Pioneer DDJ-FLX6-GT Review: All About MERGE FX! | DJ Controller Demo

- The DDJ-FLX6-GT is a 4-channel DJ controller which is USB-powered and driverless, supporting Rekordbox, Serato, Virtual DJ, and Traktor. While the original FLX6 was advertised as being for Rekordbox and Serato only, it now supports Virtual DJ and Traktor as well.
Pioneer’s marketing makes it look like the GT model does something the original doesn’t, but that’s not actually true. The GT is, quite simply, an FLX6 with a different paint job and slightly upgraded jog wheels. Therefore, I’m essentially reviewing both models, here.

The graphite grey finish does look nice (though it’s a lighter color in person than in photos), and the jog wheels have a new rubberized finish. The wheels are impressively-sized: they are the same size as the ones you’d find on a CDJ-3000 (or Pioneer DDJ-1000).
The FLX6 is designed around the concept of Merge FX, which are transition-based FX that help you get from one song to another regardless of BPM or genre. To the top-right of each deck is a rather chunky knob with a button in the middle, used for engaging these FX.
Jog Cutter is my least favorite thing about the DDJ-FLX6. This allows you to move the jog wheel back and forth between 6 defined sections, and “a professional scratch effect will be applied to the last Hot Cue or playback position you used on that deck”.
There are 10 different scratch patterns which can be accessed by simply moving the playhead position (on the jog wheel’s display), and when you lift your hand, the track will continue to play as normal.
In practice, I found Jog Cutter to sound unnatural, and was not fun to use.
The FLX6 and FLX6-GT are great options for DJs who like mixing between wildly different styles or tempos, and need a way to get from point A to point B. In this sense, Merge FX could be a lifesaver. My only concern there is that you may become reliant on them, only to not have them when it comes time to upgrade your gear.
Generally speaking, this is a sturdy and handsome controller which offers a lot of features for the price. It makes for an excellent rekordbox or Serato controller. I’m less enthused about using it for Virtual DJ or Traktor.
Being a midrange controller, there are compromises. For example, there are no external inputs, nor balanced XLR outputs on the device. There are some features found on other controllers (like the DDJ-1000) that won’t be found here, like a track skip button or tension adjustments.
But with enormous jog wheels, the unique Merge FX feature, and full control over four decks… this is one of my top recommendations for a DJ controller at this price point. - Věda a technologie
Nice overview. I learned beat matching on a DDJ 400, a controller I liked very much, and wanted 4 channel to try more advanced mixing and beat matching. The limited outputs on this model are fine because I only stream sets, so the plug and play at clubs ..stuff.. I don't care about at all. I've used this for 4-5 sets. I don't notice any "slider noise" that I would occasionally notice on the DDJ 400. I never use the merge effects, and when I do learn scratching I don't plan on automation for that either. So just the 4 channel and flexible software choices are the main benefit for me. Happy overall coming from the DDJ 400. Another consideration when buying - this model was actually in stock to purchase at the time. Some of the other 4 channel pioneer boards were not.
Well done!❤🎉 you done on of the best demo about flx6 gt. I purchase one of this model two months ago because I need it for live stream Mixing. Many videos on CZcams talk mostly negative about this controller but you guys explain all the cool features of it and you balance the things and explained all things nice. A big thank you guys!❤🎉🎉🎉
In means of outputs, you can still use an external audio device connected to your laptop, I do this all the time with my ddj 400, just use the audio device of the ddj 400 for the headphones and a Motu M2 as audio device with balanced outputs.
Thanks for deep and useful rewiev! 👍🏻
This is the best review i ever seen in all youtube. THANKS!!
Wow, thanks so much Francisco. :) Comments like this make it worth it!
@@PassionateDJ Regards!! from dominican republic😎
I bought one just because you can’t beat the price for a quality 4 channel controller. Especially not with full size jogs.
