Top 10 Worst Homelands Cards (One of the Worst Sets Ever)

  • Homelands is the seventh expansion released for Magic the Gathering, and to this day, remains one of the worst sets ever released. Not only are there not many interesting or fun cards in the set, there are few to no good cards in the set. Every creature is understatted, every spell weak and unimpactful. However, we’re only trying to go over the absolute bottom of the barrel from this already bottom of the barrel set.

    A TCG player of YuGiOh and MTG once told me that in their early years, MTG and YGO had the opposite approach to their complicated mechanics: YGO had complicated mechanics to make their cards extremely good, while MTG had complicated mechanics to make their cards extremely bad. It was a funny explanation that stuck out to me and I was reminded of in this video.

    Prophecy has one good thing on it. The art, it shows Ishan. One of the most interesting lore villains in magics history on the small scale. Honestly, I would love to see magic do more with Baron Sengir and Ishan and the rest of Clan Sengir. Edward is great and all, but Baron feels like a true vampire overlord.

    For Leeches, it's been stated that removing poison counters was a mistake as it made it no different than the life point system the game had. Even if Leeches wasn't a reserved list card, it still won't get printed.
    If you ask me, Leeches should've been an instant with 1 mana and split second. Then Poison decks would struggle a bit if dominant.
    And man, it stinks when the worst card in the set costs 1 mana. and you know it's bad when at 16:48, there's a chuckle regarding such effects.
    Regarding the best card that's not reserved in Homelands, by price, it's Merchant Scroll.

      Poison is very unfun in commander, specially with Proliferate, and there is no counterplay other than "win the game fast" if you get at least 1 counter there, since the Poison player can just keep proliferating you to death with your counters and playing a control game.
      I wished there was at least cards that decrease the counter a bit so you can have counterplay

    • @falc0n12
      @falc0n12 Před 9 měsíci +5

      @@NataliaNeeSamainfect usually is blown out of proportion. It can kill 1 player, and they usually run out of steam and then get ganged up on. It doesn’t help most infect cards actually really suck lol. It works well in modern or legacy because it’s a 1v1 format and you only need to take out 1 person. In commander, taking out 3 people is tough

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Před 9 měsíci +3

      @@NataliaNeeSama There is already counterplay without having cards that decrease the amount you have. Original Melira, new Melira (though she isn't as good as it), Solemnity, and Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider, directly interact with how many poison counters opponents can put on you.
      Additionally, you can play various forms of regular interaction to stop things from giving you poison counters. Opponent has a lot of infect and toxic creatures? Play a fog, boardwipe, or a lot of creatures to block with. Opponent has a lot of cards that proliferate or otherwise directly put poison counters on you? Counterspells and stifle effects are your friend (Azorius Guildmage + Training Grounds is great at this; great against planeswalkers as well).
      Poison itself isn't really unfun if you are actually interested in participating in the game, it's Infect that can be unfun by allowing players to easily be killed in one hit. And if poison is really such an issue with your Commander playgroup, consider discussing raising the limit to 20 to keep it in line with the life point increase that the format has. It's really not a huge problem, just like commander damage isn't really a huge problem, and it enables a strategy that has huge issues in the commander format, aggro. Other than infect one-shots, poison is an aggro strategy, and is the only really successful one in Commander because of the increased life points and multiple opponents you have to chew through.

  • @bluedestiny2710
    @bluedestiny2710 Před 9 měsíci +24

    With regards to Joven's tools, another aspect on why it sucks, is that in very casual Magic games, some of my classmates ran some wall creatures. If nothing else, Walls were decently stated for their time (i.e Wall of Swords is a 4 mana 3/5 flier) and were pretty good for players who can't spend too much to grab the A tier cards. In situations like that, the Tools even lose more of their use. It's annoying if your opponent has something like Wall of Ice (it's just a 0/7 wall) sitting around and you cant send in your attacker that would most likely have less power than 7
    Now, I'm surprised with several cards NOT making this list like Marjhan and Veldrane of Sengir... but I guess narrowing the horrid cards from that set to 10 is already a difficult task.

    • @masync183

    I think you misread Prophecy as it ALWAYS draws a card next turn as its a separate effect. Still horrible but 1 mana Cantrips(Cards that replace themselves) as a whole have seen play and even been banned before. So while its one of the worst cantrips in the game, its far from #1 as unlike a lot of the cards below it it always does something good even if insanely slowly.
    Its a draft/standard card effectively. As in those low power formats where good cantrips rarely exist. Having a bad Cantrip is still amazing for deck consistency especially in White(Worst generic card draw color in the game).

  • @jaceg810
    @jaceg810 Před 9 měsíci +26

    I do honestly think prophecy is not the worst card. Its very, very, very bad, however I rather flush my deck with 4 prophecy's than a single dwarven sea clan, since prophecy cantrips and thus replaces itself, for the low cost of one mana. Its not great when a cards main upside is how easy it is to replace, however it is not that bad. (also it could be used as a cantrip in a Roil shaper commander deck thats all about spell spamm and it would not be out of place.

