Igbo people have a lot of work to do sincerely. Igbos has been dismantled with unbelievable divisions. Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and other Igbo groups must work so hard to unite all Igbos. It's really sad to see an Igbo person to deny his/her originality and identity. We are one Igbo and one people.

It's absolutely true. We have Ikwerre family living in uk. They speak Igbo and never deny their Igboness. Their grandmothers carry biafra for head. If you say anything against Igbo/biafra, the Ikwerre grandmother will fight you with everything in her.

One thing I will tell people of the riverine areas of Delta and Rivers (Igboid people), "Don't allow strangers remind you of who you are". It might not be a pleasant one. Benin people are very hospitable but know you guys are Igbo and share historical ties with the Hinderland Igbos. In fact most of you guys left from the Hinderlands and expanded toward the coast hundreds of years ago.

It might be true if Omoku people say that they come from the present day bini which was formally called Idu Land or Igodomigodo before the Yoruba prince Oraminyan invaded the land and established the Oba dynasty and changed the name to Ile-binu which is now called bini. That place was inhabited by many Igbos,Edos Ishan and the Ijaws who reside in the creeks along the gelegele river, but when the war between Idu Land and the Yoruba Prince Oranmiyan who was very dangerous and Opressive happened many indigenous Idu people fled through the river some found refuge in Ogba land or Omoku and some fled to some part of present day Bayelsa state. Eze Chima was an Igbo leader in Idu land present day Bini, Agbo, Uturu, Ika before the war of Idu na Oba that scattered the people.

@@brightnwadike7565 yes, I know what you are saying might be true. But what they are saying is that their roots is in Benin which imho doesn't add up. For instance it is like Igbos in Lagos, most Igbos in Lagos were born and breed in Lagos and some haven't visited their ancestral home in their life time. Then something happens in Lagos and their is a mass exodus of Igbos back to the homeland. Most Igbos that go back will know their villages to go back to while a minority might be lost and be assimilated anywhere.
Then hundreds of years later they ask the descendants of Igbos that left Lagos about their origin and now they point to Lagos has their origin and give an abstract reason like the introduction of "Aso ebi" cloth in Traditional marriage in Igbo land. Not knowing that it is a borrowed culture like how other cultures borrowed "Omugwo".

To avoid this kind of confusion that is in River State or the so-called Niger delta, the larger or stronger ethnic groups suppose to incorporate or assimilate the smaller minority groups to avoid this kind of confusion and disunity which is not helping the people of the region because of not being united. There are two many minorities in the entire Niger delta region. The Igbos are the larger ethnic group closer to these minorities but because of Igbo' s democratic and egalitarian tradition they failed to incorporate these minorities to build a stronger and United region that will be beneficial to everybody. You can't see this kind of confusion in Europe now. In Europe the larger groups always incorporate or assimilate the smaller minorities.

This failure in leadership of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo , has today given birth to Igbo citizenry outside of Southeast { South-south ] openly denying their Igboness . This is unfortunate !

This identity crises don too much! These people doesn't know the difference between language and dialect,is it because they are in River State? Should I say that they are stupid or ignorant, they have villages that indicate the Igbo towns they came from i heard one of them mention umuobosi village, they still don't know their ancestry.
What is Ọhanaeze ndị Igbo doing?
It's time to start holding seminars in the Igbo villages of Delta and Rivers at least to teach them the difference between language and dialect, and also to introduce the teaching of Igbo language.
Their being under Benin kingdom in the past does not mean they were Edos.
Even if there were those who came from Benin it shouldn't change the identity of the land, they can return to wherever they came from when they like. Afterall many Igbo people live in Benin city but that has not changed the identity of the town.
Their southeast counterpart (Ọhanaeze ndị Igbo) should make sure that Igbo language is taught in their schools. The absence of Igbo language subject in their schools contributed at least 40% of their identity crises.

When the Benin kingdom grew into an empire,it conquered many Igbo communities especially those in the west of the Niger River and brought them under it's rule, they even crossed the river and conquered Onitsha and intended to go further but they have to fight Nri empire because those communities had already come under Nri kingdom,so they retreated.
It was during the arrival of the missionaries and the colonial masters that the Benin empire started losing it's grips on those Igbo communities.
Should being under Benin empire mean Benin origin? The answer is"no".
Their old ones are not even helping matters, that's why they have been battling with identity crises, especially the younger generation because if you tell them that they're from Benin, they will be seeing Igbo in themselves ,it then becomes a puzzling crisis.

The influence of the Bini kingdom on western Igbo was mostly in the exchange of culture and religious rights. As the fame and influence of the Bini monarchy grew, some of these western Igbo adopted and fashioned their own monarchy in that mold. Of course, it was not a one way street; the Bini use a four market day system that is similar to the Igbo system, Nri and Aro priests had extended their spheres of influence to Bini. Indeed, sometimes Bini had tried to levy taxes in some of these areas but were not very successful in doing so. Agbor-Bini wars had occured many times between both kingdoms. Aboh also had a formidable kingdom in the area. Suffice to say, Bini never got anywhere close to invading Onitsha. The Bini connections we see in Onitsha are those that were culturally borrowed by proto-Igbo people like Eze Chima(an Nri priest) who were migrating back to Igbo land from Bini following protracted crises and wars that had broken out in Bini( Agha Idu na Oba as told in folklore). There's a collection of Igbo in the SS and SE that trace their migration from Bini, but these were proto-Igbo people on a reverse migration eastward. Till date there are indigenous Igbo(Ika) people in Igbo-Akiri(Igbanke) and other areas that share the same local government with Bini people in Edo state.

