I remember the 1989 TNT and 1990 SNT quite well. Vogler's death was my first real experience with the dangers of auto racing. With that said, I have to say how thankful I am to grow up in a golden age of auto racing. Saturday Night Thunder quenched my thirst for racing as a kid, usually capped off with an F1 race the following morning, and a Winston Cup race Sunday afternoon. Life was good!

I remember driving Rich back to Clow airport in Bolingbrook Illinios after a USAC sprint race at Sante Fe Speedway. A race he would have won if his right front tire hadn't gone flat. When we got to the airport, he came across a pilot whose battery had gone weak and couldn't start his engine. So Rich hand started this guy's engine by hand spinning his propeller, after back-and-forth commands of fuel off, ignition off, finding the right part of the stroke etc. Fuel on, ignition on, he managed to start the engine on the 3rd attempt. Too bad that pilot never knew an Indy 500 driver had started his plane, it would have made a great story for his pilot friends.
