Shiv Lingam

  • Why is Shivling called the Vigraha and why are females not supposed to worship and touch Shivling?
To begin with, God never excluded himself from a certain group, race or creed. Women, like men, are just worshipping. That distinction is there because of the fact that it was men who wrote the scriptures. Women were not allowed to be a part of the decision making of what is a good or a bad ritual. There is nothing stopping you at all from worshipping whomever you want. If we were to say do not worship Shivling but worship Krishna, are we not differentiating between Krishna and Shiva? Are we not then dividing God?
Why is Shiv Lingam called a Vigraha? Anything in which you worship divinity is a Vigraha. If you are offering abhishekam to Lord Vishnu's idol, similarly you are offering abhishekam to Shiv Lingam. First of all it is a symbol of Lord Shiva. In the yogic texts, ling is a name of the body that is referred to as your subtle body so this is symbolic of Lord Shiva. That said we did go through a time where sex was not a taboo and it was okay to talk about it and that is why so many old temples have sculptures of poses of kamasutra on the walls. But all humans are conceived the same way. So Shiv lingam is on a yoni. It is the ultimate union and a reminder that if you could see divinity in the act of intimacy then nothing will remain superficial. Nothing remains undivine. It is a lack of understanding of this subject that can lead to avoidance or repulsion. When you truly understand, you suddenly see the truth.

Wow, such a profound message! It's our internal state of mind that is reflected outside. And I also loved the parts where you mentioned that - 1. Lack of understanding leads to either avoidance or repulsion.
    2. Condemning others comes from insecurity within ourselves.

Pranam Swamiji , very well illustrated . Hinduism is a misnomer and a name given by outsiders to Sanatan Dharma , dharma does not mean religion , its a code of conduct based upon universal truth . Well said that Hinduism has always accepted others opinions and never felt threatened by others opinion . The scriptures of other religion , where they degrade other religions are just commentaries and product of human mind and thats why they are prejudiced . But Vedas are not creation of human mind , they are heard by Rishis in their samadhi , a echo of universal consciousness .

Here I may say that Hinduism is the oldest /first religion ; the first edition you may call it , there was no other religion in existance while the hindu scriptures were being written so it is obvious no condemnation to the religions which came into existence after Hinduism.

@Pranshu impurity is in the observer's mind, really :)
      As swamiji said,,
"Just because YOU are a pervert doesn't mean shivlingam is bad."
How do all beings on earth come into existence?
      How were you born?
If there was no act of intercourse,, humans, me and you, including all other species,, would have long ago become extinct.
There would have remained no life on earth!!
So if Life and existence is not impure,, that act of intimate love isn't impure too.
Those who call it "impure" are really the ones who are boiling within,, with repressed sexual urge.
If it is done in a loving, compassionate, and honest way,, where is the fuss?
But problem begins in the minds of perverts,,
They'll vent out their violence,, they'll RAPE,, they'll molest,, they'll take advantage of the woman's body in crowded areas,, by brushing past them,, and that IS the real ugly thing. But sex need not be that way.
It should remain a basic bodily thing,, and not enter into the mind-space.
      :)

The truth! But in this world where so much trouble is happening because of the differences in practices of all the different religions, swami should not have mentioned that Hinduism is supreme and better. I understand that he was mentioning the the great glory of this religion. But people might take it as if this religion is better than others which is not the right way to look at it. All religions takes is to the supreme. All religions shows us the brahman. In-fact, if you are on the spiritual path, after a certain point, you don't even need a religion to live by because you go beyond that. I am ignorant, these are my thoughts, hence I can be terribly wrong. Thank you for the immense wealth of knowledge.

+Binu Pradeep Yes, all religions have the POTENTIAL to reveal the source to the seeker, unfortunately Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and others have been corrupted into systems of control, and that control has been abused by the psychopaths who to tend to rise to the top of any organization, religious or secular.
Hinduism is fascinating, and the Gods and images are so beautiful. I am woefully ignorant of Indian religions. Can someone explain the difference between Buddhism and Hinduism, and are these two sects frequently getting into conflicts and war the way the "big three" have throughout history?

