- It's time to start talking about some of the terrible things you can do to your own body, like blood doping. We'll start by explaining the structure and function of your erythrocytes, and of hemoglobin, which they use to carry oxygen. We'll follow the formation and life cycle of a red blood cell, including how its levels are regulated by EPO and its signaling molecules. We'll wrap up by looking at how blood doping works and how it is truly a recipe for disaster.

The art in Crash Course is so cute. I mean, never before have I ever wanted to hug a cell.
its clear that you are in med school, since you need more cuteness in your life.
i feel you.
Me 2 hahahaha
I've always wanted to hug a cell, but when I try I end up losing it
😅😅😅😅 ikr?!
Doot Noot n
Although I was watching this in preparation for a test.... it just blew my mind how complex the life of a single component of your body is. Crazy.
angelswave88 subhanallah
is almost as if every single cell of your body is aware
All these videos are great, but this one was dope.
so dope
dope comment
TheFireflyGrave punn intended?
I'd say it was bloody good
I love the way he just chucks in a funny quip or metaphor every here and there, hilarious, makes the lesson all the more interesting and fun to learn
1:54 Sounds like a Shakespearean insult, but with biology.
"You glorified, protein-filled, phospholipid bilayer sac!"
This made me laugh more than it should have
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂
Poor Squidward at 3:20 was good. +1 for your graphics team for keeping it fun by being graphic.
yasss!
+Douglas Gerlach no no no, we have gay people needing therapy because of that little soundless animation.....
Douglas Gerlach ddddddfecce
You're a real musculus sphincter ani externus, eh Dvd Dvd?
A glorified, protein-filled, phosopholipid bilayer sac, y'know?
Watching this makes me want a blood cell plushie...
Dulliest get someone to have their period on a plushie, there ya go..
THIS! @Andrianna Lu
Sometimes when I feel down, I come back to this video and watch Hank say
"THE RED BLOOD CELL GRAVEYARD"
about ten times, then I remember that life is good
I got so emotionally invested in the red blood cell's life and now I'm crying :(
These videos are the only reason I pass any of my Bio Tests.
yes!!! me too!
Facts
WHY IS THIS SO FREAKIN HELPFUL
Like I’m learning more in 10 minutes than I could learn in a week
"Tiny, bloody breath mint"
That made me actually laugh out loud :)
😂😂😂😂😂
*Swishes about a glass of water* "This is your blood."
"And this is your blood..." *dumps in a bunch of cornstarch* "ON DRUGS."
Hey Brother, been doing drugs again
I'm flagging this video for violence... too much blood.
+isectoid youre joking right the video is about blood what the heck did you expect. And a child wont watch this because it is much to complex. you need to be at least 13+ to understand this.
Ben Scholer Yes, I'm joking. I'm not stupid.
+Ben Scholer I think isectoid is joking
in that case its all fine
LOL
i am a child watching this (using my mother's account)
this erytrocytes are incredibly cute!!!!
when He died, I was sad
BLESS YOU!! I can’t imagine my life without crashcourse. Don’t ever stop please
3:19 that animated Squidward looks super cool, and you might wanna take him to the hospital.
wow this is great! now that I actually follow and always watch the newest episodes I was wondering about some stuff with red blood cells and before I even get to look it up it gets explained in the next video! If only schools were that effective and entertaining...
Great job everybody!
I loled at the *Red Blood Cell Graveyard* scene, poor old cell ...lol
I love the crash course episodes. It helps me learn. If it is possible, please make more
I'm amazed too, especially with his speech rate!
Ok, had to pause to type this. That image of Squidward at 3:20? WOW. That's pretty graphic. Wasn't expecting that.
chazz30000 You are mad. Is not big surprise.
Alan Gebhardt I paused there too, they could have had him donating blood or something
chazz30000
Yeah, nice try. I'm not ashamed that I find a character with their hand cut off and spurting blood a little disturbing. Especially for a family friendly educational series.
You did get the tumblr part right, though. I love that website.
Alan Gebhardt I'm offended that you found this graphic.
liampgc
Let's be honest, for this show it's pretty graphic, you know, with Squidward screaming and all.
For rest of the internet it's nothing but I agree it felt a little out of place here.
Inbefore you're offended. I'm not offended cause you know, the internet and stuff.
I probably would've failed my assignment without you guys... keep up the good work❤️
THanks for being my favorite thing on youtube. I recommend you every chance I get. Chemistry, Biology, World History, Economics, American History, Astronomy, my personal favorite Big History, and the rest... I love them all. THanks for them all :)
I have been *trying* to work on a research paper in regard to blood during decomposition stages. I suggest a CrashCourse discussing how blood 'dies' when a person dies. There is very little information on this subject
I love these crash courses! Thanks for making them!
your videos always help me out in college in nursing thanks so much and keep going!
Hey there! Your videos are truly amazing, helping and are really comprehensive...Please make a video on BLOOD TYPES AND RH GROUPING..that would be a great help!!
with out this channel i would have probably failed my finals for collage
nico arias yup! me too
nico arias college or collage?
nico arias. College*. You passed..?
"with out"?
that was a good journey for me to understand how the cardiovasc works. I am currently prepping to write about Viagra, so now I understand the big picture behind the science working in this specific medicine. Thanks, CC.
Thank you for having this channel. Needed this to go over some things before Quiz. 👍🏽👍🏽
thank you all those on patreon i really appreciate you guys. These videos are awesome
You made me laugh when said, "The hemoglobine run away naked in your blood" I watched like 4 times for this sentence ... So funny ...
This is one of your funniest videos so far! Very enjoyable and educational. Thanks!
thanks for teaching me random stuff bro! was bored and came here just in time.
love this videos! Quality, content and humour are amazing!
Wow, I thought that this was a really "standout" video in this series. Maybe it was just my personal interest in the content or some extra work on the part of your team. Whatever it was, thank you so much for a thoroughly enjoyable video!
Wow, awesome video. So many terms, can't remember them all, but we get the general picture very well.
I love these videos! Especially since history and science are my favourite subjects xD
the early erythroblast is so cute that it made me giggle and rewatch the development of an erythrocyte just to see all the cuteness. props to the animation team :) 5:00
I love how no matter or energy is wasted in most things in nature :).
I love learning how our body functions!! I felt sorry for the red blood cell that got eaten.
great video you make learning fun and nourishing at the same time which is very special . keep on doing that.
i love your videos! thanks they help me understand concepts much better! cheers