Thanks for the video! I like you kind of humor ;)
Damn came out with the dreamcast game case 👍🏽👍🏽
I can’t help myself… always trying to sneak in the subtle nerd flex 🤣
What kind of "genious" people at Pioneer thought "Yeah these Merge FX sound really good and professional"!?? DafUQ is wrong with them, the FLX-6 could have been such a banger if just given more like the CDJs or the FLX10s filters... 😪 (i still am angry at Pioneer to not see a parallel usable filterbar like on the Traktor Kontrol)
But your Review helped massively thank you a lot. I think I'm not gonna get the FLX-6 and instead save up more money for either the DDJ-800, or 1000 to stay closer to the CDJ features I need to get better with in the club
Do you think this is targeted towards professionals?
The marketing department. Aimed squarely at the "terrible house party" demographic. Faddy effects are also cheaper than providing in/outs on what would otherwise be a decent mixer. Depressing really.
Ok guys,um the gear won’t give you skills. I played a gig back in the day with one turntable and an old reel to reel . The gear doesn’t maketh the Dj. Learn to use what you have .
So this is the controller I ordered. I got it because I’m gonna be using cdjs when I play shows, but I wanted a controller that will give me something close to that experience. So I wanted a cheap controller that feels similar, and uses recordbox. Buuuuuut I also need 4 tracks. This is really the only “budget” option that fits those. The gimmicky effects are dumb and I don’t think they sound useful at all, but we’ll see haha
Honestly, I think this is the perfect attitude towards this controller. Enjoy! 😊
I’m thinking about buying that
Isn't the point of the fx knobs just to get home djs interested in using the RMX products? The FMX10 also has it built in. Alot of techno djs use rmx1000😊
Hi, very comprehensive video! Can I ask you what skin you use? (I can't find the one with the MFX Merge strip), thanks!
😀 nice bro :D
Hello, what is your stand for the flx6 in the video ?
Do you recommend it for weddings gig, I am thinking going from ddj400 to this
Fart sound was Funny mate 😂
Yeah, the merge or scratch thing (I’d rather learn baby scratch than use it) is gimmicky but I’m itching for a 4 channel (with xlr). 😅
It's funny. This ís a cheapo controller which I don't understand the pricestamp for, however ... at a local Mediamarkt here in the Netherlands, someone (ignorant teenage employee who doesn't know the first thing about controllers claiming Serato DJ is software nobody uses .. lol) I asked about this controller, said you cannot do things with this one that professional club DJ's do.
I hooked up my MBP in the store and did a 10-minute performance rocking the hall haha. He stopped being ignorant with open mouth, not understanding how I did that. Which is just simple scratching and mixing. Something most firsttime DJ's can do :) Of course I've been DJ'ing for roughly 25 years now, but the point here is that although the FLX6(GT) is a beginner controller, it does have some perks that other controllers and/or mixer+turntable/tabletops don't have. If you don't need those in/outputs that Í do use, then this is the controller to have.
It's just a shame it's designed for use with Rekordbox, despite its Serato support. Using this in Serato is just .. meh..
Yall making mixing real complicated
Much better review than other ones! This actually goes into detail instead of complaining.
I own this controller, got it for 300€ used in good condition. In my opinion this controller should cost 500€. The gimmick features are pretty useless AND you can't map other features to the jog cutter or merge FX knob. So you're stuck with these features which is a huge bummer.
that these can't be used for anything else (for example another filter simultaneously whatever) is actually infuriating to me
my main concern and question is... is it better than the DDJ 400? or worth the upgrade? Ive been using DDJ 400 for the last 4-5 years and want to upgrade to something thats not too costly and has a booth out
Definitely worth it. You get serato dj pro for free. That's free 200$. Record box, tractor and virtual dj. 4 channels for ultimate practice. After you master flx 4. You can invest in something worth wild. Like rane one or rane four.
i would not its a ddj400 with 2 more channels same build quaiity and stuff i would rather spend some extra and get the ddj 800/ and if 4 channel ddj 1000/Flx10
Using a SEGA Dreamcast game for scale haha
21:48 sorry Pioneer *MERGE*
I have DDJ FLX6..I hope to become a pro DJ...in nightclubs.
Where is the overview with other programs? Why only show Serato, this is already an ancient software. Do you generally understand new technologies or do you shoot for housewives.
My channel is indeed focused on housewives, and our research shows that 78% of married women DJs prefer Serato. Thanks for watching!
@@PassionateDJ That's why you don't have many subscribers. And you're losing Virtual DJ users
