movement which is why the patient eventually suffers paralysis. When you consider that Hawking and Jason are extreme examples of high level, mentally active brain functionality, it is believed that this activity is what keeps them sharp and alive beyond the average ALS patient lifespan.

      @@idk9637Maybe their unusually early age of the illness' onset has something to do with it? Jason Becker was barely 20 when he was diagnosed, the median age for an ALS diagnosis is like 60. There's illnesses where age of onset actually factors in the prognosis. We don't really know much about ALS so it could be a possibility.
      But also we just don't know of every single person with this disease, maybe there's someone not famous who's lived with it longer. Although of course, you're right that it is noteworthy that at least two famous individuals with this disease have had such an unusual disease progression. Maybe in a weird way they were "lucky" in their misfortune (or as lucky as you can be in that situation anyway).

    I think that Jason originally wrote the song. As is typical in the studio with demos, the song is re-arranged with parts added and subtracted (on the album track for instance is harmonica and keyboards). On the album credits Dave and Jason are credited of having wrote the song. Both versions are killer. I like the tempo on the demo. Don't forget Bob Rock. I am sure he threw in an idea or 2 as well in the studio. It is a shame what happened to Jason. Joe Holmes is a fine player but, the songs on tour did not sound the same even though Matt and Brett were on that tour. Great track!

    "Jason Becker","Cacophony","David Lee Roth"

    @MasYoNo25 I think ALS targets your CNS, otherwise it starts in the brain and it destroys vital neurons that help you move etc. Chopping it off wouldn't have worked, unfortunately :(

  • @sirdonlee
    @sirdonlee Před 11 lety +2

    ALS strikes the neurons from the brain which never reaches the body. The body will slowly deteriorate because of the lack of stimulus. The mind remains intact and fully functional though. Stephen Hawking is the longest known survivor of ALS. Becker may be the second longest survivor since people affected with it usually pass away within five years.

  • @sirdonlee
    @sirdonlee Před 11 lety +3

    Unfortunately, that wouldn't have done anything. ALS destroys the neurons from the brain that stimulates muscle functions. This is why those afflicted with ALS suffer complete paralysis but their minds remain sharp. Physicist Stephen Hawking is the longest known survivor of ALS. The strange thing about Becker and Hawking is that their conditions haven't really changed in years. Some believe it is because of their very strong and active brain activity.

      MasYoNo25 there are these things in your spine called motor neurons and ALS is when your body attacks then but motor neurons is what produces muscles like when growing up but only 1 man has been cured of ALS after he got a doctor to inject more motor neurons into his spine but they told him that it wouldn’t work but over time he went from wheel chair to cane to no cane and running marathons

  • @irmasil3
    @irmasil3 Před 11 lety

    AlS is a disease of the spinal cord. All the motor nerves practically cant get stimulus from the spinal cord, so the muscles that are attached to them stop working gradually and deteriorate. Nerves from the upper CNS aka brain are fine, hence eye movement is intacked thank God. Its a disease of the athletes, kinda like the spinal cord cant handle the pressure or the stimulus and auto-destroys its self.And that tells us a lot for both Lou Gehrig and Jason. You die because you cant breath.