Thanks you! This helps me when I am in class and It makes learning so much fun.
Good job on hematopoesis. That was much better than than the errors I found in last weeks episode. Congrats on a successful well written episode.
OMG this video is so informative and helpful!!!
I love the little Strong Mad figurine on Hank's desk, quite appropriate ;-)
GREAT. I CAN ACTUALLY LEARN HERE. Why did they not teach science and biology so effectively, back in the day?
I have binge watched so many crash course videos and I feel quite confident when I say; your hair is different in this one
I love these videos. Thank you!
loved Rasputin on the shoulder when speaking of hemophilia 😆
I love watching your presentations!!!😍

7:17
That just cracked me up.
This is helping pass anatomy ! 😁 thanks
thanks that was helpful
and i want an ep about platelets
This reminds me of when Hank explained erythropoiesis while giving blood during an old Vlogbrothers video :)
Thank you, for this video.
Hey Crash Course,
I research hemoglobin based oxygen carriers. I enjoyed the show, however modern research on the subject suggests that hemoglobin cannot be put directly in the blood because it would extravasate through the capillary wall and 1)scavenge NO and 2) cause oxidative stress. loved the show!
okay with the erythroblast chucks out the nucleus that is just the cutest little sound ever
These videos are AWESOME !!!
So, blood dopers poop more?
Thanks, CrashCourse.
perfectly explained jst awsm..... thnx a lot sir...
Hank is so saltyyy in this. Love it.
YAY!!!! I FINALLY underdtand the notes my prof gave me!! Thank you so much~♥ I want to hug you guys * squeeze~*
Brilliant as always crash course
Excellent episode!
7:06 AAAHHH WHY ITS SO CUTE Q-Q I DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE 2 MILLION OF THOSE ADORABLE THINGS DIE EVERY SECOND
Hematopoiesis is not the process of forming RBCs, it's the process of blood formation in general. Erythropoiesis is the process on RBC formation specifically.
Another awesome video!!!
could you please make some videos explaining the wide world of autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, MS, crohns, neuromyelitis optica, etc..) there is a whole world of people experiencing these things that would like to have some it illuminated in the way you do.
1:03 I like the fact that we have a little bit of Weird Al in all of us . . . XD
Love it!! thank you!!!
fun fact, "The intense color of the protein stems from the extended conjugation of the protoporphyrin ring, not the iron, as is commonly misconceived." - B.Reeder 2010, The Redox Activity of Hemoglobins: From Physiologic Functions to Pathologic Mechanisms
Im doing GSCEs but thanks for the extra info
Can you do a video about how hyperbaric oxygen therapy with the pressure and oxygen helps heal your tissues etc
SO interesting! Yay!
Could you please do a series on crash course physics?
you should make merch for that plush fish. if you agree plz spread it around it around to other parts of the channel
Tiny, bloody breath mint -- Oh Hank, you are too funny!
this episode is dope
Thanks ❤️
thank you for reminding me why you're awesome
Thanks Hank
Thank you
There is something else about blood that's really cool and was not mentioned for some strange reason. Mature avian RBCs still have nuclei.
Thank you very informative
