- Welcome to a new video in my Victorian sewing series. This time I will be sewing a blouse/shirtwaist from 1897. The outfit is almost complete! I will show you had to make a backslide on a blouse, how those dramatic sleeves were made, and I will be sharing some of my insights into historical sewing. This project will be mostly made on my antique Singer threadle sewingmachine from 1910, so let’s get sewing!

BTW love the big puffy sleeves. I've seen somewhere there exist some armatures that would help to keep them up and puffy all the time.

Oh, The trick Or Key For the sleeves, Is starch. The best modern brand is "Faultless" - The old fashion way is the corn starch bath.

To achieve the correct look for the sleeve, you're after, historically, one option was to make 'sleeve bags', which were permanently inset into the upper arm as an extra feature of the lining, in order to puff out the sleeve, and stop them deflating and drooping. I'm sure there's a tutorial somewhere on YT on the 'how to' process, but can't remember where. Anyhow, you'll definitely find more info if you chose to further research the topic and decide to tackle the sleeve issue. Good luck and have fun with your projects!
Hi Ronda, Thank you for your input. With this blouse there is no space to use sleevesupports as the liningsleeve is very fitted, but would love to try to make a pair for a different top. Thank you for watching :)
You could definitely sandwich some lightweight stiffener such as a nice cotton organdy that'll maintain its stiffness through washes, or tulle if you'd like, could work too. The shirt sleeves would look stellar with some organdy though, for sure ❤️ @@gabriellehelenacouture6935
2 years late, but oh that shirt came out so nice!!! I saw you mention elsewhere in the comments that you might consider digitizing the pattern to sell. Did you ever end up doing that? I'm working on a cosplay with this style of sleeve and I'm having the hardest time finding any sort of premade shirt or even proper patterns to make it myself, and I'd love to purchase it, if you did release it!
I haven't yet, but I did release some other patterns in my Etsy shop The silvered past. I'll put it on my to do list ;)

I love the sleeves but you lost me. Have never attempted this before but I could not see the shape you were cutting out because it was white maybe and not sure on where you were stitching either. Do you have an other video’s where you take the time to show step by step stages with views of the whole sleeve and where you are sewing. Where were the basting stitches, what was the purpose of them in relation to the pattern. The end result was lovely though. I have Victorian dolls I want to make outfits for.
