    The reason why that Transformer failed it's because that 3 amp fuse was too large for it. Every 25va should be fused 1 amp. So if you have a 50 VA Transformer their protection has to be 2 Amp. I know this from the hard way. Residential Transformers that were there are usually 40va which I'm not crazy about. You were smart to put a transformer in there that has a built-in breaker. That's the only way I do it as well. I also carry Transformers that are Spud or foot mounted. I've been doing HVACR for 35 years. I work for a school district now working on equipment and I don't miss residential and especially New York I lived out there on Long Island for 8 years and I hate those tight spaces and old buildings. Just passing along about the fuse and Transformer size. 1 amp for every 25 VA. I like the circuit breakers because you will run into times you're going to have problems instead of going through a bunch of fuses you just reset the breaker until you figure it out what's over amping the 24 volts.

    • @JumpermanTech
      @JumpermanTech  Před 5 lety +3

      The thing that got me here is that the fuse never failed to begin with. Found the fuse wired to the common off the secondary winding so if there was a low voltage short, it would just fry to transformer. I'm actually in the commercial business, I hear what you mean about residential baha I prefer working with machines than people 😂 Good tip, I'll keep that in Mind. 1 amp for every 25va

    • @JumpermanTech
      @JumpermanTech  Před 5 lety

      Only thing that secondary 24 voltage controls is a tiny actuator for the electric water valve. Pipe sensor energizes the transformer. Thing barley takes any power

      @benkuxhouse787 Před 5 lety +1

      @@JumpermanTech and that is true but something might have happened with the wiring that might show up later where has an intermittent short you never know. Hopefully not an intermittent problem cuz those are the worst

      @@benkuxhouse787 I hear you with that short. Guess we will find out if theres another service call 😂

    • @benkuxhouse787
      @benkuxhouse787 Před 5 lety +1

      @@JumpermanTech if you do get a call back because that circuit breaker tripped in the Transformer I would just replace the wiring going from there to the zone valve and then see what happens. That's all you can do in a thing like that is become a parts changer. When you have to do that I always start with the cheapest Parts things like that first that will cost the customer the least. You don't want to start with the most expensive part and it ends up being the cheapest one. On package units that do weird stuff I will change out heating limits first because they're the cheapest and see if that's the problem before I start going on to the more expensive things

    I have a FCU in my condo. It gets serviced twice a year by the condo board's approved tech. My system works fine but the tech has been telling me for a few years that the actuator needs to be replaced because it is sticky and now stuck open. My system is not exhibiting any problems and has worked fine all along. I've tried to determine what would happen if the actuator was defective and stuck open. I think that the system wouldn't cycle on and off and would continuously run. Is this correct? Can a defective actuator cause additional problems or damages to a FCU? I don't mind paying for work that is actually necessary and feel like this is a cash grab. Thanks for any info you can provide.

    • @JumpermanTech
      @JumpermanTech  Před 2 lety

      If the actuator is stuck open then all it means is that you're constantly allowing water to flow through your unit whether it's hot water or chilled water. This is not good. It's not a cash grab, it should be replaced. You will constantly have moisture in the summer with flowing water creating mold. In the winter, you will have constant heat so even when the fan shuts off via the thermostat, your unit will act as a radiator making the space uncomfortable. If you any safety devices, it cannot do its job and will create more issues. There's a lot to it. If it's truly stuck, I'd recommend getting that fixed.