    • @MrDillbud
      @MrDillbud Před 7 lety +3

Binu Pradeep , "Swami" should not "have mentioned".
(should and should not also does not exist in Sanaatana Dharma.)
Do you realize you are quoting the Swami out of context ,and secondly , you are judging him for something he did not imply . Do you, I mean we all , realize ,why our outer drishti bindu distorts our Inner "Shuddha" perspective ?
It is because of the colonial mindset we have cultivated due to our west imposed education which is stripped of it's Spiritual Values.Khokhla information alone does not give us Knowledge (GYAN).
Padhke bhi hum unpadh reh jaate hain .
British and all colonials have done that harm to us.This is why , at the end of your comment , you apologize."I am ignorant-- I can be terribly wrong".Observe your wishy - washy attitude.
Why not the Swami speak his mind out openly when he is explaining ,
THE TRUTH ABOUT SHIVA LINGA ?
First of all ,Dharma System is not just a religion , which is only a 'dot' in Dharma System's UNIVERSALITY .
So , to equate it with other religions is itself a no no.
Other religions are dogmas that depend on what is written in a book and arrive at an illogical conclusion that "my way is the only way"
Secondly ,the topic he is explaining here is not of superiority or otherwise of any religion.
By the way , other religions don't believe in "SUPREME" & "BRAHMAN". NO.
We have been mistakenly lead to believe by proselelytizing processes that the concepts are the same.
Brahman lives in every breath we inhale and exhale. He/She/It is in every grain of sand, every leaf, petal plant and animal(including Man). Brahman is here, there and everywhere.
Every Jeevaatman ,( including the animal)IS BORN INNOCENT AND PURE.
Other religions believe in a God who exists in Heaven ALONE and arbitrarily controls people. Christ and Allah discriminate.Everyone is a born sinner.Only by accepting christian/islamic dogma, one can remove the daag of being a sinner. ( How can one conclude from these preachings, that all religions are the same???)Further , look at the contradictions. On friday/sunday, you go to the church/masjid and confess your weekly sins and continue to sin after the confession until the next weekend. So long as you remain like a sheep within the christian fold and keep donating, you are saved.
Thirdly, Dharma does not say "all religions are one" .
IT Says ," ALL ARE PATHS TO THE ULTIMATE TRUTH ". That means,on the path all dogmas and doctrines, ideas and ideologies will falter and fall ,struggle and strive with EXPERIMENTS OF TRUTH.
TRUTH is not a commodity that can be offered on a platter like a cooked dish called The Bible or Quran to be consumed "As Is"(bakra or wine dipped wafer )
Even Manu Smriti has to evolve in different yugas and centuries as Time evolves and changes and the
NEEDS OF THE WHOLE STRATA OF SOCIETY CHANGE .
Manu has nowhere said that what he says is the gospel truth for All times. It is a Reference point for us to glean and use what applies to us Now in current times.
You yourself say ,that "if you are on the spiritual path---you don't even need a religion to live by".
Tell me,which religion gives you that freedom ? Try living spiritually like that in islam, kristu and judaism.Practice it for 6 months like Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa did and see the results for yourself.
I just felt a clarification is required here. I won't apologize for my Hindu Dharma. Of Course ! IT IS THE PATH FOR ME . BRAHMAN CARRIES me through my faltering steps WHILE I AM ON THE PATH OF SELF REALIZATION. I am allowed to make mistakes and learn . For having a different thought , I am not declared a kafir/apostate/and fatwa issued for my head to be chopped off by my allah/god's chosen one , a mullah/padri.
      HARI OM TAT SAT .

And these things are independent of what religion you belong and to understand Dharma and love, it could be simple or difficult at the same time
But if you think deeply then you will realize truth itself lies in these two.
There is no Dharma or love if you do it without truthfulness

Hinduism is so hard to practice - you have to be a vegetarian and believe in millions of Gods.

Actually only 33 type of gods ... not 330 millions ..it's often misinterpreted
12 Adityas or Solar gods including Indra, Surya, Mitra and Varun
11 Rudras, the Manifestations of Lord Shiva
8 Vasus or Elemental gods such as Vayu, Agni, Antariksh and Dyaus, the Sky God
      Prajapati Brahma
      Shri Hari Vishnu

Shine on So you are saying all around india I will not find more than 33 Hindu gods that people pray to?

George Washington our religion is deep down scientific... Actually there's only one god but he have subdivided himself for the different purpose mainly production/ protection/destruction so ...God one god is doing this in different forms ... For sure there will be more than 33 gods = )) but all are sub form of the 33 forms = ))) its very complicated ............ u must study a little bit I'm sure you will find it fascinating = )))

You pick and choose what you desire when it comes to gods. If offered a feast do you eat everything off the table till empty?

He is wrong here "you condemn when you are not secure" where as the truth is "we condemn when we hear false stories"........we condemn the godliness of gods who fight among themselves(shiva and vishnu) ,we condemn the manusmrirti which says 19. “Asheela kamvrto………” - 5/157. Men may be lacking virtue, be sexual perverts, immoral and devoid of any good qualities, and yet women must constantly worship and serve their husbands.

the Mahabharatha also says, that not one man must abuse/pain his wife.
The stories of puranas were meant to glorify its main.central god and in the prcess they abused other gods.
but what their main deity does it perfect. in dharma.
and puranas are given the same status, as that of hadiths, we do not consider all of them to be exact and authentic-because many of them pisses the same stereotypes they have about other sects, lke shiva/vishnu.
      these parts are additions.

Let me remind you... The Highest Goddess - the Parashakti - is a female deity...
And She is treated as the Universal Mother...
All Gods including Shiva and Visnu worship Her... according to our shashtras...
      And you never know...
What underlying message they wanna deliver us ... with the fights... and the Manu scriptures...
Just think about it... With deep Reflection... instead of immediately reacting...
It's more than what meets the eye..
      🙏🙏
