    Congratulations, you are about the 13th owner of this truck. That yellow plate with BR-HZ-47 is the Dutch license plate (NL = Netherlands). I can send you the Dutch history of the truck, it is a 2.5 MB pdf file. Those RDW papers you found were the last government inspection report. From 2009 tot 2015 this truck was used to transport fair attractions. If you want a real cool Scania, try to find a Scania Longliner. It has a kind of apartment on board.

    A tip about tipping the cab: Always remove all objects in the back of cab. Be sure the doors on the cabinets on back wall is secured. The cab tilts almost 85 degrees! Almost vertical!. Everything inside the cab WILL fall down onto the front window... (don't ask how I know...) AND the first time tipping the cab : it's always scary when the weight of cab tilts over the tippingpoint. This happens at around 70 degrees. So the last 15 degrees the cab is "freefalling". There is nothing you can do to stop it when it first goes over. A lot of weight on theese top-line cabs.

    Really amazing to see this semi truck over in The States now, I remember this unit from the yearly fairground nearby in the 2010s.
    Vermolen is a Dutch family active in the travelling fairground business for more than a century and they own quite a lot of rides ranging from the nostalgic carrousel to modern adrenalin rides.
    They travelled to fairgrounds all over the Netherlands but also Belgium, Germany and even further away.
    The truck is rough looking now, but I don't think it deteriorated that much when it was in the Vermolen family, the owners of fairground rides do care very well for their trucks, they were their shop window.
    Give it some care and TLC, getting the parts may be hard in North America.

    The truck is from Juni 10, 1997 (according the Dutch licence plate) This truck is used for transporting the equipment of a mobile fair company. Most of the mobile fair companies use trucks which had done a lot of miles (kilometers in Europe) and therefore are cheap to buy. The mobile fair companies don't travel a lot and also not long distances. Also the fifth wheel is used a lot in Europe we have lots of trailers. FYI the text "Schousteller Betrief" is a German tekst. These trucks don't have to pay roadtax (Maut) in Germany

    • @TheDiner50
      @TheDiner50 Před 11 měsíci

      Yea fifth wheel is almost essential as soon as we are talking about anything but just a box lorry. Oversized cargo van. Even with a cargo bed or a box on the back axle your most likely still pulling a dolly behind you with a fifth wheeler on it. It is a very short trailer with a fifth wheeler on it And in turn you can hook a full on EU trailer on it. Or even just strait up running a link trailer that connect to a lorry with just a fifth wheeler on it. It accomplishes the same thing in practice. Just depends on the lorry/truck fleet usage.
      Never seen a cargo box single axle that also pulls a wagon. And ontop of it being a truck/lorry with a fifth wheeler??? What a odd creature this was in its past life. It was pulling a wagon trailer. When nowadays we are mostly running the USA style trailers on a dolly trailer that in turn connects to a lorry/truck without a fifth wheeler built onto it. That is 3 vehicles in the road train. 3 different registered vehicles. A wagon is a complete vehicle that do not need a dolly. A trailer needs a fifth wheeler connection. Agen it is complicated but point is that fifth wheeler is VERY common in EU. Even in the lands of Scania. Maybe just less common to have it on the lorry/truck. Still plenty of them exist.
      Agen with licenses we in Sweden run up to 25.25 meter long vehicle trains without a fifth wheeler on the turck. Behind it you just connect a wagon trailer OR a dolly trailer since that would give you that fifth wheeler to pull a truck trailer. A full sized EU trailer usually then end you up at 25.25 meter long. With the normal accepted max limit being 24m. But there are plenty of trucks with just a fifth wheeler all over EU and Scandinavia. You need to shorten a full size truck without a fifth wheeler OR the trailer needs to be shorter to fit in 24meters. Why it is far more common to get the exemption for 25.25meters transport.
      You can also run a link trailer from a fifth wheeler truck and reach up to 25.25m or less if you need. But link trailer trucks are a bit more rare of a vehicle on the road. Useful to ditch the link part or the trailer for tight places to load and unload. And still keep the capacity of any other vehicle combination. But links are the rare one for sure. Nothing else.
      Accepted weight limits are general up to 64 000kg hole road train weight. And with some licenses up to 74 000kg. Just rare and limited to special road ways and bulk transport of wood etc. It is hard to get and experimental. Still with exceptions you can get the green light for more ofc with the right paperwork. Military for example.

    As in sure many people have already pointed out, the majority of our trucks DO have 5th wheels on them, this truck was what you'd call a showman's truck (alteast in the UK) you can haul loads in configurations that aren't usually legal, but for circuses/fairgrounds, they can obtain a licence/permit (I believe) that allows them to bypass that.
    Usually you'd have 1 of 2 configurations of trucks and trailers
    1. A semi truck unit with a 5th wheel and a trailer
    2. A semi box truck with a nearly equal length trailer pulled by drawbar or dolly
    (Both of these configurations being limited to a length just under 19 metre's, around 62 feet)
    The picture you showed of it driving in Europe is close to the 2nd configuration in setup, but alot longer, because of the showman's load he is hauling.
    Just to go off on a tangent, showman's trucks are some of the only examples of more than one trailer being hauled in the UK, it's usually something like a truck with a box on the back, pulling a ride, then pulling a caravan, which is a cool sight to see when usually we're limited to a just under 19m configuration for both of our configurations.

    • @sgxbot
      @sgxbot Před rokem

      there is a 3rd type thats similar to the semi box truck. its a truck with a container chassis installed on it that takes containers or special swap bodies that fit on this chassis. most of the time they also have a trailer that does the same. thats the more common one if you see a semi box truck with a trailer. real semi box trucks with a fixed box usually are smaller 12t trucks like the scania p250 or the mercedes atego. they also tend to not use trailers as much

The gearbox is so easy to shift once you learn HOW to do it correct. You don't need to use all the low range gears, you can start on 1 and go directly to 3. The pull up the ring on the shifter and choose gear number 4. ( Same position as gear number 1) . Then up to 5. And then 6. The switch is the split button on the side of the gear shift knob. With a trailer with full cargo weight connected you use the split on 5th and 6th gears. In steep uphill on 4th gear.

    The name Scania is latin for Skåne which is the southern most province of Sweden.
    The logos and artwork depicting the head of a griffin is part of the Skåne´s coat of arms and dates back to about year 1430.
    SAAB, short for and translated to Swedish aeroplane AB (LLT) also uses the griffin as a logo and some Saab cars even had it as specs, ie the Saab 9000 griffin.

There was a dealer/ importer in New York or Pennsylvania back in the mid 80s who ran them in their household moving fleet. A poor product launch and uninformed dealers led it to come to an abrupt end. This is one of the reasons Volvo bought out White/GMC and Renault industries Mack trucks. Volvo now own Renault and Mack. As mentioned this 144 14L 4 series 530 was operated in the Netherlands before being imported. If it was used here as a fairground vehicle it probably didn’t need to conform with interstate DOT regulation as it wasn’t for hire. If it’s over a certain age it may be exempt also.
    Check out British and European truck shows, lots of Scania’s old and new to see. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇸

    In the 1990's cars with automatic gearboxes were still pretty rare here in Europe. We were used to manual shifting. And cars, farm tractors and almost every truck had synchronized gearboxes. So driving a big truck was pretty much as easy as driving a small car, except for the difference in size.
    Using the clutch is something we just do without even thinking about it.
    Today a big part of these new big trucks are automatic.
    The step from only having driven automatic to start driving a truck with an unsynchronized gearbox must be pretty big? At least it's good that those gearboxes can't feel pain when novices torture them :)
