Jeff Gordon wins USAC Midget race at Indianapolis Raceway Park, one week after the death of Rich Vogler. The Volkswagen powered munchkin cars are also in this race, with Mike Fedorcak giving Gordon all he can handle for most of the race.

He died in a crash while leading. Because of USAC rules of red flags, they revert to the last completed lap, so he was declared the winner. Gordon finished 2nd.