      Yes, its benefit is great, since its power/thoughness matters more, however in early magic playing more than 2 colors was exeedingly rare because of janky mana bases, so the chance your opponent has an island is less than a 50/50, and while a 3 mana 1/1 was better than it is now, it is still laughably bad. If its benefit comes up, sure, its playable, however still not great as even the worst ping effects can take it out.

      Yeah I have no idea why prophecy was number 1. At worst it's like a mishra's bauble that costs a single white mana though shuffling afterwards means no info on what they are drawing next turn, but it does give info on stuff they may have boarded in or are playing maindeck. Winter sky is undeniably worse because a lost flip is just a -1 in card advantage and winning the flip still isn't that good unless there are a metric ton of X/1's. Honestly it's better than all the other cards on this list besides maybe that 4 mana artifact creature that loses a +1/+0 counter at end of combat if it attacked or blocked. 4 mana 4/3 was still above rate at the time although it only looks bad compared to juggernaut, a card so efficient it got banned in the early days of the game.

    Leeches is marginally better in Commander, as the whole "buff Blighted Agent to 10/10 and swing for lethal" strategy doesn't work as well when you have to do it 3 times and only have a single copy of Blighted Agent among 99 cards. Commander infect decks usually rely on putting some poison counters on every player as quickly as possibly and then playing proliferate effects to multiply the counters, which would give an opportunity to play Leeches to get rid of the counters before being proliferated to death.
    However, it's still a card that's only useful against one very specific deck archetype that would be a dead draw if nobody plays infect so it's still a bad card, and it's not like it even really hard-counters infect. For one it's a sorcery, so if you've kept it in your hand in order to play when you have multiple poison counters (because it's pretty useless to play it when you only have 1 or 2 counters since the opponent can very easily just reapply those counters again) you might still end up dead because your opponent played multiple proliferate effects in a single turn and you went to 10 counters before your turn began.

    As someone who runs a draft cube of homelands, there is a lot of context missing and I would argue a handful of these cards. Homelands may be a weak set, but its pretty fun to play with. Comparing it to cards that see print 20 years later misses how the game was.

    Homelands had an insanely cool backstory and lore, sadly the cards in the set are some of the weakest we've ever seen.
    Especially after two bangers like Ice Age and Alliance with some of the best cards the game has to offer and influenced the game for a really long time.
    The story was intresting and I'm still mad we didn't get a resolution to what happend to Baron Sengirs army walking through the Dwarven Portal. 😞
    All we know is that Grandmother Sengir, one of the maybe now oldest living Planeswalkers, is still about and kicking!

    There weren't a lot of good cantrips before Mirage and before the Internet everything is different. If the best your opponent is likely to have in 1994 is Nicol Bolas + Animate Dead because it used to be actually hard to collect rares, then Homelands looks vastly different:
    Renewal to sacrifice your Castle Sengir to get the one City of Brass you were lucky enough to have suddenly looks like a real play, and Prophecy could be a common from Mirage and look okay as a very primitive cantrip.

  • @archwing3441
    @archwing3441 Před 9 měsíci +1

    Considering the name, maybe prophecy wasn't suppose to make the opponent shuffle originally? It's weird that you're looking into a prophecy and then shuffling the card you saw into the deck where the odds of ever seeing the card again seems insanely small. If the card didn't shuffle, it would be a lot better as at least you have hand knowledge, which is something at least.

      For those who might be confused how a set-hosing card (Apocalypse's Chime) actually became good was mostly due to 2 cards: Ishan's Shade and Autumn Willow.
      For its time, both cards are really good wincons. Autumn Willow is a 4/4 with Shroud that can be changed into Hexproof (somewhat, since you can choose who can target her) for G mana. So unless you have a board wipe spell, youre gonna have trouble removing this card off the field. Meanwhile, Ishan's Shade is a 5/5 with protection from white. He is pretty much immune to spot removal during his time due to its color (most black spot removal doesnt effect black cards) and the protection effect makes it a threat against white players.
      Therefore, a generic, splashable card that can take down 2 of the more popular wincons at the time gets the attention of players who have no access to boardwipes

      @poiri Před 9 měsíci +5

      It’s still pretty horrible, you’d rather not spend your mana activating it compared to casting more defenders. And you will only realistically use it by tapping arcades or a summoning sick defender, so even using it is quite slow. It’s also where my mind went as I have an arcades deck, but it still sucks there.

    The problem that I have with this video is that you are reviewing the set from the standpoint of a competitive player, who would never play any Homelands card except for Merchant Scroll (and maybe Didgeridoo as a long shot). It makes ranking "the worst" an exercise in futility. If 112 of the 114 cards are unplayable (the 115th card, Timmerian Fiends, is banned for being an ante card, so doesn't count), what does it matter which is comparatively worse? On the other hand, from the view of a Commander/EDH player, I can see some of this list being playable in the right deck, with others being an interesting design challenge. The list would definitely be different if examined through the scope of a casual player.
    Incidentally, Aysen Highway is similar to a card from the Dark called Hidden Path. The difference is, it's a lot easier for a green player to give an opponent forests than it is for a white player to give out plains.

    I disagree about prophecy being the worst card. It’s still a 1-mana draw a card, which is miles better than 10 make something unblockable. While there is no point to ever play prophecy, if you do it for some reason it still replaces itself, whereas tools gets stuck in your hand, and is like skipping your draw step.