@@brainoverbrawn3404 I have colonial pictures of Onitsha Obi and omumu women leader in anioma aniocha and both had Igbo beads and not Bini beads. The Obi had cow fan and not the Bini king sword. Today in anioma and even anambra people who do not know anything of Bini wear Bini beads and carry Bini royal sword. It like a Bini person wearing our red cap, ozo spear, or epke cloth just because he was told it is powerful. Yet these people do not understand that to wear an Ozo cap, you have to be an Ozo royalty. And to carry a Bini royal soward is for a Bini king or royalty - some pictures showed ordinary people carrying it around anioma and was not given to them by Bini.
All the story of Bini conquering even anioma areas of Ika is mainly fantasy , story, marketing, etc like oduduwa or eze nri climbing down from the sky with a rope.
UK also wanted to use Bini to control anioma and even Igbo outside anioma as puppet after taking him to Calabar as a form of indirect rule. UK always use a minority against majority to impose control knowing the minority has no real power.

However, people should not extrapolate from this to arrive at erroneous conclusions, like the fictitious tale above about Bini conquering Onitsha(Onicha Mmili). Bini came in contact early with the Portuguese, were able to acquire guns and became more hostile to their neighbors. They got a head start in that regard, but it was only a matter of time before others acquired guns too and leveled the playing field. The famous Benin moat was built around Benin city in ancient times to fortify it from aggressors. Clearly, there were other people bringing the fight to Benin.

@@brainoverbrawn3404 Onitsha was defeated and brought under Benin empire, till recent times Obi of Onitsha still pays tribute to ọba of Benin.
As for the Agha Iduu na Ọba, Iduu was an Igbo community located in present day Edoland, that time there was nothing like Benin or Edo ethnic group.
The Ọba (a Yoruba king)invaded Iduu and it's neighbouring communities, many of them fled eastward, Onitsha history has it that some people came from Iduu, these people were actually Igbo refugees fleeing from the Ọba. As they fled they carried the news (story) with them. The Yorubas took over the land and installed a Yoruba man as the king, that is Ọba
The Igbos who did not flee mixed up with the Yoruba people who later migrated to that area as a land belonging to their Ọba.
The mixture of Igbo and Yoruba and perhaps other language group gave birth to Edo ( Bini).
But, the Igbos maintained their calendar along the line the Yorubas became used to it.
Because of the news of Agha Iduu na ọbá which has spread in Igboland especially Anambra and the mightiness of the newly formed kingdom which is today known as Benin, the Igbo started calling the kingdom"Igodomigodo".

    • @brainoverbrawn3404
      @brainoverbrawn3404 Před 2 lety +1

@@ndubuisiezeoye2099 So, your conclusion is that since Obi of Onitsha paid tribute to the Oba of Benin, they must have defeated and conquered them. Do you know there was a time every King that ascended the throne in Bini had to physically go to Nri to pay tribute as part of the coronation process, and this is a practice that supposedly continued even into the 1940s?
Did the Nri Kingdom have to conquer Bini for such to happen? No. But, it's safe to say their sphere of influence had reached to Bini at the apex of the Nri hegemony. In like manner, the Western Igbo kingdoms that emulated the Bini monarchy established relationships and interactions with Bini to legitimize their thrones. There were times many Igbo groups and even non-Igbo alike paid tribute to Arochukwu. Thriving kingdoms could exert such influence on others without having to physically conquer them.
It is a wild leap to conclude that Onicha paying tribute to Bini is evidence of Bini invading and conquering Onicha. There is no history anywhere of Bini conquering Onicha. No stories of any events, battles or personalities involved to acknowledge such an episode in the history of Onicha. At best, some in Onicha suggest they migrated to Onicha from Bini, as migrants, not as a conquering army.
To the latter part of your write up, I'll say the founding history of Igodomigodo remains murky, to the best of my knowledge. It would seem that the Igbo were already in contact with and coexisting with the Edo people(Bini, Esan and others) before the incursion of the Yoruba which caused a lot of strife. Did the Obas descend from the Ogiso dynasty or is the Oba dynasty a parallel dynasty that evolved with the Yoruba incursion and eventually rivaled the indigenous Ogiso dynasty? There are people in Bini that are on either side of the argument. It would be merely speculative for me to conclude that the Edo people are a hybrid offshoot that resulted from the amalgamation of the Igbo and Yoruba. I can't say that conclusively. I know that all three groups(Igbo, Edo, Yoruba) belong to the same language cluster, so it could be inferred that all were the same people at some point in antiquity.

Time has changed language. Languages can be lost over a period of time. People can't forget culture but language can be corrupted. Note this
