    As someone who likes the sound of certain pedals but doesn't actually understand what is happening behind the scenes, I massively appreciate the in depth explanation and visual aids to demonstrate how these sounds are generated. I'm going to sub for that reason because I haven't seen many other channels willing educate viewers, they mostly just do 3 minutes of explanation and 17 minutes of milquetoast jams.

  • @markhammer643
    @markhammer643 Před 3 lety +2

    One of the features that made the original Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble so desirable for many was that it used a different LFO waveform for the vibrato than it did for the chorus; employing a more sinusoidal wave. For whatever reasons, when our attention is focused on pitch variations, sine waves just sound more musical and pleasing to the ear. Some of the best chorus effects are what often get referred to as "multi-phase". These are often found in string synths or other 80's analog synths. Instead of sweeping just one bucket brigade chip, these employ two or more, each with their own LFO, unsynchronized with the others. It's a richer sound, whose pitch wobbly is not quite as overt as when there is but one delay chip. The random waveform on the Julianna accomplishes *some* of what having several unsynced LFOs do, but perhaps not all.
    One of the features I generally build into any chorus pedals I make is a bass cut. For vibrato, it doesn't matter so much, but sometimes, especially if using with a bass, you want the pitch wobble to be less obvious. Reducing the bass content pushes the pitch-wobble of the note fundamental a little more to the background, perceptually, while still preserving the swirl.
    Most flangers, chorus and phasers can be turned into vibrato units, simply by lifting the dry signal and using only the wet signal. The problem is that a great many such pedals use electronic switching that cancels the *effect* by removing the wet signal, whether time-delayed or phase-shifted, instead of completely bypassing the circuit. So, if one lifts the dry signal, when you go to "bypass" mode, you not only have no effected signal, you have no dry signal either. There ARE fixes for this, just not simple ones.

    Chorus is my favorite effect, well, after distortion (if you consider distortion an effect).
    My personal favorite application of chorus was in Iron Maiden's records Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. The chorus sound there is lush and full, really giving impact and magnitude to the guitars, while really making those guitars sing.
    And in general, I'm a sucker for 80's style chorus on guitars, clean and dirty.

    Colin, I have to tell you my Edinburgh story. I flew over from the States to Manchester to do a conference. It turned out that they only needed me for a couple of hours, so I took the train up to Edinburgh because I have some distant relations there. By the time I got there it was 10 o’clock in the evening. It was pitch black out. I walked up the street from the train depot to the main avenue. I wanted to catch a cab. But there wasn’t one in sight. There was a little pub there so I stepped in to try to get some help hailing a cab. The room was filled with old gaffers who fell all over themselves trying to help me. Alas, as a “Yank,“ I could not understand a word they said. I finally smiled and waved thanks to them and stepped out of the pub. There was a cab standing at the curb right in front of me. Some kind-hearted soul must’ve recognized my dilemma and called it for me. Best trip I’ve ever had.
    PS: I’ve never seen a more beautiful country in my life. Heaven must look a lot like the green of Scotland. Knobs on “11.”

At first I was drawn to the JHS Emperor V2 which is very similar to the pedal you demoed here (it's a chorus/vibrato but with some different controls) (also has a penguin graphic which is a big reason for wanting one😅), but after a while it started to seem like a more complicated pedal than what I wanted. Then I discovered the MXR Micro Chorus which falls more along my simplistic ways of playing. However after watching your video, I find myself going back to the Emperor. So my question is this: As someone who really just wants a chorus pedal for the chorus effect, which pedal would you recommend? Thanks and keep up the great content!

    I'm an idiot, but could someone, please explain to me how to hook up two stereo pedals into one effects loop of an amp, as, it appears he has here.
    Where are the two jacks into the Julianna coming from? And how do you connect this rig?

    Would you recommend this pedal for bass, or would I find a better bass-oriented pedal somewhere else? Would you have a recommendation? Thanks for the channel, btw.

    good to see that walrus is going stereo. they lost a slo sale to me because it is mono. maybe they will make a slo-er which is stereo. I only bought 2 pedals this year, a zoom ms70 and an oceans 12, both full stereo. i want to support walrus because it is made in usa, but anything i buy time-based has to be full stereo from now on, so i can use them with my synths too, like the oceans 12 or zoom . nice to see you working with sweetwater. my wallet hates sweetwater. finally, speaking of weird pedals, i have an 18v deja-vibe. that thing is special, really warm and organic, and part of my analog chain. It has a real live analog light bulb inside lol

      I think stereo is a luxury most consumers don't need to pay extra for. With the mono Julia being such a huge success for them they'll have had the confidence to do a stereo version secure in the knowledge there will be demand.
      I think it will be a deluxe feature for the upgraded version for more of their pedals if this one takes off.

      @@ScienceofLoud i sure hope so. for me, i save money because i can use the stereo pedals for everything. stereo outs also equal instant chain splitters and i can build really complex effects chains for ambient guitar.

    I don't like to think of chorus as expanding the sound; I like to think of it as making a sound less perfect, and more detailed. Maybe it's different for me because I use keyboards.

    I've got a TATA. I prefer "Medium" thickness picks, but why would someone prefer the "Heavy" thickness picks and what style of music is best for the standard pick sizes?

    • @ScienceofLoud

      I have covered this extensively in past videos. I'm not sure there is much more I can add to the discussion on why thick picks are the superior choice.

      A lot of that era of Priest had modulation on the distortion. Painkiller is full of it, its wicked good sound but not instantly obvious it's there.

    Very interesting but for me the ramp function is a miss, having to keep pressed the pedal; it'd have been much useful to have it permanent, like two presets, also by ditching the tap tempo that I found pretty useless for a chorus.

    Would a leslie speaker effect be considered a chorus?

    • @efa666
      @efa666 Před 3 lety

      More of a phaser I think.

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  Před 3 lety +2

      Not exactly. Leslie labelled their two speeds as chorus/vibrato but the true sound is beyond either.
      Early attempts to replicate it in analogue electronic circuits followed the phaser structure (think the uni-vibe).
      Truth is that rotating speakers are simply too complex a sound to be accurately recreated without spinning speakers and drums.
      Chorus/vibrato can get you in the ballpark though without having to heft a massive cabinet around.
